You gotta go Fields next week

1
In theory a veteran who has been there done that could provide the team with a spark and sometimes leads a team to good things.

Then there is this managed team that won’t highlight a players strengths and minimize weaknesses. They actually manage to do the opposite.

You bring Darnold in he would be the pre Vikings QB. You bring in Queen and he makes half the plays.

Sure a free agent might initially do well, then they settle into the slide of suck that eventually captures this team on a year to year bases.

If a player leaves and goes to a suck team eh. But let them go to a good team that gets micromanaged better than ours. (the majority) You get a Dotson or something equivalent.

Minus the players that the Steelers took on that were a college problem or developed into a problem per the team’s culture. Even some of them manage to shake the Steeler stank off of them like a JuJu.

As long as this system of fail is allowed to dawn a pair of sunglasses on the sideline the eye covering won’t mask the inability to X and O and in game manage the team to good things when the heat is on.

Take those shades off subsequently you get bug eyes…

andd no surprise.
All that said.....Russ has looked bad these last 4 games. Is it all system? Nope. He has missed open Players with bad passes. Taken bad sacks. Got happy feet at times. Especially if late.

People on here told me Russ would make our OL better just because he was under center. That every player on offense would be better just by having this Vet SB champion on the field.

Hopefully he turns it around next week. We need that leadership and skillset I was told that he brought to the table. We need it because we know Tomlin won't be changing what we do on the offensive side of the ball. The only change we can hope for is from the players themselves.

I said give Russ the first third. You had to yank him at half. They did not. I'm not worried about hurting Russ' feelings. Don't want him back anyhow. Go out on your shield. After the last four games no way you are saying wow we should have went Russ if Fields is brutal. But I can almost guarentee they are going to get smoked in Baltimore with Russ. You gotta try to get a spark.
So what you’re saying is Pickens, Friermuth and Austin won’t drop 6 passes or fumble with Fields at QB?

That is just that the good teams that are in game managed well succeed or get close to success. The good teams that aren’t in game managed well fail 9 out of 10 times. You might rahrah them in the beginning if you can’t make adjustments more often than not you will be sitting at home watching the playoffs unfold.

It would take a rat meltdown for them to lose in this next upcoming matchup. Yes I am saying the Chargers will win their matchup.

I have been on the hope fence and end up falling on my arse everytime.

My advice bring a pillow.

No I'm not saying that. What I am saying is this thing ends next weekend anyhow. So why the **** would I want to watch them going out the exact same way as the last 4?

The play calling has not let Russ get into rhythm. Run, run, pass for nearly 3 quarters, Pickens dropping passes thrown right to him doesn’t help (makes me wonder if those were F you drops to Russ). Trey Hendrickson went around 65 like he was a traffic cone all night. Earlier in the season, the play calling has been favorable to allow Russ to get into rhythm. I credited Smith for opening up the offense. Now it seems that it went into ultra conservative mode especially yesterday. I don’t know if Fields would’ve fared any better

I watched Wilson ignore wide open guys in the middle of the field and wait for the back to dump it off. The straw that breaks the back? Missing Pickens with the game on the line, after getting the look you absolutely want...would have been a walk in touchdown, and he misses him BADLY!
Maybe but Pickens dropped several balls that would have made a huge difference in the game. The OL sucks so you absolutely cannot blame all of that on Russ. Sure, he has his issues but Moore is still a turnstile. I think he gave up 3 or 4 sacks to Hendrickson. The OL got so much worse as the season went on. Can't wait for Moore to be gone.

This is basically it. The QBs were not going to wow us this year from start to finish, but either Fields or Wilson could've been set up for more success over an extended period of time. Yes, Tomlin knows how to muddy games and get wins by squeaking it out in the 4th quarter, but he no longer knows how to coach a highly competitive football team capable of winning a championship. The Chiefs, Ravens, Lions, Vikings, Packers, 49ers, etc. have all lapped the Steelers in understanding how to build and develop an offense.

However, we can pull the same threads about the offense from years ago and they still apply. We can pull threads out from a decade ago about underachieving in the playoffs and they still apply. There have been multiple QBs, OL coaches, OCs, player personnel and the results are the same with the one constant being the head coach.

It reaches a point when a team is stuck in neutral, unable to make any meaningful progress, for so long that a new approach and perspective to the operations of the team becomes necessary.

One shouldn't have to wait until things hit rock bottom with a run of "five or less win" seasons to realize this, though that seems to be what Rooney is waiting for.

It's why I wasn't overly thrilled with the Steelers choosing to promote from within the organization to replace Kevin Colbert as GM.

It's not like the Steelers front office had been hitting home runs from a personnel standpoint for much of Colbert's last decade, and Khan was a big part of it, as well as Tomlin.

Like some said most QBs are rhythm guys. You can not get into a rhythm running on every first and second down. Every QB misses throws, but the difference is they get multiple chances to try again. If Russ misses a throw the next play is a punt. The QBs / WRs have such limited opportunities that if they do not play perfect its game over. It all comes down to poor philosophy, game planning, and play calling.

I've seen Russ suck enough to suit me. I'd rather watch Fields suck just for the change of scenery.
Well that's just it. They have two qs on field roster. Clearly and I mean crystal clearly Russ is a very expensive place holder. Let's see what Fields can do in a big pressure game. Rather go out on the shield then a whimpering group of lovers.

Wilson isn't expensive, he has the lowest salary in the roster. Denver is paying him to play

And it isn't smart to blame him for the L.. he's playing on a bad team, soso O line, #1 WR is a head case, running back room is middling, and so on

Can't ownership see far enough to recognize what Baltimore and Cincinnati have been doing. Did Rooney not watch Baltimore players loose and having a party on the field yesterday

Let’s be real here for a minute. If either of these two QBs were legit franchise QBs they wouldn’t be here.
Russ is old, slow, and as I stated in the summer, takes far too many sacks. Now it’s turnovers added to his repertoire. No thanks!
Justin has some hope and in all fairness the guy has been through now four systems since he was drafted.Don't think he’s a franchise QB but with proper coaching, an efficient scheme and playcalling, he could be good.
That’s where we are!

I think I know wtf they are paying Russell Wilson man. I'm saying there was a point in this season I'd have been ready for them to pay full market with escape outs. Now what the **** do you do? Pay him 30 million. Come on.

And if you’re running on 1st and 2nd down, you better be successful. If you’re constantly facing 3rd and 4 or more, passing on 3rd down is that much more predictable.

Smith and Tomlin went away from the game plan from the first Bengals game. It’s like they saw the team dropping passes in warm up and decided they better try to run the ball as much as possible.

The question I have is what did Pickens exactly have to be frustrated about personally?

Prior to his injury, both he and the offense were producing, yet as soon as he comes back, he acts like he could not give less of a ****.

The kid is just proving to be an Antonio Brown/Terrell Owens level head case who hasn't even gotten his first big contract yet.

It's looking increasingly unlikely he is going to get it from the Steelers, and it is definitely "buyer beware" toward whoever ends up paying him, even if it is a team like the Chiefs or Bills.

A lot of money is not likely to improve his character.
There’s obviously something internal going on aside from the external issues.

**** every media member tries to bait him every chance they get going clear back to last season. You don’t think that has gotten under his skin? And several moron fans pile on and lap up the narrative too. He has obviously checked out and is ready for a change of scene, and I don’t blame him a bit for that. He is not used properly and is stuck in an archaic offensive scheme with **** QB play as the norm and then has to deal with ******* reporters and fans. Why would he want to give everything has he for that crowd of ungrateful *****?

We have 1 legit receiver but I saw at least 10-15 passing plays last night where OldeRuss didn’t even look at Pickens. That’s an absolute garbage way to advance through your progression whether it is a Russ thing or a coaching scheme.

By the end of the game Russ simply followed Muth with his eyes nearly every play. Russ is cooked
And way overrated.

Can’t wait for GP to be clear of the clown car and put his skills back on display while the Steelers just continue to Steeler.

I totally agree the Russell Wilson experiment is over. He’s not the threat that he used to be and because of that we’re too predictable. Our run game there is none play action not gonna happen.

Justin Fields is the future give that kid a chance to learn that offense and read defenses. Let’s not lose this kid because we wanna give this old guy a shot which we should’ve done three or four years ago he’s 36 years old.

Fields is the future he’s proven that.

You cannot win with a guy that acts like that. They all have reasons to *****. But the ones worth keeping ball out.

No identical situations, but...

Jared Goff
-Goff's final two years in the Rams he had a terrible TD:INT ratio. In just his second year in Detroit he is one of the NFL's best passers.

Baker Mayfield
-Considered a failed top pick, he went from Cleveland, to Carolina, to LA before settling in with the Bucs. Immediately he became a top-10 QB and is one of the most productive this year in terms of TDs.

Sam Darnold
-He was seeing ghosts a few years ago. After stints with the Jets, Panthers, and 49ers, he was a borderline MVP candidate this season

Geno Smith
-Stunk with a loser franchise (Jets) and spent time with the Giants and Chargers before settling into a solid QB in Seattle. He fell of this year, but it's also a team in transition and he's 34.

Brock Purdy
-Pick #262 locked into a system that found him having success as a rookie and 31 TDs last year. Injuries to himself and teammates impacted this season, but Shanahan got the best out of a late-round prospect.

None of those guys were legit QBs yet here they are having a lot of success, or at least multiple seasons of success that gave each team confidence moving forward. Tomlin would need Allen or Mahomes to walk through that door to contend. If we hired Andy Reid tomorrow, he could probably have 10-15 QBs under center and win at least one playoff game.

I think the media, fans, coaching and QBs wrecked any chance of him excelling as a Steeler.

A talent like him will end up excelling, elsewhere. He definitely needs a fresh start and to get away from where he is shown little appreciation.

Every now and then an employee and a workplace just don’t mesh, we’re watching it unfold in real time.

He requires several things the Steelers and the Steeler fan base can’t/wont offer.

You do know he can't read a defense for **** right? He would need some really talented receivers, who actually keep working when a qb scrambles.

The Steelers can't run the ball for ****. Hell, they can't get a yard or even a half yard when they need it. **** they're soft and their blocking schemes are absolute failures.

Dan Moore I'd cut tomorrow.
It is starting to seem as though Russ can't read them either. He isn't going thru his progressions fast enough. Missing open players. Getting happy feet when there isn't a need to. This from the Vet. A SB winning Vet.

Tired of the fact that apparently Russ isn't a loud to audible out of runs either. Fields stated he could change what side the run can go to. Yesterday Cincy loaded the box up numerous times on first down. It seemed as if Russ audibled....they still ran the ball. Maybe he also is only able to switch which side play goes to. Crazy....high school teams audible out of runs to passes.

It's a no win situation with either qb. It's too simplistic and easy to shut down for a defense. Fields will get you some extra yards with his feet and that's about it.

It's one read,then run.

This current offense needs the ball gone between 2-3 seconds. When that happens, they move. I swear they script nothing and if they actually do it's awful.

Yesterday the game plan was to run and then run some more. The trouble is they can't run, unless 1-2 yards counts.

Every defense plays up close to the line and stacks the box. They've been doing it for about 5 years now.

That OL can't pass blocking or run blocking. The opposing defenses don't even need to blitz and if they do it's going to get through.

The defense isn't much better. I was starting to think Burrow might set a completion record for a while.

This team has all sorts of issues on both sides of the ball, and some of them are the EXACT same issues as 10 year ago.

Pickens imo looks to be at a point of wanting out of Pittsburgh.
His body language, actions all seem like he’s just not happy there.
Wouldn’t be all surprised to see him on the trading block.
He’s another one with million dollar talent and ten cent brain. You can’t fix him so probably best to move on.
