Hong Kong adopted newly tightened social distancing measures Monday, as a sudden surge in infections prompts fears that the coronavirus is spreading undetected across the city.
Carrie Lam, the finance hub’s embattled chief executive,
said residents are now required to wear face masks in all indoor public spaces and instructed nonessential government employees to work from home.
While Hong Kong was struck early on by the pandemic, the city managed to stamp out most local transmissions by the end of last month. But with more than 100 new cases of the virus confirmed on Sunday, recent figures seem to threaten its success.
“I think the situation is really critical and there is no sign the situation is being brought under control,” Lam said Sunday,
according to Agence France-Presse.
More than 500 new infections have been reported over the past two weeks alone, totaling nearly one-third of all confirmed cases since the pandemic began.
Last week, Lam announced a score of newly tightened restrictions, shuttering bars, gyms and nightclubs, requiring masks on public transit, and closing restaurants at night for all but take out, AFP reported.
