Nobody knows what the total number of fatalities will be. The mortality rate continues to decline even as more and more cases are reported. The mortality rate in April and May was exceptionally high compared to what it is now. Be it better therapeutics, a better understanding of treatments, or a better understanding of who is actually most vulnerable to the virus, but we are not seeing the same degree of infection currently than what we did in the beginning. Even if 400K people do end up dead from the virus, it is a drop in the bucket compared to how many people dies from heart disease, cancer, preventable accidents, respiratory disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer's/dementia each and every year. Nobody is cheating death and the new "spike" in cases is occurring globally, so please do tell what government we should be modeling our response off of or what the magic solution is to stopping another virus, something that no country on Earth has figured out how to do with any previous virus.
