Pickens would not have had this success here

George Pickens went off again last night in a game that both he and Lamb missed the start of because they were being disciplined by the HC for something that occurred during the week. The morning hosts on 93.7 the Fan were pointing this out and piling on Tomlin for treating him like a child, not a man like Schottenheimer did.

While I agree with all of that, I don’t think it would have mattered how Tomlin treated him if he stayed in Pittsburgh. Dallas has a smart, wide open, talented passing game, the Steelers are in year 7 of merely trying to hide the passing game. If they had planned to keep Pickens they never would have signed DK. This is a one-WR town as long as Tomlin is around, and Pickens would have been getting the 6-ish targets a game DK is getting in a contract year.

In just 10 games in a legit offense, Pickens is just 23 targets, 5 catches, and 232 yards off his career highs in Pittsburgh. His 7 TDs is 2 more than he ever had in a season in Pittsburgh.

Not that WRs wanted to play for Tomlin before, but I can’t imagine any even taking calls in the future after this. We might even see WRs in the draft pull an Elway if the Steelers draft them and refuse to play for them.

Wake up, Rooney. You own a clown show.

You start the post by saying he had to be disciplined. Then it's but, but, but...

The guy is an idiot. Not to say he can't change, but will he once someone gives him big money? If someone does? Last I checked Dallas is 4-5-1. Guys like him may put up shiny stats, but they don't help teams win because of the stupid stuff they do. It drains a team. He still acting the idiot getting all these targets!

The Steeler offense sucking is a different issue.

Which makes the DK contract that much dumber, we have the #4 highest paid WR in the NFL.
DK is currently 50th in reception and 30th in yards.
Pickens has all the talent in the world, but in this offense he'd have lost his sh!t already.

Pickens should not be a discussion. He had to go. He is getting all these targets in Dallas and still being an idiot. He was disciplined before the game! He has done at least two stupid things on the field that directly impacted he ability of Dallas to, in the Eagles game they were on a drive to win it, and against the Cardinals he screwed up a potential comeback with a dumb taunting call. You cannot win with guys like that.

As per the Steelers and what they have done trading for DK and paying him, I agree...dumb. And their offense does suck.

Right, Schotty disciplined him, Tomlin defended him publicly and enabled him. Surely, you can see the difference.

The thing is the only way I would come to Pittsburgh as a FA being a WR is if they overpay me. I’ve said for years, this is where WR’s stats go to die. The only other type is at the end of their career,or a one year cheap prove it deal.
Pickens was never going to stay with us after seeing what was going on. It would have cost him millions over his career.
I’m quite surprised Pat signed a second contract.

It’s why I believe our next WR has to be a high draft pick.

Not right after the Eagles game. Not after the Cardinals game. And he didn't start. That was the discipline. Oh, boy. That showed him! I'm sure he learned. So much better than Tomlin.

It means nothing. Absolutely nothing.

George Pickens is incredibly talented deep ball threat. In my opinion he will get in his own way of being a great player. The Steelers het great talent cheap at the position for a reason. You could literally tell he was a numbskull on what he did draft night with the Schisty mask standing in front of his TV. The Cowboys will put up with more. Which is part of their own problems.

Every team handles discipline differently so perhaps there were warnings after the two bone headed plays, who knows. But to Windy's point, he WAS disciplined and whether you or I feel it wasn't enough doesn't matter. Tomlin never did **** to keep his players in check. His team's have no discipline, structure, nor an identity. But that is another topic for another day. I digress.

I believe that the bottom line for getting rid of him was that we couldn’t afford him.
What I mean by afford is by having an inept offense we couldn’t afford to have an immature distraction be a member of this group.

Good decision to be rid of him.

Well, to use your parameters, we also have no idea what Tomlin did behind closed doors. I do know this, token discipline like the Cowboys did may mean less than nothing. Especially with a guy like Pickens. Anyone who has coached or worked with young people knows that. Either do something serious, or don't do it at all.

Great post. Amazing what's possible with an actual NFL QB throwing him passes?
Picken's was a stud with Trash at QB, league worst level trash. KP, Fields, Wilson. All bottom of the league by a country mile.
Add two of the worst OC in the league and a coach that should have ran out of excuses a decade ago.

I am glad Picken's is gonna get the payday he deserves, and show the world he was never the problem.
A guy with that level talent how could he respect Tomlin, Smith and the clown show at QB?? Would you?
Winning and making the Steelers look like the fools for trading him away from this perennial failure of an organization.
For a franchise that has been desperately scraping the bottom of the barrel for a competent WR#2 for multiple years now
There could not be a bigger egg on they're face as the world watches GP Blow up as the WR #1 in Dallas at the exact moment they're wondering how they paid 34 million dollars for DK to be more bum than baller.
LOL

I just don't understand what you are seeing. The original post starts out acknowledging he was being disciplined at the beginning of the game. He has had negative impact on one game the Cowboys were driving to win, and another in which they were attempting a comeback. The extra targets and stats are not keeping him from doing stupid things. The problem is with Pickens himself. Stop making excuses for him.

Only the Jets, Raiders, Titans, and Browns average less yards than us per game.

We average 198 passing yards a game. Haven't averaged 200 a game since 2022. Rodgers doesn't even have a 250 yard day this season. If I was Pickens I would've ran all the way to Dallas.

Only Bengals, Raiders, and Titans average less rushing yards a game than us at 88 per game.

The Tomlin conservative philosophy just doesn't work anymore, nor will it attract WR FAs unless we overpay.

Pickens may have been a problem, but I'd argue an anemic offence (8 of AR's TDs came in 2 games against the Jets, and Bengals respectively), is the bigger problem.

Very true, but we've had countless diva receivers doing stupid ****, posting stupid ****, and taking plays off...and I've never seen a benching of any of them that I can remember. Why does it keep happening on Tomlin teams? Receiver after receiver they flood in with poor character that goes undisciplined. It's a trend.

I agree with that. This is not a defense of Tomlin's discipline procedures. What I am arguing against is the idea that if the Steelers ran a better offense, Pickens would have been a good soldier. He is still having problems in Dallas, so I don't think that is accurate.

It was anything but dumb getting DK. The dumb part was not getting a legit #2 to take the double and some times triple coverage off him. There was no point bringing in Rodgers for this JV scheme.

Then I agree with your premise, Diver. He will never be a good soldier. In fact, I'd argue he will only get a worse attitude when he's upping his numbers and getting paid ridiculous numbers. Like AB, he has tremendous talent that is only surpassed by his ego.

If you're paying a WR that much, he shouldn't need someone take the pressure off him. I don't think Adam Theilen is why Justin Jefferson is so good, Jaxson Smith-Njiba is having a great season because teams are worried about their #2? If you're a top WR you should be able to create your owns space.
