Disguised coverages.. timing passes over the middle, more standard blocking techniques along the oline.

So much of the scheme will be QB dependent. If you have a limited QB then you have to scheme to that. The problem is there are only a few guys that take their QBs and make them better with their scheme. If we can find one of those then that's what I want.
The throwing over the middle etc is what we all want but you need a guy that can do it without consistently giving the ball away.
I wouldn't be surprised if we looked at some of the younger inexperienced guys: Klayton Adams, Adam Stenavich, Hank Fraley all fit the mould of what the Steelers have gone for in the past but none of them have significant (any!) experience as playcallers. But neither did Tomlin or Cowher.
Arthur Smith without Tomlin hovering over the top would be another obvious option, and a much lower risk one.
Should be a fascinating process.

I would look at a guy like Bobby Slowik for OC. From what I've seen, his scheme makes it easy on the QB. Not sure what happened in 2024 in Houston, but I thought he did pretty well there in 2023. Certainly embarrassed the Steelers Defense. It's a low bar, but still.

Back to a Todd Haley style offense where we go after what our opponents’ defenses do not do well. Instead of the same thing every game.

I would like to see more run oriented schemes where the oline run blocks and not always stepping back into a pass block.


More utilization of TE’s and more underneath routes. I like to see utilization of bootlegs and hitting the middle of the field to keep the chains moving.


On defense, less soft zone coverage.
There is good core group to work with ( Herbig, Wilson, Watt, Black, Harmon, Highsmith and JPJ)

They might just be stupid enough to trade head coaches! if tomlin was to still wanted to coach! Too be honest I think it would help both franchises… Shanahan in Pittsburgh Ya!!!

Scheme was one of the most legit criticisms against Tomlin. What do you want out? Added? Increased?

I am hoping for play action to be common. Also want that two down lineman gone. Really can't stand the prevent with a two point lead. Maybe a challenge coach and a clock manager worth a hoot?

I'm looking forward to someone running a current NFL offense, and not playing turtle ball all year in fear of turning the ball over just to keep everyone game close, sure you can win 9 games playing like that, but you have no shot winning in the playoffs like that.

And that''s what it was : A no risk no reward philosophy.

There were times opponent defensive alignments didn't allow it, but you still have to take a shot once in a while, especially this season when he had the guy who is the most accurate passer this team has ever had. He lived in his fears.

A modern offense like Shanahan's in San Fran. The irony that he is running that offense which is not evolved from the West Coast Offense on the team that birthed the WCO. It would fit the Steelers perfect as it's deep passing set up by the run. Keep Metcalf bring in a legit #2 and we are in business.

Most teams still run evolved versions of the WCO, but there are quite a few now running Shanahan's system. Make it so. And yes we need a mobile QB.
