Mr. Rooney is not obtuse to the situation

According to reports Rooney indicated he was surprised by Mike’s decision and that he couldn’t say for sure but it was probably family related over football related.

So if Rooney didn’t influence the situation then that leaves a concern for him remaining as the owner.

He's a Rooney.
There is no effect whatsoever of concern vs non- concern in his ownershop status.

If your neighbor doesn't like your kids, should you be concerned with your ownership state in regards to your home?

I heard that about family which I think is curious since his kids are all adults now.
I think Mikey T. and his family to some degree heard the noise from Steeler fans around the city.
That and the pressure of yet another playoff loss, then every season having to scrounge around the league for another retread QB.
I think it all just came to a head for Mikey T.
Remember Art last season saying the goal was to win a playoff game this year and Tomlin didn’t deliver. Rooney couldn’t have been happy so who knows. We’ll never know.
As for the current staff! Get on with your life’s work.
Other than Artie Smith and Tom Arth who will get other jobs, no one will hire the other mooks.

That's what they're telling you on the outside. I doubt it's actually that. It doesn't really matter at this point.

You would never diminish his value for other opportunities. His draft capital over the next two years.

Makes sense.

This is what concerns me...this quote today from Rooney. "'I think there are a lot of things that go into being a successful head coach," said Rooney. "Number one is leadership, and trusting this person can stand up in front of your team day in and day out and hold their attention and have them motivated to do what they do. So, that's the most important." The Steelers have not lost because they were unmotivated or weren't attentive...they lost because their staff could not out scheme anyone when it mattered the most. They never utilized strengths and weaknesses, and they were too stubborn to adapt. Like I said in another thread, Find a head coach that can be a great conductor of an orchestra, that can bring in an OC, DC, and STC that are the best at what they do and let them do their jobs. Bring in great teachers as position coaches that can develop young talent and get the most out of late round pics. All the motivational rah-rah bullshit is just that. Tomlin had to motivate and use his word salads because he could not offer anything else. All year long, all we heard was "communication" on defense and players have to execute better. Maybe we should try something different if after 17 weeks guys still are not on the same page and not executing. If Rooney thinks you can "motivate" your team to victory he is sorely mistaken.

He's lost too if he thinks rah rah will get it done vs the elite teams who actually play the game like chess.

It's no wonder why they get pummeled in round one. You can't smash people anymore. So unless they change the rules of engagement up, they'd better get some smart tactical coaches who can battle plan.

They haven't been fundamentally sound or consistent in a long time. That motivation nonsense doesn't last. You should already be motivated and when motivation goes, you have self discipline.

That always wins. You saw discipline in the Texans defense. They knew the Steelers offense better than the Steelers did.

Chuck Noll during his interview process with Dan Rooney when asked how he would lead the historically terribleSteelers into the future..

The Emperors stated with “fundamentals, teaching, and with building through the draft.”

It landed him the job and also was the words that led to the mantra for the “Steeler Way.”

I believe Art Rooney would do well to remember that through his process for the next Steeler head coach.

I mean it was time... very very few nfl coaches have stayed in one place 19 years or more...

He spent his wad after the 16/17 AFC cg run and honestly has been spinning his wheels since then... few coaches have success after 10 years with the same team... ...sometimes change is healthy for all parties

He also said they were kind of expecting it and didn't try to change his mind either. Mutual agreement we could say

It’s time for Art to step aside. I don’t know what his son Dan would be like but I do think the organization needs a fresh and younger set of eyes.
Art at 74 should want to step aside and enjoy his retirement now.
It’s time now Dan just like it was for Mikey T.

I disagree. I liked hearing this from Rooney. I said I want 2 things in a new HC. A coach who can command the room (leadership) and a top X's and O's mind. Mike McDaniel knows offense, but he seemed too goofy to lead a team. Did his players take him seriously?

I saw some comments regarding why he resigned...I agree I find it hard to believe it's due to family. There may have been some burnout, however, he's a football junky. I think the lack of playoff success and the criticism he was facing from the fans, local media, and even a few in the national media began to wear thin. Tomlin was untouchable for the longest time and that began to fade. Booing and "fire Tomlin" chants put him in the same category as Matt Canada and Bob Nutting. The Steelers dumped experienced veterans and a Hall of Fame QB onto the roster to make one more run. He made no changes to his staff that failed last year right after promising change. In his last PC, he mentioned talk is cheap and his talk became cheap. He couldn't deliver and hasn't for a long time.

I do think ARII is also tired of not winning in the playoffs. I wasn't convinced from his PC that Rooney planned on giving Tomlin an extension. I've heard for years that investors have wanted a change and Rooney probably wants to see playoff success as well. I know a lot on this board don't like him, but I think he will do his best to make the right hire. I hope he doesn't disappoint.

That was music to my ears! It’s the staffs fault we’re in this mess! My friends think I’m crazy and that most Steeler fans are crazy 10-7 won the division but they don’t know!! We’ve never gone into a season with worse wr’s, o-line, secondary, linebackers it was ridiculous! And it’s the fault of the staff it’s up to them put the players in a position to make plays! Instead we put the franchise on a third stringer rb from Philly and a 43 yr old qb! Seattle had the biggest turn around in the NFL by getting rid of a loner underachieving overpaid wr and bringing in a team oriented overachieving affordable wr from the rams. Worked for them not so much for us.

Yes he needs to go too. I watched the whole press conference as sleepy potato Rooney knocked the starch off himself and got up to the podium to tell us several times that " With Mike we were always in contention."

Either the man was just being nice to Tomlin, and I REALLY hope that is the case or he is so out of touch that he actually believes that. He said it several times and the way it was phrased made me lean toward him actually believing it. Lord help us....

His words..
Thank goodness!

“You know, right now I don't think that anybody on our staff is a candidate," Rooney said. "Maybe a candidate to stay on the staff, depending on what the new head coach wants to do, but probably not as a head coach."
Because no one is young enough. He wants a guy he can keep for the next 20 years no matter the results.

According to Pat Kirwin (Sirius) who I thinknits along the most knowledgeable analysts, believes the Steelers are in great salary cap position and they could phase out the high (older player) contract over the next couple years without eating a lot of dead cap money.

Great post. It has to be an offensive minded coach. He can hire a good DC and let him handle the D, but the offense needs to evolve out of the late 90s and early 2000s.

Emperor Chaz also famously said something along the lines of not being a motivator, not paid for that. His job is to teach players the game, scheme, and their responsibility. If he had to motivate them, they should find another line of business.
I almost agree with that.
Cowher was 100% a motivator. But he was smart in that he surrounded himself with great OCs and DCs and assistants to teach, instruct, and develop the players. I’m OK with approach, too.
