I predicted a year ago that by the time Obama leaves office we will be seeing signs of a severe labor
shortage in the United States. The above article is a clear indication I'm on track to be correct.
We now are at record levels of job openings, and just in July an additional 400K job openings were
added.

The big disconnect is that Americans are not getting the right education and building the right skills for the
jobs that are becoming available now and in the future.

Also the big disconnect on immigration is that many Americans are leaving the US for job opportunities
world-wide, but we aren't letting people in to replace them. Until the last several years I knew nobody
working in foreign countries and now I have a cousin in China, one in the Caribbean and one in India.
Opportunities of the future are world-wide.

how ******* dense are you?

So, the uneducated (mostly) masses crossing the boarder have the skills needed? Seems unlikely.

This is an education thread not an immigration thread.

yeah, he addressed that. I'll highlight that for you.

It's a thread by someone who is uneducated about immigration, true unemployment numbers and just about everything else in the world.

It's the uneducated citizens who aren't qualified for the openings. It's why companies import Asians and Europeans to fill jobs.

That would be the vast majority of people who come out of public schools run by unionized teachers and with curriculum designed by far-Leftist college professors?

If they just had more money.....

I don't think our kids are unprepared for tech jobs mainly because they aren't getting enough evolution information.

science isn't about the facts it's about how you find the facts. Throw out the bible and all evolution theory and start again with people who know how science works and evolution gets discovered again. Nothing in Genesis is.

So to teach creationism you have to cast doubts on all the science that proves evolution. People who buy into that crap will never discover the everlasting battery.

This is so far down the list of problems with our education system as to be laughable. Not to mention the tiny number of schools it actually affects. I know atheism is your pet cause but get real. Kids who are even discussing, questioning and debating this issue are probably far more inquisitive and informed than many.

It's not down the list because science departments have backed off real science and real science is how we figure out how to deal with the challenges of huge populations, dwindling resources and the hotter climate the scientifically illiterate continue to deny. Once a kid knows how to read, science is the most important subject for our species. Atheism doesn't come into it because we could just follow the Pope on these issues. He's no creationist and he's no denier.

What no one wants to face is that the main problem with our education system is that poor kids who are raised in bad neighborhoods without parental involvement are trapped by virtue of their zip code and poverty with legions of other poor kids raised in bad neighborhoods without parental involvement. That's the problem that no one wants to talk about, that's the reason why some kids get great educations in this country and others get ****** ones, that's the issue. Until we fix the way education is allocated we will forever have this problem. Don't worry about the kids raised by religious parents, most of them are going to do just fine. Worry about the kids raised by no parents at all and how our education system condemns them to a permanent prison trapped with others just like them.

Actually, there is a severe labor shortage in Engineering, IT, Nursing and Finance/Accounting.

As a staffing professional, the majority of my Engineering and IT fills are H1B visa holders. Finding a good internal auditor or reporting financial analyst is a nightmare.

I don't think we'll find good internal auditors or reporting financial analyst geniuses in the dredges of humanity sloughing across the southern border under shadow of night.

How are we supposed to fix this problem when the average salary for a working person is around 50K a year, while an education at a most universities is close to six figures, and in some cases over that. How in the hell can a working class person afford to educate their child/children.

Just like in the immigration boom of the 1800's, we should have our borders open to those willing to work legally, register and pay taxes.

Our economy could regain manufacturing if we let the mexicans do it at $15.00/hour and we stop letting unions demand that some pin head with a 10th grade education gets a $75,000/year job with pensions and can retire at 55.

I'm all for building stuff. I just don't know how any liberal union backer can think we can do it on the idea we pay assembly line workers twice as much as construction workers. It just makes no sense.

I want the factories here. I want to let mexicans into the country. Send us your masses!

But have them sign on the dotted line. Demand they have $250 in their pocket first. Prosecute companies that skirt the issue. Make them pay taxes.

I work in construction and we are BEGGING for mexicans to work for us. We just can't find enough legal ones. They work harder and longer. Don't *****. Don't call in sick once/month.

The truth is this isn't a racist issue. It's not anti-Mexican. It's about how to be American about letter hard-working foreigners come to our country to find the American Dream and not let the system just collapse into chaos (which is what has happened under both Democrat and Republican rule.

There is a shortage overall or there is a shortage of engineers willing to work for $13 an hour? H1B visas are a scam.

Read the employment outlook and the surveys. The salaries are there, the talent is not.

This is a lie. At a recent college night, the major universities in this state were around $20k a year. With zero financial aid, that is significantly less than six figures for a 4 year degree. When you kick in that many students who work hard in high school could and have parents with low income, probably, get 1/2 of that in grants/scholarships, you get down to less than $50k for a 4 year degree.

Sure, if you want to go to a private school or out of state, that **** gets expensive. That is individual choice, not mandatory.

Ark is correct. The tuition for the UC system in California - one of the best educational opportunities in the world and including UC Berkley and UCLA - is $13,400 per year. Not per semester, but per year. The greater expense is housing and food.

But calculating that it will cost "x" for rent and food and including that cost for the expenses associated with education is bullshit. What, if I don't go to college, I don't eat and don't have to pay rent??

Good point. About 1/2 of that 20k was room and board. So, the education is around 10k per year.
