Omar evaluation

Was the formula I chose not to take credit if they started somewhere else and each team was evaluated with that same approach. I obviously know that it can be shared or tilted towards the second or third team. Etc.

That would have needed a lot more deciphering on a person to person basis.

Wasn’t really gluing into calling him something.. was more glued into an approach that could compare all the teams in regards to one aspect..

I think you put a lot of work into this and it sure shows in the original post that Kahn has been doing a pretty good job to date.

Things can be argued in many ways, but if the same criteria has been applied to all 32 teams, then it is a legit stat.

Remember the Kahn sat out his first draft because of Colbert being kept on… ( I think that had more to do with coach tomlin).

Thanks for all your great post(s) and insight slash, appreciate yaz…!!!

Tied 5th out of 32, that is pretty good.

I think Andy Weild also should be mentioned because I truly feel he has as much to do with drafting as the Kahn.

The Kahn pulls the trigger and makes the deals so he is actually a step up from Andy.

EDIT: Andy is better talent / needs ability, player evaluation type stuff.

I know you know this about me but some don’t.

When I evaluate something anything as a project I take away any opinion before I go into it. As with Omar I didn’t predetermine he was good or bad. Nor did I say to myself if he was bad then I would still stay the course that he was good or vice versa.

If he stunk I would simply have said it wasn’t pretty we need better.

I was locked into Howard it took one preseason for me to cool my breaks. Well documented I don’t care for Rudolph. But if Rudolph is the better option over Howard? Bye Will.

I always will be about team first my opinion second.

For me Omar has started off pretty decent. I like that we aren’t Peterson our free agent approach. That out of 32 teams our team is drafting starters at a pretty good ratio in an NFL comparison.

That pendulum could change down the road and that would be fine too. Then I would want change.

This is what have you done for me lately league, i think the majority of us really are simplistic in our wants.

Be competitive, sprinkle in some playoff wins , and show some hope for more.

That is a good base want. Of course then there is additional wants a championship game, a SB visit, a win. Show us at least a sound base. That isn’t spoiled, that isn’t unreasonable.

Just win !

Oh definitely. Andy was brought aboard and given a decent title they know he can evaluate. I love his trenches influence..

Not an ouchie for Omar, an ouchie for Tombert sure.
Never a losing season, greatest coach everrrr.....

Overall, I'd give the Khan Man a C.

I know.. i was just poking the bear out of boredom, lol

I think he is a B but we are talking one grade difference here. 👏
I'd say B if Broderick Jones had worked out although that's more on Coach Shades.

Good to touch on that as I didn’t with your WR comment. If this new group of coaches can coach them up, then the youth will be well served and the team will benefit from that improvement.

As that is what will matter. I look at the Patriots and Seattle they were taught and coached up.

Never can underestimate what knowing X and Os can do for a team. What teaching well can do for a team. Putting players in a position to succeed can do for a team.

Being able to adapt adjust .. what it can do for a team.

We will see how many of these fits our new coaches. I love they have an opportunity to find out…

A HC stirs the drink
MT was a straw less HC

His drink was simple, unstirred, room temp flat water…as basic ***** as a drink could be

Zero player development and rather than putting players in a position to succeed through manipulation of the Xs and Os he was simply a human hurdle standing in the way of success

He needed someone to relieve him of the stirring, a coach on the field, a HOF caliber QB to assign the stirring to…without that he was just room temp flat water

Omar was thrown a couple hurdles in the Trubisky and Pickett as Colbert exited the building. Time will tell, but the QBs he has selected so far look far closer to potential solutions than any of the **** Tombert was slinging at the wall

Ok spelling police 😀

Sometimes autocorrect takes over a whole new meaning comes to life.

I generally don’t proof read and I do have some finger / hand(s) problems so yes,…… things can get varied.

I kind of like that as it gives a little confusion and happiness at the same time………………..

Spot on and I love the analogy as well, “flat water” is historic in the Tomlin adjective world.

Trubisky and Pickett, although neither is headed to the HOF, were saddled with working under the worst OC in modern times.*
Again that's on Coach Shades and his long-standing commitment to hiring his buddies.

* Matt Canaduh was the first Steelers coach to be fired in mid-season since 1945. Only because he was so bad that without Ben he was putting Shades' "never a losing season" streak at risk.

The only reason to dislike Rudy is he kept the streak going 🤣

There are a lot of these Omar breakdowns on social media these days.. its still comically too early since his first draft was only 2023..

Most are pretty basic too.. evaluating GM draft pick success is extremely complicated and most generic formulas dont do it proper justice.

So lets say we are looking at 2023... thats only 3 years of data and really not close to enough to make a proper evaluation because many players are far from the overall form their career will be judged by.. for instance, Cam Heyward is an A++ pick, but after only 3 years hed probably have gotten a C grade... after just one or two seasons, it would have been much lower.. on the flip side Kendrell Bell probably still gets an A grade after season 3... hed have gotten an A++ after one or two years.. overall its probably a B- type grade, maybe lower

Drafts are notoriously unique.. talent levels and depth varies year to year and position by position

To be thorough, an evaluation need to account for what the player they took ultimately contributed to the team on comparison to who was available in the draft and what other players contributed

Other issues must be factored in, such as Injuries or Asset return.. so say, Ryan Shazier would still garner a higher grade even though a freak injury wiped hom out of football.. the pick was great, the FO shouldnt get dinged for bad luck.. though that can be different if the player came with injury red flags that were ignored such as Trice

As for asset recovery, how a player left the team matters.. were they cut early, did they leave in UFA for a bigger contract? Were they traded and what did that trade return? So lets look at Chase Claypool..

Claypool, overall, seems like a failed pick, but he was not... in 2.5 seasons here he gave the steelers 27 starts, over 250 receptions and over 2000 yards, which are fine numbers for the 49th overall pick his first 2.5 seasons... he was then traded for what turned into the 32nd overall pick in the 2023 nfl draft...
The player fell apart and was quickly out of the league, but the actual contributions he made to the team were good for his draft position and the Asset return was greater than the initial pick they invested... making it a good pick..

Now lets look at Spenser Anderson.. the final pick in that initial Omar Khan 2023 draft.. I see a lot of low to middling grades on that pick.
there were 42 picks in that seventh round... he was the 34th one.
He has also developed into an extremely valuable backup who can play all 5 positions on the Oline. As well as being a jumbo package blocking specialist. He has given the team 11 starts in those 3 seasons...

To understand what that means... of the 42 7th round picks, only 15 have started a game in the NFL in any capacity... only 5 of them have double digit starts in the first 3 years of their career.. Anderson is fourth on that list.
As far as Snaps played for a team, Anderson has played 866... 694 on O and 172 on ST..
thats 6th most among all 42 2023 7th rounders.. moreover, eliminating ST snaps, thats fifth most among O and D players... among Offensive players only, thats 2nd... only Vorhees from the ravens has played more on offense...

There are 5 guys you can say are better or as good picks as he was.. Jaylon Jones, drafted 4th in that round, Andrew Vorhees, drafted 22th, Carrington Valentine, drafted 15th.. and Moro Ojomo, drafted 32nd...

So none were on the board when Anderson was drafted

For where he was drafted, he has far surpassed the expected value .. he should be around and A to B+ rating at worse..

The other pick in the 7th round was a bust due to injury, but still a very good shot at a home run on a 7th rounder.. Corey Trice had red flags over injuries... and ultimately they proved true.. he only played in six games for the Steelers in the 3 years since he was drafted.. but the talent was undeniable..

he racked up 193 defensive snaps and got 1 start in those 6 games.. so discounting ST snaps, he was 16th among 2023 7th rounders in snaps played (23rd counting STSnaps) he was one of those 15 to actually get a start.. he had a pick, a couple PD's and a couple TFLs in those six games.. so he showed playmaking ability..

Yes he was a failed player due to injuries.. but that was a good gamble that just didnt play out... the scouting was solid, the luck was not...

The only reason to dislike Rudy is he kept the streak going 🤣
In Shades' last few years the goal changed from winning Super Bowls to winning 9 games.

If they (fans) can call for his firing then he can be evaluated. Twitter has that label left and right. Obviously each year would change the evaluation. Cam wasn’t part of my eval as he wasn’t a starter drafted by Omar. Omar shouldn’t get kudos or negativity involving players he didn’t have a hand in bringing to Pittsburgh.

Every team has injury situations. As you notice I didn’t grade out the starters on any of the teams. I could have gave partial credit for players who started then was injured. But I was doing here and now and didn’t want a skewed player tally perception popping up.

Really if you keep the basic principles/approach across the board you can see in general how a GM did in that regards. The draft is a big event that GMs have their hat attached to.

Also for me I think three years is a decent time frame. Players get fine tooth combed yearly. Just because anyone is new to their job doesn’t mean they can’t get evaluated .That is usually always an ongoing process no matter where you are at.

… you would think more experienced GMs would have pushed the Steelers lower in that tally and it didn’t.

One has to also realize that the Kahn isn’t new to the Steelers by any means.

He has been with the team in the money side of things for awhile.

So he has been involved through out the draft and retaining said drafted players the tough contract negotiations.

Kahn has easily been around long enough to evaluate.

I did an extensive exhausting research with triple checking A I adjusting starters home grown only over Omar’s tenure with the guideline as a teams undrafted can count. Warren was outside of the timeline BTW . For example Cook wasn’t our home grown UDFA but Tampa’s.

8 of 22 = 36.4% of their projected starters coming from their own 2023-26 draft classes.

I think it is fair teams can include their own undrafted into the equation.

I kept the criteria the same for each team. Where did your starters come from someone else’s evaluation or your own?

Which Omar - Steelers comes in tied for 5th out of 32.

So to date Omar has arguably done well.
Everybody loves Omar...

Yup, as soon as Ben didn’t have the ability to schlepp the mediocre one to the promised land the definition of what the promised land is changed
