Steelers select Dri Archer in Round 3

Is this turning into a mike Sam thread?

This was from Dick in steelers.com

"The one or two corners that we picked up last year and this year; (one) would be Antwon Blake, from Jacksonville. I had him graded fairly high going into last year's draft. Blake is very fast. He didn't get invited to the Combine; some clocks had him sub-4.3 (in the 40-yard dash). He's very strong on top of that, he's quick.

"He was so tough the Jaguars tried to use him at safety even though he's under 6-foot (5-9, 198). He turned out to be a really good special teams player for us. I'm thinking he could turn out to be a really good corner for us.

That could be the reason no CB in the first 4 rounds. But everyone here is smarter than him and we should of taken a CB at 3!

Yeah, I was kind of expecting him to say something like; "We did not get the corner we wanted in the first four rounds and had to take some stiff from UCLA in the 5th. We really do not have **** behind the top three and if one of them goes down, we are probably going to look like a monkey ******* a football in the secondary, but we did dust off a couple rehab projects in free agency and we hope like hell we hit the lottery with one of them."

Because they are always so honest with their answers. Have you EVER heard them state they suck somewhere? I wonder if he felt they sucked at any point over the past two seasons, when they logged 8-8 records. Nah, the players were greek gods then too..........

You really do not have to stick your whole head in there when you smooch the rear.

Chris gamble went from Wr to CB in one year.
why not DHB? He's only 26
It's somewhere on behindthesteel fan post.

Tom pretty sure you thought James Harrison was a bum at some point!
Pull up your pre draft scouting report on him. Love to see that.

Again if the FO wanted a CB in the first or second or third
they would of drafted one but.. Against all you great graders
they passed on all of them Every single dam ******* one.
(Throw Gilbert down my throat)

Didn't you think signing Gay was a mistake this time last year?

Your right nobody beyond our top three CB's can
Improve enough to ever start since all our coaches suck.
And our GM wears an *** hat.
they have been in the league for 3 years.
They would of started by now if they didn't suck.
(Ask James Harrison he knows)

By the way archer isn't small he's just short.

Btw I loved the picture and enjoy your post like
Most of steeler nation.

I just keep thinking how Dick told us he didn't draft
a CB because they think they have
enough talent there all ready and getting
More pressure upfront had more of a need and that
In turn would help the backfield more than any rookie
CB would. Maybe they think rookie linemen and lb's
Can help more sooner. They could also like next years
Cb's more (via free agents/draft).

Eh, I don't know TMC, I don't think Dick Lebeau is really a blowing smoke kind of guy. I'd think he'd just not comment rather than out and out bullshit about a player, but that's just me.

Joe

Yeah, and you were right there deep throating the Rainey pick as well. Gagging. I bet you even brought up articles on how Mike Adams was the best left tackle in the draft. Probably even talked about how the OL coach at that time said he was a LT. Tell me how Ziggy Hood is a prime 3-4 DE. Better yet, tell me about Sean Mahan and his big contract working out at center.

Tell me about Mendenhall. Sweed. Shall I go on? How many of those guys were all-world right after the draft? How many did the coaches talk up?

And, Archer is small. Not only is he short, he weighs 173 pounds which would put him in the bottom 5% of all NFL players. In fact, he would not even be the biggest player in the Lingerie Football League. Not even close. And, they run around in bras and panties with their *** hanging out for ratings. Yet, YOU think he is just short. Does Tomlin even pat your head when you are doing that for him?

no. Vader is going to lead by example in showing us that if there is an on-going thread on any topic that one does not particularly care for that they should not open it. this will be even more interesting when someone credits Timmons for making a tackle.

Well, as long as he just doesn't pop in to ***** about the length of the thread, but rather adds something to the discussion about the topic at hand, I don't in any way see how that negates what he's said here.

Looks like Archer is taking this thread to the DANGER ZONE!!

I have no dog in this fight-

but I feel that it is justified to comment or 'complain' about the length of a thread. If said thread has not presented any new information for 40 so pages...

Honestly, how long can someone argue-

"He will be the next Sproles/McCluster"
"Noooo, he is either going to be Rainey or will get destroyed"

I consider this to be an "open thread". just looking for some entertainment from Tibs or Ark or Supe:cool:

This is the thing when people say the Steelers should have taken a CB in the third instead of Archer. IT WAS GOING TO BE BRYANT!!! The choice was between Archer and Bryant and from what I can gather is either someone pounded their fist and got their guy in Archer (my guess in that scenario it would be Haley) or the Steelers got wind that someone was going to take him not long after the Steelers pick and Archer would not be there in the 4th. But lets say the Steelers took Bryant in the third instead (even though we got him in the 4th anyways) that would mean with our 4th round pick the CB's left on the board would be: Walt Aikens, Pierre Desir, Dontae Johnson, Ricardo Allen, and Bene Benwikere before we took Shaq Richardson. What I see is a lot of height, weight, speed guys and one without but good production. I personally don't see a huge difference between Walt Aikens and Shaq Richardson... infact Shaq has the better workout numbers.

From what I can see in this draft is the Steelers took the BPA in round 1 and 2. They didn't reach on Dennard and they must have Tuitt ahead of Stanley Jean-Baptiste the only CB taken in the 2nd after them. In the third CB wasn't even a top two discussion and in the 4th the guy they wanted in the third was still on the board so I am assuming not much talk went towards CB's then either. It's the way the board fell and I am glad they went BPA and didn't start reaching on guys. And I can tell you if Shazier and Tuitt can help get to the QB this year our CB's will look a lot better than they did last year!

I am not sure how anyone is surpised at the draft. The Steelers signed a LB, DL, CB, two WR's, FS (Clark replacement), and RB. They put themselves in position to not have to force draft a position. I kind of feel like Jarvis Jones might have been a forced draft position. Harrison was gone, Woodley was always hurt, and at that point Worilds had not done squat. JJ was a college 34 defense OLB with a ton of production and maybe he wasn't the highest on the draft board but the glaring need forced their hand. I'm not sure if that was the case but the way they signed depth FA's makes me feel like they wanted to go into the draft having their roster in pretty good shape.

Dri Archer will kick your *****!

Yup, that's exactly what's gonna happen. So I suggest everyone get back on track and begin listing the ways Archer is gonna put this offense on his back & get this team into the playoffs.

Agreed, but these are the same posters over and over. Just copy/pasting their thread length bitchfits over and over.

And if this were the only such thread, it would be a different story. But it's not. Some of these guys have a timer set on their browsers: when a thread reaches X pages, start posting about it every 4-6 hours.

Well I am on record as saying that I want this thread to get to 100 pages- but I doubt we have the firepower.

How about we take some bets? I will set the market-

63 pages over/under?

TMC I like what you posted about Adams not being a LT and agreed with you. I laughed at hood jumping out of pools and only hoped Rainey could contribute. Archer is no Rainey you look foolish to think they are the same player.

I get that, and it's a fair point, but some of us didn't want to take Archer at all, regardless of round. I think of him as a 5th-6th guy. So for me, the difference between the 3rd and the 4th isn't the issue so much as they player himself. If Bryant was necessary, I would have preferred Bryant in the 3rd and a more useful prospect (CB/OLB/WR) in the 4th, and let someone else work their ***** off to make Archer a contributor. *** Let me add the necessary disclaimer that I am not a professional GM, nor do I claim to have any clairvoyant knowledge of the future. But we all have our own ideas. ***

If Archer looked like a better prospect, I'd be fine with it. If he really did project to be Sproles or DeSean Jackson I'd agree with everyone in here who told us what an interesting dimension we've added to the offense, and I'd be plenty excited about it.

From what I can see in this draft is the Steelers took the BPA in round 1 and 2.

I think they did an excellent job there. I was worried they'd reach for need (Dennard) or have their own ideas about some late-first, early-second type of guy and reach for him (Benjamin or Lee). Shazier was the right pick at 15, and while I'm not quite as high on Tuitt as some are, he brought excellent value and real potential to turn a big weakness into a big strength. To me, the BPA v. need debate isn't as simple as it seems. You don't just (a) take the position you look weakest at in May, nor do you (b) take the highest-rated player on your board regardless of position. I think you identify and rank your key needs, then take the highest-rated and best-fitting player available.

I am not sure how anyone is surpised at the draft. The Steelers signed a LB, DL, CB, two WR's, FS (Clark replacement), and RB. They put themselves in position to not have to force draft a position. I'm not sure if that was the case but the way they signed depth FA's makes me feel like they wanted to go into the draft having their roster in pretty good shape.

They did a great job of that. This was not a good safety class at all, and I think they locked up a young contributor in Mitchell. Like all drafts, this one only had X number of pure NTs, and we added Cam Thomas. I just think there are key needs we ignored. Our pass rush still looks horrid, and our CB depth chart is worrisome to me. The main beef I have with the Archer pick is that it took away a chance to fill one of those much more important roles.

Exactly. I have no problem with people talking about any player, coach, Goodall NFL thuggery or Michael Sam's glory hole abuses. I've never understood complaining about the length of a thread. Just don't open it and problem solved.

Or don't assume people are complaining about the length of a thread just because they post the number of pages to make a point. Especially when it was abundantly clear that I wasn't complaining, but hey what do I know, I only typed the post out myself.
