The Steelers finished in the middle the previous two years and just went 12-4. The best players on their roster outside of Ben over the years (Heyward, Watt, DeCastro) have been late first-round picks. They recently traded for top-10 draft talent (Bush and Fitzpatrick). I don’t agree with assessment that you have to tank to get talent.
The "having to suck for a few years to build up talent" notion has always been flawed.
The 1974 draft may be the ultimate counter to it.
It may be true in some sports, particularly basketball, but the average draft in the NFL is just so deep in talent.
Beyond the players you mentioned, Hines Ward, Alan Faneca and Troy Polamalu were drafted in the middle of the first round or later.
