Players like Gay and Golden would not have been released if Steelers weren't in a very bad cap position.
Currently the 53 man roster is made up of many practice squad players. I believe 13 players off the
53 man roster we allowed to become free agents and currently we only signed 2 to replace the 13,
(Toussant and Bostic). The Steelers have approx 6 mil to sign 10 players. They basically can only
sign vet minumums and their draft picks. It will be the best year for all the draft picks to make the team.

They could still make some restructure moves, but they have few players with big signing bonuses and
players like Ben, Gilbert and Pouncey are in final two years of contract, when doing that doesn't help
as much as it use too and would make 2019 that much worse.

Same ol we can't sign anyone regurgitated crap.

sigh

Steelers will be 50-60 million under the cap next year with most of the core of the team still under contract. We could easily do restructures and free up another 10-15 million if needed this year and still have plenty of cap space to work with next season.

Don't let them shoot the messenger.

We are leaving 14.5 Million in cap space for Me'Von Bell for just one year even though he threatened to hold out and will not be tagged for the 3rd time.

Once he signs ( He should do so soon if he wants to be fair to the Steelers ) we'll have enough room to sign the rookies, and maybe 1-3 more bargain basement types.

IMO Ben and Gilbert are worth their contract. Pouncey won't see a lucrative 3rd contact, as centers tend to break down around that time.

The fact that Pouncey was adequately replaced by two guys unemployed in free agency shows you his value is a lot less than say Ben or Gilbert's. With Hubbard gone, Gilbert's agent is likely smiling. We wouldn't be able to pick up an unemployed free agent tackle to spell Gilbert if he were to go down.

This is not surprising. I have said from the beginning that I want Bell but tagging him is the worst possible scenario for the team this year (because of the situation with losing Shazier but not his large cap hit). The 2nd worst will be signing Bell long term to the $15+ million per year he wants.

There is no messenger to shoot..Currently there are 49 players on the roster that participated in games. There are only 4 spaces remaining for the 53 slots. Of the 53, under the "Rule 51", only the top 51 salaries count against the cap. So, don't jump off the bridge....FO knows what they are doing.

Coach, you wanted him traded, then released when he threatened to hold out. While a hold out was threatened, Bell reasserted himself by saying he will report after the 4th Preseason game (like last year). Now you saying like its your epiphany that he won't get a third tag. Nice Captain obvious, you've only be told this dozens of time from numerous folks on the board.

"Pouncey adequately replaced by two guys".....your bringing this BS up again?....Centers break down on their 3rd contract? You probably believe the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor too. Pouncey hasn't missed a game due to injury in 2 years, made the Pro-Bowl each of the last two years as well. He sat out the final game with the starters for the last two seasons. Pouncey could get a third contract so as to match Ben's years. Dirt Dawson played 12 years. We know about Webby, Non-Steelers? How about Olin Kruetz, Mawae, Randy Cross and Dierdorf to name a few......Your blabbering is getting old.

Can we PLEASE for the love of God QUIT calling it a holdout? He is not under contract, there is zero reason he should be anywhere.

There are no significant positives for the Steelers for Bell to sign his tag now versus the day after preseason game #4. You can keep saying that, but it isn't true. There could be significant advantage if he signs a long term contract that drops his cap hit to $10m-$11m. although, i dont know if another $3m is keeping them from signing someone.

Burns, Haden, Hilton, Sutton...there was no spot for Gay. They'd be better off with a young prospect at this point as the No. 5.

Golden isn't any good on defense. Solid special teams player, but they're in trouble if he's in the lineup. Again, time to move on.

SORRY ark steel but Bell isn't signing any long term deal for 10-11mil / year. MAYBE an 8year 11 mil / year, FULLY GUARANTEED then maybe. Technically, until he signs I don't think the STEELERS can pedal his @ss in a trade with out tampering possibilities. I'd take that chance and be on the phone 24/7. He is gone after this year.

hopefully everyone reads this and doesnt fall for the fake news of us signing players. we're so far into debt on the cap that we've got collection agencies calling us for payment.

now, if Bell would end his holdout, we can cut him. that might free up a buck or two.

everyone pass the collection hat.

Soup,.........it's not a laughing matter as I seen Belbowa"s kid dressed with that rediculous hat, come out of the facility carrying a small laundry bag..................the money holding kind.......!!?? I hear the STEELERS are moving the due date up on season ticket holders......... You've heard the O'l saying.."coaches are burning the midnight oil".....well our coaches are actually burning that oil in their whale oil lanterns at night as electricity gets shut off at 7:55pm and back on at 6:05 am.............. Reality

I dont think it impossible. A 5 year contract where you give him a big guaranteed amount and small amounts for annual salaries could keep the cap hit at $10m while giving him the guaranteed money he wants.

$40m signing bonus with $2m for the 1st 3 years and something different for the last two gives him, essentially, $42m now with $10m cap hits for the next 3 years.

You know your thread is in trouble when coach is the only one who likes it.:pound:

Those two players time was up and they were holding on by a string. Like anchor's weighing a boat down, preventing them from moving in the right direction. They were cut loose to strengthen the roster with youth and experience. Not hard for most to wrap their head around it.

Simply necessary.

IMO, we should cut Bell while he's in his holdout, then we can use that money to bring in other players.

They basically offered him that and he turned it down.

LOL. no we didn't.
we could have offered him a few coupons to Bettis' bar and grill, but that's it. we're too strapped to the cap to do anything else.

can't you ******* read, kryeao?

I'm sure Morgan Burnett and Jon Bostic will make some lucky team(s) very happy next season. Shame it won't be here. Would look good in b&g
