Steelers select Dri Archer in Round 3

..but the other guy was bigger and more durable, and carried a full workload through 3+ years of a major college, and had a RB skillset, and didn't fumble more often than Richard Huntley. So they're not very comparable. It's like saying, "Archer is small, and Jones-Drew was kinda small, so they're the same player!!"

Again, and I'm merely suggesting this as a theory, but perhaps some of those concerns are why he lasted till round 3, and perhaps, and I'm only guessing here, the Steelers coaching staff think there is a possibility he can be taught to do what they are going to ask him to do in our system. Again, it might just be they threw feces at the wall and picked whomever's name it hit. Were they correct, or incorrect in their thoughts? I suppose by the end of this season we'll have a good idea, right now, I'd say all we can really do is keep having the same ************* discussion for 75 pages. Which, by the way, I'm fine with, it's not like there is any football on to watch anyway, horray offseason!

We are all iffy on whether he has an WR skillset going forward. Some more or less then others. But now we are questioning if he has RB skillset? Really?

well, some of us have color coded tabbed spreadsheets and ****
them's the smart ones.

How can you look at this guy and see only negatives. Like you dont see any positives at all.... Yes he is fast but watching thats not all I see. He is plus in more then just speed. But oh well training camp will be here soon enough

I wasn't very clear there. I included RB skillset in a list of things that make up a RB skillset, which doesn't make much sense.

Yes, I question Archer's RB skillset, as does pretty much everyone. To some degree, everyone in this thread questions it. Even you have said repeatedly that you think he's a question mark who could bust, right? You just like his potential more than others.

What is a RB skillset, anyway?

he will get broke in half.
i have it encoded in my spreadsheet using advanced analytics. don't ask. you couldnt possibly understand.

For me, it's not about seeing pos/neg so much as seeing college/pro. Look at guys like Tebow, Colt McCoy, Mark Ingram, Peter Warrick, the big USC receivers of the past decade, George Selvie, J Leman, a hundred more.. and you see guys who DOMINATED top-level college players but it just didn't translate. Pro and college are different, and not just because it's harder. Two completely different games with different requirements and different expectations.

My apologies, sir! I certainly hope I haven't troubled your day any. I'm just so embarrassed and.. well, ashamed.

BTW - you only posted 178 once. And you don't seem very confident in the numbers you gave.

It was actually first mention in the link about Tampa Bay's 1997 draft.

But hell, why read links when you just want to argue the same **** over and over?

The Warrick Dunn comparison is by far the closest analogy yet for Archer and it ties right into Tomlin's history/experience as a coach.

I would list Archer as a running back now on the depth chart and might explain why we haven't really looked into bringing in a 3rd running back with NFL experience or even a 3rd down-type player.

As Vader mentions, it's a matter of touches now. Bell and Blount should get their carries, but if Archer is electric then Blount could be sitting on the bench as insurance pretty quick.

Archer has to play big, show he can take some hits, hold onto the ball and not just fall down on first contact. We'll see if he's the next coming of Warrick Dunn that Tomlin envisions.

I am worried we are going to try and make a receiver/return out of him and his ball security suffers. That is a common problem with guys that don't have a lot of punt return experience. They struggle with some drops or poor decisions to run (and get hit/fumble).

But his speed doesn't change when he gets to the pros hell he might ran faster if so big as d-linemen is closing in on him

If you cant see that his ball carrier vision is top notch. I dont know what to tell you. Will that carry over? We will see.

No, but the player's speed around him sure as hell changes. This isn't Central Michigan or Ball State anymore. The guys around him aren't running a 5.0, they are running 4.5 and are a lot bigger and stronger.

Great read, thanks antdrewjosh

The gut reaction of Steelers fans is to notice Dri Archer's height. Or lack of it.

Steelers head coach is fully aware of that. That's not the best way to describe him, though.

"He is short, not small," Tomlin said in the press conference announcing the team's third round pick.

To illustrate Tomlin's comment, look at the current NFL players that experts compare Archer along side. Tavon Austin of the St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs' Dexter McCluster. Archer is expected to fill a similar role for the Steelers that these players do for their respective NFL football teams, but how does Archer compare in terms of size and skill set.

Austin stands 5-foot-8, 174 pounds, McCluster 5-foot-9 172 pounds and Archer stands 5-foot-9, 173 pounds. All three of these players are nearly the exact same size, but their differences are there as well.

The most common denominator between these three players is their speed. Looking at each individuals NFL Combine results, you'll see McCluster who ran a 4.58, Austin ran a 4.34 and Archer ran a combine best 4.26. Strength is another test that shows a separation between these players. Archer and McCluster both benched 225 pounds 20 times, while Austin was able to push out 14 repetitions. Lastly, their vertical jump results showed Archer jumping the highest at 38 inches. McCluster jumped 37.5 inches, and Austin jumped 32 inches.

There are differences, but all three players wreak of explosiveness. The fact that Archer was able to get 20 repetitions on the bench press shows his strength, while still running the fastest time at the 2014 combine shows that he isn't built simply for speed, but can withstand the contact that will come with his position.

Tomlin hit the nail on the head when he said that Archer was "short, but not small". When an NFL player is 5'8" and 173lbs there needs to be a sense of imagination and creativity that comes with putting that player in a position to succeed. That job will come down to offensive coordinator, Todd Haley, but don't think that Archer doesn't have the intangibles to get the job done.

Every time he touches the ball he is a threat to go the distance, and when he breaks off big chunks of yardage I doubt fans will complain about his size.

dude.. this whole 76 pages isn't about the positives. its about being a reach for a 3rd round pick when we have more holes in our lineup than the 1976 Buccaneers.

Was talking to Idioteque. Who doesnt see any positives to his game. Not that I know of anyway. Secondly how was it a reach? He went right around where most had him. A reach would of been taking a CB whom you had rated lower on your board. After Phillip Gaines they didnt like any other corners until Richardson. The WR they considered taking over Archer they got anyway.

I think I've got it now, it would have been ok to take a, pick position, that was on the board but with a much lower grade than Archer and it would not have been a reach. In spite of all the depth in this draft there may have been a lot of projects in this draft. One RB I would have considered was Seastrunk? I think they brought him in for a visit, and bigger 5-9 210lbs than Archer. Although he was picked much later.

Does anyone believe that Archer was the BPA at the time? Yes, I know mock drafts had him in the 3rd to 4th round. But they aren't drafting for particular teams. They are just rating where they think someone will get picked. Which is why a player like Jeffcoat gets bypassed.

I'm sorry but figuring out where to play a player is not something you should have to do to a 3rd round pick. I can see the conversation now:

Tomlin: "We got pure speed. Archer is very fast. He can really run."

Reporter: "Where are you going to play him?"

Tomlin: "Hell if I know but he is fast... did I say he was fast?"
