Mike Tomlin and the "who would replace him" meme

And if he doesnt? What will be the reason then. Surely it wont be said that he might actually be ok..

Sure will be, if he does well and reverses his "TREND", I for one will ne happy and VERY supportive. Like I said earlier, I want Tomlin to succeed and weather Rooney or Cohwer hands in it isn't going to have a bearing on TOMLIN's outcome as a coach.

AND some here act as if Cohwer ABSOLUTELY did NOT want Ben. Contrary to some beliefs Cohwer was open to it but also looking at other possibilities, THAT"S WHY THERE WAS A CONVERSATION. OBVIOUSLY ROONEY has final say but don't think Bill Cohwer was ignorant enough to NOT think Ben would help his team. It's a MOOT point as to who did and who did not pull the trigger. That thin arguement is ONLY brought up in defense of Tomlin NOT achieving to the team's full potential, it's as though somehow that justifies the failure.

An easy comparison would be if Tomlin was sitting that high in the draft 2 or 3 years ago and a Blue Chip CB was there and people on this forum learned that he was considering another position or had to be steered to the CB some would want him fired for that

See, this is the issue. Cowher, essentially, was forced to take Ben. Doesn't Cowher bear some responsibility for having ****** QB's?

Sure. However, Cowher was extremely successful during his first 6 seasons with a mediocre QB (O'Donnell), and his team's success meant he did not have a shot at an elite QB. The team also won the AFC Central the 1st season without O'Donnell, so once again, no shot at a franchise QB.

The only real criticism I can have of Cowher in terms of drafting QB's is passing on Drew Brees in 2001. However, that was the draft where Cowher selected Casey Hampton in the 1st round and Kendrell Bell in the 2nd. He rebuilt the DL with the Hampton pick.

Hard to be too critical of Cowher because he passed on one elite QB, mainly because his teams were winning too much to qualify for selecting an elite QB - until 2004, when the team selected Roethlisberger.

And there is always Drew's height concerns coming out.

If Ben retires and Tomlin improves and the team continues to be a playoff contender then I will freely admit that I am wrong. But Tomlin will have to improve as a coach for that to happen without a franchise level quarterback. At this point in time Mike Tomlin is a mediocre coach with extremely talented players.

When Ben hangs them up, we will, more than likely, go through a period of below .500 years and won't be a true contender. A few teams have gotten lucky with good QB's but that is certainly not the norm. Franchise QB's don't come along every year and we will be drafting at the tail end of the draft. Since they took Dobbs last year, I don't know if they will even select a QB this year. It's supposed to be a deep draft for QB''s though but just as every other year, a ton of teams need QB's.

I haven't heard a single person here wanting tomlin fired for NOT picking a CB ?????? I have heard many hear wanting to fire him due to lack of coaching.

Extenuating circumstances Ark. Tomlin will see a lot of 6-10, 7-9 and 5-11 seasons once Ben is gone.

Missing one player he was forced to take...my point being that Ben can hardly be called a "Cowher" player which makes the "cowher' s team" the BS it has always been. Just like the excuse everyone wAnts to give for the 8-8 season.

O'Donnell, while not great, was the least intercepted qb in nfl history at the time he left the Steelers. So, not having to overcome short fields might have helped?

We were in a position to take Ben because of a 6-10 season....

Oh **** right off with that. Who oversaw Ben's early development as an NFL player? Cowher not Tomlin. The quarterback is more than just one player. The quarterback is the heart and soul of the offense.

I said if he had done that. Similar to the way most feel Cowher lack of a QB held him back. Alot feel Tomlin not finding a blue chip CB has held us back. Soooooo if there was a chance for one to be taken and Tomlin had to be talked into taking one there are some here who knock him for it.

A development Ben wanted no parts of. He hated the offense and ran Whisenhunt out of town. He wanted more freedom more passing.

I've been a member on this site and it's previous versions since 1999 or so. I know that I had dial up with AOL and a ****** Compaq computer. That said, I wasn't active on the board when Tomlin's "tripping" incident occurred. Could someone, everyone I don't care, give me the cliff notes version of THAT coaching wizardry??? What in the hell was up with that? Now I know that I'm old and I think that integrity is important and all, but I was embarrassed for the Steelers just watching the clip in the highlights. How did that play out here? Hmmm....

That clown had two ints too many.

Ba Blah Ba Blah Ba Blah.

I understand you have some sort of emotional investment in Tomlin and you are going to defend him no matter what. The fact still remains though that Tomlin did not prepare and did not game plan properly in two losses against teams we should have beaten the ******* brakes off of. Both were embarrassing but the Home loss and where we got butt ****** to the tune of only nine points to the Jags that took the teams dignity away. And both were down to Tomlin. if you can accept that fine, personally I expect the team to strive for more than mediocrity.

and Cowher would have been happy to have gone with Maddox for the rest of his career.

And of course you have no answer so you resort to nonsense. I dont care about Mike Tomlin. Im the only consistent one here. I never called for Cowher head after 6-10 seasons 5-11 seasons. My stance was the exact same same way. Now because you and others dont like the coach i must change. Bullshit. By the time those bad seasons had happened under Cowher he had already established himself to me. No one is perfect. So once a coach has established himself to me my focus is on the players. The guys I CAN SEE ******* up.

This team had a lot of holes to fill.. Keeping players too long and trying for another SB with those core players townsend, polamalu, farrier,, etc.. a lot of money pushed back on contracts.. we were upside down. The ship has been righted. We have a defensive backfield. We have a good O line,, etc.. the stars are aligned,, and we look like ****.

We all have known we needed a top CB but our record always seemed to put us out of reach for those top tier CB's, worthy of a first round pick.

please post a link as tot where cowher had to be talked into taking ben. Seriously.

If Cowher had a decent QB Before ben, who knows how my rings we would have had.

I don't blame Tomlin for not taking the top picks he has. Cept for uncle Jarvis. What I DO blame him for is taking ****** players that were head scratchers at the time of the pick. The long snapper. Landry Jones. Dri Archer. The other smurf from Florida... etc.

I posted two in this thread

B&G, there are many accounts of Dan Rooney steering the conversation in the draft room, back to Big Ben. Cowher liked Shawn Andrews. That guy ended up being out of the league with depression after a few seasons. If we went SA instead of BR, we wouldn't have seen a single superbowl, let alone our last 3.

Can we just get the Mike Tomlin vs the Chiefs version every week? Then we could all stop our bitching and rehashing ancient history that doesn't change a damn thing...

The fans are giving Andy Reid the Tomlin treatment out in KC, just killing him, especially for going for it on fourth down. Only Belicheat is immune from this. Mike McCarthy gets it in Green Bay as well.
