50 killed in attack at Afghanistan's Kandahar airport

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN)Fifty people have died in an attack at a market bazaar and a school near Kandahar airport that began late Tuesday, Afghan officials said.

The number included 38 civilians, 10 Afghan National Army soldiers and two policemen, the Afghan Defense Ministry said in a statement Thursday.

Another 35 people were wounded.

Nine terrorists were also killed, the ministry said. And one was wounded.

The Taliban took responsibility for the attack.

The assault occurred hours after a "Message to Obama" was posted to a video site, purportedly of Taliban suicide attackers warning that U.S. troops would not be safe in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan's Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said Wednesday night that the Kandahar attack was over.

He claimed 11 attackers were killed and that the airport property was never penetrated.

Taliban fighters carrying machine guns had targeted foreign forces, a Taliban spokesman said in a statement.

Kandahar, the second-largest city in Afghanistan, is about 480 kilometers (300 miles) southwest of the capital of Kabul.

Taliban gunmen opened fire at a bazaar near the Kandahar airport at 6:20 p.m. local time (8:50 a.m. ET) Tuesday, said Samim Ekhpelwak, a spokesman for the governor of Kandahar province. Afghan forces returned fire.

CNN's Masoud Popalzai reported from Kabul and CNN's Don Melvin reported and wrote in London. CNN's Chieu Luu, Dakota Flournoy and Steve Almasy contributed to this report.

Where's my boy Steel Vanguard? Couldn't help but remember this dialogue back in October when I saw this article posted today in another thread.

Since October, we've had San Bernadino and Paris. France is now raiding mosques throughout their country.

Guess what they found? *GULP* *SHOCKING*

France Raids Mosques…

Nah, Mosques aren't recruitment and training centers for terrorism. Just good, peaceful Muslim places of worship.

Churches are recruitment centers for the KKK.

That's an equally ridiculous statement, which ALSO happens to have a nugget of truth to it. SOME churches preach hate just like SOME mosques promote radicalism.

That's not a complicated concept to understand.

Yup I know my church has a hidden room full of arms.

This is America. Guns in church is no rare phenomenon...

So a good citizen carring is the comparison to a cellar full of arms for the muzzie troops. Yup keep going.

I have served communion in my church many times with a 9mm somewhere on my person. Am I supposed to let some nutjob like Dylann Roof just come in and shoot people?

Maybe that's why Mosques in France had weapons....

You really prepare for even the most remote of circumstances.

I am more than ever depending on people like Ron to respond. This has crossed the chasm. We need citizens with guns. Come get some. Please.

I don't know. I don't have a problem with responsible law abiding citizens carrying, but the majority of shootings occur in bad neighborhoods and are committed by criminals.

The anti-gun movement wants you to believe there's a good chance of being a shooting victim anytime, anyplace. Mass and random shootings are major national news stories. Everyday gang and targeted violence is largely ignored except when it comes time for statistics, then everything gets lumped together. They're trying to redefine the real problem. That's hysteria, I don't buy into it.

Most shootings occur in bad neighborhoods by criminals. Most mass shootings occur in supposed "gun-free zones". If I'm in a zone then it probably isn't gun-free.

guy i used to work with posted on FB that "all gun owners are potential mass murderers"
I responded that "all men are potential rapists"

he didnt like that at all.

Glad you think there's a difference. Because I've been against assault weapon ownership in the US for a long time but the NRA lobby is dead set against it.

If you think a 9mm and an AK-47 is different, why can't the 2nd amendment?

del, I realize you are being a devil's advocate for the most part, but the photo of a churchgoer wearing his 9 mm in open carry cannot - CANNOT - legitimately be analogized to a mosque hiding dozens of weapons, including rifles.

Have you found any information about a church hiding dozens of weapons? Maybe that crazy-*** ****, David Koresh, and his wanna-be church?

So do you see how mosques are more properly associated with crazy-*** guys like David Koresh than with Christian churches?

there's no such thing as an "assault weapon" anymore than there is a "bullet button".
gun control is utter bullshit. 2nd Amendment states just that. If I can find it and buy it, I should be able to own it. If I can make it from parts, I should be able to own it.

Interesting interpretation of "arms" that any weapon I can make should be legal.

Glad the Supreme Court doesn't agree with you on that.

I'm in the "keep and bear" camp. But I gotta ask a question here:

Where is the line? I say small arms. You really don't want to know what gang warfare looks like with RPGs and IEDs. So you gotta draw the line somewhere. Heavy weapons and explosives are only really useful in war zones, so I don't see much practical value to them in a peace time society. A machine gun is fine, but you wouldn't go full auto in a self defense situation anyway, you'd kill bystanders.

So where do you draw the line on the 2nd Amendment?

You don't draw a line on the second amendment. Next time you walk into a gun shop, and there is a RPG for sale, let me know.

Ok. So how about a tank? A howitzer? A homemade nuclear weapon?

All okay to keep and bear by Sarge's standards?
