Playing a 40 year old QB who is mostly immobile and been with the team for a week.

That sounds very much like a recipe for bringing pressure, forcing quick decisions from a QB who has limited time with the playbook.

Instead, Tomlin puts 2 d-lineman along with TJ and Highsmith into a 4 man front and stays with it most of the night??? They rushed 4 all night, got no pressure. On top of that, they lined up 245 pound OLBs over Cincinnati's OT and got blown off the line against the run. Of course, TJ and Highsmith are giving up 70-75 pounds each. Nobody wins that against the run. Worst, having a guy that much bigger pounding on you all night serves to negate your energy and stamina when trying to pass rush.

It's as if the Steelers lined up a defense that gave Joe Flacco every gentlemanly coureousy they could dream up.

Mike Tomlin is regularly out-coached. That's no news flash. But it's time that we stop saying he is a defensive coach. He doesn't appear to understand the basics of defensive football.

Exactly, if max coverage is not working, bring the blitz, go to some zone blitz, try SOMETHING to disrupt the rhythm. We did nothing to stop ANY of the facets of the Bengals offense.

Tomlin knows best! He’s the smartest guy in the room!
Between Tomlin and Rooney they’ve set this organization back years.
Poor drafts, poor player development, bad coaching hires, terrible defensive schemes, lack of adjustments, arrogance.
This organization is just not worth investing your time any longer. We all know how this is going to end.

Personnel and style are on Tomlin. Game plan, calls and adjustments are on Austin. Execution is on the players.

Last night was about Austin's inability to make adjustments more than anything, IMHO.

Austin is merely a figurehead! Tomlin runs this defense!
Austin does what he’s told period.

I'm trying to find two clips. One clip was from Tomlin before the season started on McFadden's podcast, saying " we can cover anyone in the NFL, no disrespect to the Bengals, but we can cover anyone" LOL he singled out the Bengals, and they did this to his defense, the numbers could've been worse if Higgins finishes that catch and goes in for a TD. You think he'd have learned from the time he totally ignored the Jags and talked about the rematch vs NE in the AFCCG to stop running his mouth.
The second clip they were talking about on the radio earlier, Chase saying we knew exactly what they were going to do.

This is why Flacco kills them often, we play him the exact same damn way every time.

There have just been too many games over the years where the Steelers are beaten by the same pass routes over and over again and they seem totally helpless in adjusting to them.

Regardless, Tomlin currently has a lot of egg on his face from his "historic defense" rhetoric over the summer.

Disagree, this is all Tomlin. After Butler retired he was on the radio on DVE in Pittsburgh and they asked him about calling games on game day, he laughed and said something like, "i'd love to have gotten to call a game" This is exactly why a guy like Brian Flores is allowed to leave the building, because he would want to do his thing, instead of just go along with Tomlin, like Austin, just another yes man.

Rodgers has been the one professional and bright spot. TJ is hamstrung by Tomlin but TJ went as far as to say Tomlin is the only coach he'd want to play for so now he's got to lay in that bed with another 0-fer playoff winning season.

What a shame. TJ is in the pantheon of Steeler modern greats and is the only one within a single playoff win. Because of the team's failed marriage to Tomlin.

The best offensive players since Ben left are a 41 year old QB, an overpaid WR you got on trade, and an UDFA RB
The 1 good weapon they drafted in the past 5 years was traded away.

you missed a ("lack of") at the start of your title

At least the Steelers don't have to worry about giving that bum Porter a big contract, back to the drawing board for a young corner.
I actually believe Pierre would be more effective..and if Trice can stay healthy could be an option also ..

Has TJ Watt or his brother JJ ever won a playoff game?

Tomlin is a coach of words and platitudes, but he’s clueless when it actually comes to in game adjustments or game plans.

They should have traded Watt last year and they never should have paid Heyward either.

This team is so ridiculously predictable it’s sad. I’m emotionally invested, but I’m trying to prepare myself that this team very well might only win 3-4 more games this season.

Oh come on they had to dedicate all their resources to hold chase under 30 catches

20 years and we're still searching for the first really good CB to be drafted and developed under Tomlin.

I'm not yet ready to completely write off Porter, but he's looking destined to be an average at best CB in the league. He is totally incapable of not grabbing WRs, it seems, as that was the main concern on him coming out of college.

I tend to think he got away with a lot of **** during his strong rookie season and opposing teams, having studied game video, started advising the officials to watch him more closely. It's been downhill from there. On top of that, he seems injury prone.

Between Porter, Broderick Jones and Benton, the whole top of that 2023 draft class doesn't look as promising as it did early on.

It doesn't reflect well on Tomlin, but Omar doesn't get a pass either. On top of the suspect drafting and development, the investments in the over-30 CBs has backfired.

In fairness to them, though, waiting on Rodgers into the summer seems to be paying off, despite all the criticism they faced for it, including from me.

I read somewhere that Chase said that the Steelers Defense did what they always do and exactly what the Bengals expected them to do. So how many players from opposing teams have said that or something similar? You think they’d change, but they never do. This Tampa 2 hybrid is all Tomlin knows. It’s all he’s ever going to allow. They had guys running open all night. Everywhere. Flacco had all day to throw. Their running game looked elite. Guess the Steelers defense just wasn’t communicating very well.

This Is a historical defense Coryea, don't diss me like that. I'm working on my 53rd non losing season and they are a key component to securing that mediocrity...show some respect.

A little off topic, but when Tomlin leaves, it will take a few years to get rid of the trash - our huge collection of Swiss Army Knives - and rebuild. I just wish that process were starting today.
We will probably hit the same drought period in years from 1981-2005 for superbowls without even getting close.

We're already at 15 years since the last appearance and 17 years since the last win.

They're haven't been remotely close to elite championship level in a very long time.

That horseshit scheme they ran on defense Thursday night is a testament to the **** ing laziness of the coaching staff to change a damn thing.

I don't know if it's ego, arrogance, laziness or they're just tactical retards. Maybe all the above.

It's the same defense, over and over. Players have said it for years. It's all that Tomlin knows. He is severely limited.

Whatever it is.....it has been going on for years and years. It is what it is until Tomlin leaves. And that could be a decade or more from now.

It's the same defense, over and over. Players have said it for years. It's all that Tomlin knows. He is severely limited.

He's obsessed with the defensive philosophy that Tony Dungy brought him into, particularly when it comes too over-depending on the four-man rush to dominate and becoming really good at just a couple zone coverages with little in the way of wrinkles or variations.

Assuming a team had the players to execute it, there was strength in its simplicity.

It worked great in its day, but it helped having Warren Sapp and Simeon Rice up front with Derrick Brooks, Ronde Barber and John Lynch playing those zone behind them.

The league has evolved beyond it to a large extent, but Tomlin is not able to outgrow his coaching roots apparently.

There are reasons other Dungy disciples like Herm Edwards and Lovie Smith dropped off after great starts as head coaches.

Tomlin did not seem to tinker much with the Cowher/Lebeau system his first several years, but once Lebeau "retired," Tomlin started influencing the scheme more and more and we've seen the results.
