Steelers will reportedly decline Broderick Jones' 5th-year option

Let's be honest -- before his injury, Jones wasn't really playing up to the standards of a #14 overall pick in the draft...was he?
Nope, but he Might have been tagged

There is zero chance that Colbert wanted to trade up for Bush, that's a Tomlin pick, trying to get his LB that can cover other teams WR's in his Dollar General Tampa 2. I'm always putting more of the blame on the coach than the GM. IMO the coach says who they want the GM makes it happen. The manager of a restaurant isn't going to go buy the ingredients if the Chef says no.
Its nice to speculate without facts huh?

That 5th year option would have a little over 19 million dollars guaranteed.

I think I’d side with you on this one.

You can’t blame the whole debacle on Broderick as Tomlin jacked him around his first two seasons.

He played decent 3rd, till injury. Had no injury occurred…… who knows his ability to date could be way better.

Salute the nation
Tomlin jacked him around how??

I always hate to see when we decline a fifth year option on a player…
That indicates a failure in your organizational process… either the draft process, player development process, or coaching failure… or all of the above..
We may get a glimpse as to whether the problem lies in coaching this year. No one was praising the developmental process from the previous staff. What has happened to Kevin Dotson (another thread) gives hope that Jones can be salvaged if healthy.

We kinda screwed Jones around, but his attitude didn't help either. When he played he ranged from serviceable to awful. I don't recall any games were he looked like a franchise tackle. I think coaching / scheme certainly played a part in that, but I agree that he should be on a prove it year

That non move was definitely expected given the scenario.

Best of luck to BJ getting healthy and having a long prosperous career where he can exit the game still healthy.

Best case scenario now is the Steelers getting a valuable prove it season out of him, hopefully he can return to health and stay healthy. Rooting for the young man.

Why would that be? The franchise tag would be $25.8 million. Jones's 5th year option was $19.1 million.

Either way, the neck injury was the nail in the coffin on his inauspicious career with the Steelers. They could not risk being on the hook for that amount of money to retain a pedestrian player coming off that type of surgery.

Because Rooney

This was revealed via 'trial balloon' about two weeks before the draft. Either Jones' neck is not right, or the Steelers want to move on or both. I'm guessing both.
