The state of our secondary.

Cornerbacks:

Gay - He's the best we have, and a player that would be difficult to replace if injured as he's more than competent on the outside or slot

Cockrell - A smart playmaker type who lacks some speed. More of a sub package player than a starter.

Grant - A bit of a surprise, Grant looks faster and more confident in his second season. His tackling and playmaking ability were on display in the first two pre-season games. I think he's a little small for the outside but could help out a bit in the sub packages. Apparently, the coaches do not think he's suited for the slot corner role.

Burns - His camp and pre-season were ruined by injuries. When he practiced it was clear he wasn't ready. Because he's a rookie, Burns might not see the field unless an injury promotes him for a while.

Golson - Injured again, he's a complete question mark. It's unclear if he can play at all and alarming for a young player to have the what amounts to 1 1/2 seasons worth of injuries in his second year as a pro.

TBA. I'm not sure who our 5th corner is. He could be playing for another team. It might come down to special teams, though due to being Bruns being very green and Golson hurt, maybe it doesn't. Shabazz stood out in the Eagles game.

Conclusion: This unit lacks size, speed, and experience among the reserves. I think this is our worst cornerback unit in the past 15 seasons.

The pass rush must deliver, and I highly suspect coach Butler will have the men playing off in a zone type alignment more often than not, allowing too many easy completions to help prevent big plays.

Safties:

Mitchell - Looks solid in all phases of the game. If he matures just a bit and doesn;t get flagged he can rate among the best 10 safeties in football

Golden - I think he's our best pure coverage safety. Could be an under appreciated and undervalued player for us. Golden needs to stay healthy be as there is not depth behind him.

Davis - I wasn't a fan of the Davis pick. Had it been in round four okay, but I felt his coverage ability and tackling were red flags in college He has missed tackles in the pre-season and made just 1 vs. the Eagles. I do not think he's suited for the slot and feel deploying him as a rookie could be a little dangerous.

Thomas - Whether he has it above the neck this season is debatable. I did see some improvement, but I also saw him looking too unaware. A good man for special teams.

TBA - Usually this spot goes to special teams, and one of our best in
Ross Ventrone is hurt. Dangerfield is an option, but Tomlin hasn't shown him much respect in the past :) There a good chance this spot goes to a waiver wire player.

Conclusion: Our starters appear to be very solid, but the depth is a major issue. Pick your poison between the rookie who's missing tackles in Davis, an assignment challenged Thomas or TBA.

The glass is half full: With two rookies and Golson coming back, this unit will be better as the season progresses. The Steelers do have a lot of youth among the DB's

The glass is half empty. I see lots of holes in our dime defense, and if a front line starter goes down, the next man up will be exposed. Last year this unit rated 30th in the NFL, and faced 7 back up QB's. I tend to doubt we'll be facing as many back up QB's this year.

My biggest problem with the secondary, we continue to allow teams 3 and long and very long to pick up the yardage. We then somehow stop someone and our field position then sucks. So the offense then has a long field or start in a position on the field where our playing call is limited in the Steeler way. The secondary plays so soft because of type players we have.

Why get one of these weekly? The state of the secondary is the same, barring injury, until the regular season starts. Right now means very little.

Did we resign Blake? No... Then I like our chances.

Our secondary will be greatly tied to our abilities to rush the passer, as always.

If the D-line & LBs generate a pass rush, this group will look a LOT better.

Exactly! You need pressure on the QB to force them into misreads and inaccurate passes. But the secondary cannot have broken assignments and mistackles

Just to make it clear, Grant improving is not a surprise to some of us.

I am curious of how it ends up but as of right now I feel Gay and Grant outside with Cockrell and Davis coming in on sub packages. I personally would kick Gay inside on nickel and dime and have Cockrell play outside as that seems to be his forte. But then again I don't know if Gay wants to be kicked inside. Hopefully Golson can come back early October and be that slot guy he was drafted to be but I personally am not holding out too much hope. Even if he comes back we really don't know what we are getting.

Safety I feel will be ok. I think the combo of Golden and Thomas will be an improvement of what we had last year and if we can get anything out of Davis it's icing on the cake.

I think at this point we need our pass rush to be very good to help protect our secondary from having to cover too long.

Just to make it clear, Grant improving is not a surprise to some of us.

Players improve from year 1 to year 2, but Grant has been our best DB this pre-season. I never saw anyone suggest he would look this good.

As terrible as Blake was last season, he might be better now in comparison to Burns or Davis. No--I do not want him back. Just saying.

I liked Grant last year. I never understood why the FO didn't like him. He is more of a zone corner, but he is pretty solid.

Tomlin cut him at one point. I did not understand why either.

The offense better concentrate on putting up that 30 points per game that Ben was talking about.

Breakout player watch
Ross Cockrell, CB

Cockrell was just a fourth-round selection in 2014 and played almost no snaps in his rookie season. Last year, however, he took off, playing over 60 percent of the Steelers’ defensive snaps at the corner spot. He was targeted 74 times last season and allowed 47 receptions for 619 yards and four touchdowns. He also recorded two picks and nine pass defenses, however. His coverage grade of 81.8 was in the top-20 among corners last year.

Coach said **** sucks

I think Gay and Cockrell are solid, but we have no slot corner, and Gay can fill that role. Grant is moving to safety apparently, and Burns is not ready.

That's why I pimp Eric Rowe in a trade. He's tall, long arms, good speed. Similar to Burns, but more polish and also healthy and ready to play.

Please don't try to put words in your mouth that I never said.

I think Cockrell is a good sub package play, and an all right #2 corner. On most teams he's the 3rd outside corner, but here on the Steelers he's our 2nd best for now.

Zack,

What would you project to be our dime defense? #5 and #6...major problems.

I have not seen much dime defense in the first two pre-season games. I wonder why.

It was a joke calm down..

I assume Cockrell, Gay, Davis, Grant will be out there. Davis in a corner like role. Golden and Mitchell at Safety.

I think Cockrell has more upside than he's given credit for, especially in a zone-based defense like the Steelers run.

The reason the Bills cut him was that he was not a good fit for what Rex Ryan wants from his corners: aggressive man coverage 70-80% of the time.

The kid has some size and athleticism, and I was impressed with how quickly he was able to grasp the scheme and contribute last year.

He kind of reminds me of a bigger Deshea Townsend.

Did anyone see anyone in the secondary look even close to good against the Saints. So soft coverage and having no clue where the ball is, The interceptions where really , hey here comes the ball right in your hands.
