I'm a casual fan of NHL regular season, who becomes interested when the playoffs start, but my true love is Olympic Hockey with the larger ice surface.

When does team USA pick its roster and what are the chances to medal?

Our NHL players aren't playing

Team USA’s final 25-player roster will be comprised of college players, American Hockey Leaguers, and Americans playing professionally in Europe.

Before the Games, the U.S. will compete at the Deutschland Cup in Augsburg, Germany, from November 10-12, as part of the player evaluation and selection process, with the Olympic coaching and management staff guiding the U.S. efforts in that event.

Welcome back to the 1980s

N.H.L.’s loss would be a boon for the Russia-based Kontinental Hockey League, which has 29 teams across eight countries, including China.

Unless they're banned too

Russian parliament prepares a bill for the KHL so the league could forbid its players to participate in the Olympics including import players

Russia’s Olympic status remains cloudy. On December 5, the International Olympic Committee will meet to determine what sanctions, if any, will be enacted as a result of the nation’s ongoing non-compliance with World Anti-Doping Agency standards.

Wow that sucks.

It would suck if Sid got hurt even more

Plenty of reasons for NHL to pass on Olympics

The positives don't outweigh the negatives; that's what it comes down to.

The NHL understands the arguments for participating in the Olympics: promoting the League, growing the sport, giving fans and players a great experience. It understands why its players want to go to PyeongChang in 2018. They are the same reasons the League went to the Olympics the first time, in Nagano in 1998.

All NHL players experience increased risk for injury during an Olympic year because of the compressed schedule that accompanies participation. That risk obviously grows for the players who take part in the tournament.

Four NHL players sustained season-ending injuries in Sochi: New York Islanders captain John Tavares, Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg, and Florida Panthers forwards Aleksander Barkov and Tomas Kopecky. (Zetterberg returned for two games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs as the Red Wings lost to the Boston Bruins in five games in the Eastern Conference First Round.)

At least three others missed NHL games because of injuries sustained in Sochi: Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Paul Martin (18), Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Fedor Tyutin (eight) and New York Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello (four).

US team looked like **** in the World Cup of Hockey this year. I don't know if they would have put it together for the playoffs. The nordic countries will take the cup if the KHL is held out of the olympics. Look for Sweden and Norway to rip through the competition. Otherwise, the Russians would be favorites if the KHL is eligible.

The NHL should shut down for 2 weeks and extend their season to fit in the missed games. They are missing the best chance to show their stars. I'll watch with low expectations for the USA Olympic hockey team.

Soccer fans have no team USA at all in the world cup.

Wow

Russia Banned from Winter Olympics by I.O.C.

Russia has been barred from the 2018 Winter Games for systematic doping.

It’s a punishment without precedent in Olympic history.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Russia’s Olympic team has been barred from the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The country’s government officials are forbidden to attend, its flag will not be displayed at the opening ceremony and its anthem will not sound.

Any athletes from Russia who receive special dispensation to compete will do so as individuals wearing a neutral uniform, and the official record books will forever show that Russia won zero medals.

Wow that sucks.

Yeah no NHLers playing.
I'm unfamiliar with Boston College, Ohio St, Michigan etc.

I'm not sure if the QMJHL, WHL, etc are playing.

On another note the womens USA hockey team looks amazing.
Hilary Knight is pretty fast. Amanda Kessel(Phil's sister) is also a talent.

Just like you I'll be tuning in not knowing the players

Shoot! Charlie Macavoy? He was on team USA last season.
He's kicking *** with the Bruins this season.

A lot of guys have moved on from the college/team USA shindig.
I've been following really only the Pens/Baby Pens/Nailers this season.

I'm not sure if USA will just fill the team with college athletes or if they open up the minors to play. A lot of good players in the AHL, IHL, OHL. Canada would have a competitive team fielding from those leagues as well.

I am looking forward to seeing emerging talent in the Olympics. Let the NHLers take a 2 week break, and come back rested for the playoff run.

No one in Canada will give a **** about Olympic hockey without the worlds best. Regressive step for the Olympics; nice job Bettman.
We will focus on curling!

This is a link to the National Select Team roster. 21 Players have NHL experience. (Not good enough to make it). Looks like none of the NHL affiliate leagues are eligible. I guess there will be roster changes since the USA didn't win a game in the Deutschland Cup . I'm disappointed that ECHL and other minor leagues aren't available. Probably hurts Canada more than the USA.. Most NHL prospects play highly competitive Summer leagues, so I really don't buy the injury potential.

I don't think we have a prayer against the Norway's and Sweden's.......... Most thought that way in 1980. Fingers crossed !

Can't love everyone. Not a suck, not someone who acts like a petulant child with an axe. Dude was engaged by another and the ***** tried to break his ankle! Should have been suspended 20 games minimum.

I like the other Kessel! She's tough.

The undeniable fact is that a team has no chance competing against the best in the world unless they are a genuine team. Brooks knew this and drilled and drilled and drilled his kids until they were a team. They knew where every teammate would be, who would defend the break and where, where to put the puck off the boards, when to break, where to break, etc.

Putting together some good players and having them play for 2 months will not work. Have them play together for 6-9 months, and watch what happens.

By the way, the 1980 team worked and practiced and played together for 11 months.

And Canada did not send its best like the Russians.

We hosted the best hockey players several times:
