Case numbers are meaningless to me. But positive rate, hospitalizations and deaths are all going up in some places. Hospitals are nearing capacity in some places. That's not good, no matter how the data is being cooked.

I totally agree much has been overblown and politicized about the data through the course of this. It is being made to sound worse than it is in many ways. That doesn't mean there is nothing bad about it.

I don't see why people don't see a middle ground between "OMG PANIC WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE" and "It's a complete hoax being used to control us". What is wrong with "It's not life threatening for most people but why not slow down the spread with simple measures if we can so we don't run out of hospital space and PPE again and end up having to shut everything down." Is that really such a huge infringement on our rights?

I've ever seen so many people abandon all logic and reason like this, on both sides.

the media is lying by omission. They want you to assume that the rise in hospitalization is all Covid. Fact is, much of the increase is people going in for procedures that they had postponed due to lockdowns.

as for masks, if they had mandated that HIV positive people wear masks back in the day, the ACLU would have set a speed record to the courthouse. And rightly so.

There are 2 issues at play. 1. Are masks even effective? There is no evidence at all that they do anything. 2. How much authority do you grant executive branch (Prez, Governor, Mayor) to mandate behaviors under the guise of emergency or public health?

I think these people do NOT have this power, at least not for such a prolonged period. Executives are granted emergency powers, because it is accepted that a legislature is too slow to act in an emergency. But how long is something an emergency? Is there any reason why these measures can’t be voted on now? Only political reasons which are not valid reasons in terms of laws.

Try to loosen your thinking cap a little, it's screwed on too tightly. I know it's bad all over right now stateside, trust me, I get it. The reason I highlighted TX and FL was because Trump and FoxNews were literally drooling and gushing over how successful those R governors were, while lambasting the Dems on the east coast. The tide has turned, and now they look like the fools that they are. This is not a partisan issue, the virus is real and affects everyone. It seems it's gotten significantly worse in areas that eased restrictions too early, or where people simply scoffed at mitigation measures.

Thankfully the numbers have come down in places like NY & NJ, which was by far in the worst shape back in the spring. Those Dem gov's and mayors made plenty of mistakes, which resulted in significant loss of life. To see the dramatic rise in overall US numbers relative to the EU and other countries is sad and disappointing. In states like CA and Arizona, along with the southern states, this thing has been heading in the opposite direction as it should be. Really sad to see, across the board. Very disappointing, regardless of party politcs and whether it's a blue or red state. I hope the tide will turn soon, and the numbers start coming down again.

To sit here and ponder that Americans are barred from travelling to the EU, Mexico and Canada - and not the other way around - is simply stunning.

Health officials in Pima, a border county in Arizona that includes Tucson, told USA TODAY that they have watched their case numbers march up as stay-at-home orders relaxed. Total cases have climbed by 125% in the county since a statewide shutdown was lifted in mid-May.

“We get groups of more than 10 together, we open up businesses, we don’t wear masks and end up where we are,” said Pima County Public Health Director Dr. Theresa Cullen. “We don’t have to speculate that this is a rise in people coming across the border.”

Listen, as much as I know the data is being exaggerated and presented in the worst way possible, I also don't believe it's possible for the government to completely fake a surge of Covid hospitalizations and deaths. There are people on the ground who could easily come out and publicly dispute this. Why aren't they? Where are the doctors and nurses saying "They are lying to you, we don't actually have an increase in Covid hospitalizations!". Are they all in on it? My own brother in FL has two of his co-workers in a restaurant of maybe 50 employees hospitalized with Covid this week

If HIV was airborne and you consider the fact that initially virtually everyone who got it, died, I don't think most people would object to wearing them. Unsafe sex of course happened but knowingly infecting people became a crime if you recall. Ultimately though it was extremely difficult to get infected with HIV without willing participation in risky activities (short of rape I guess). I'm not necessarily for mask "mandates" as they inspire rebellion against them. I wish people would wear them voluntarily.

So much for public health.

What we see here is why liberals are so hell bent on controlling healthcare. Just look at how much control of people's lives they can take under the guise of it being for public health. In England, you have to get a permit to use a ladder higher than about 4 feet. You might fall and the public health would have to pay for your injury.

I am not upset with the concept of wearing a mask. I'm upset with the way it is being mandated. The law still applies. We can't set a precedent that the government can mandate behaviors simply by quoting a health risk.

What happens when they deem climate change a health risk and outlaw air conditioning? Of course there will be exemptions for donors. Al Gore's house will be 68 degrees when he's away on vacation. But your house will be 90 at night while you try to sleep.

We are going down a dangerous path in this country. We are becoming too accepting of laws being made by people other than legislatures. We have un-elected bureaucrats with the power to impose fines and shut down businesses. We have judges creating laws from the bench. We have executive orders.

It is now how it's supposed to work and it's dangerous. I just want the rules to be followed.

It's not unreasonable now to wear a mask and if it makes people feel better and will help the economy get going then I'm OK with it. But pass the ordinance through legislation.

I'm not sure what your point is in comparing this to HIV. There are about 38,000 people per year infected with HIV in the US annually.

There are 3 million confirmed cases of Covid in the span of 6 months. Estimates are that actual cases are 10 times that number. HIV is not something that is easy to contract just by walking around in public.

As I've said before, the problem with Covid is not how deadly it is, it appears to be slightly deadlier than the flu, and even less deadly than the flu in certain groups of people. The problem is how rapidly and efficiently it can spread, piling up lots of illness, hospitalization and death in very short periods of time.

SARS was very deadly, but partially because of how deadly it was, didn't spread easily. If you had SARS you generally weren't walking around in the population infecting people.

...and sadly, it looks like the 2nd wave will hit Europe fairly soon, if it hasn't already. Numbers are going back up again, and certain EU countries are contemplating re-installing travel bans, limiting bars and restaurants, etc. The big difference has been the sad fact the US never really managed its first wave, and as soon as cases started plateuing, there was a rush to re-open and get things back to normal. Add to that, the batshit crazy right-wingers, who've been off the reservation from day one regarding counter-covid measures. Here in Europe people just got it very early on - wearing masks, social distancing, adhering to covid regulations - that this wasn't some government take-over, or an infringement of individual rights, etc. The situation is bad enough without dipshit, wacked-out politicians talking out of their *****, mocking reporters wearing masks, deriding their own CDC officials, like we've seen with Trump and the GOP. The situation in states like Florida and Texas is mind-numbing, to say the least. The fact hospital emergency wards are at capacity, in the middle of July, is unbelievable. Yet that's exactly what happened, as so many mocked this pandemic, called it a hoax, a partisan ploy against Trump, refused to wear masks, had hissy fits when confronted, etc, etc. Not to speak of the medical concerns raised by researchers of long-term effects of covid, be it regarding heart issues, or how it attacks other organs, that can linger in patients a lot longer than originally believed. This has been, and continues to be, a very dangerous situation, for folks around the world, on both sides of the Atlantic. Godspeed to us all.
