Hong Kong  adopted newly tightened social distancing measures Monday, as a sudden  surge in infections prompts fears that the coronavirus is spreading  undetected across the city.
Carrie Lam, the finance hub’s embattled chief executive, 
said  residents are now required to wear face masks in all indoor public  spaces and instructed nonessential government employees to work from  home.
While  Hong Kong was struck early on by the pandemic, the city managed to  stamp out most local transmissions by the end of last month. But with  more than 100 new cases of the virus confirmed on Sunday, recent figures  seem to threaten its success.
“I think the situation is really critical and there is no sign the situation is being brought under control,” Lam said Sunday, 
according to Agence France-Presse.
More  than 500 new infections have been reported over the past two weeks  alone, totaling nearly one-third of all confirmed cases since the  pandemic began.
Last  week, Lam announced a score of newly tightened restrictions, shuttering  bars, gyms and nightclubs, requiring masks on public transit, and  closing restaurants at night for all but take out, AFP reported.
