T.J. Watt in jeopardy of missing Week 1

Me personally ...As I stated before I would just let him play his contract out and then tag him twice. Simple and cheaper. Gives us three years of his best service.

Is it TJ holding out, or is it coaching staff making the decision that he won’t play?

I highly doubt he’s sitting on a couch eating cheetos

Currently he is on what they are calling a "soft" hold out. He has been showing up and doing conditioning drills on the side and NOT participating in contact drill or play. Not sure what today will bring as to his participation.

I'd say soft or hard he is holding out as he is currently under 5th year option contract worth approximately 10.1 million for the season.

I just want the deal to get done so he can enjoy his "SUBWAY" samiches and make commercials with his hottie mom.

Well if the Steelers aren’t going to guarantee Watt money beyond the first year they certainly won’t with Minkah either so the Steelers in theory could have a boatload of first-round picks and be without their best two defensive players while needing a QB, OLB, and FS.
I'm much more inclined to sell the farm for Watt then Fitzpatrick. If he wants crazy cash trade him. His ability to change the course of a game from his position is infinitely less than Watt. Fitzpatrick goes in spurts of two or three games where he seems like just another guy. And let's remember something here. You are paying someone to play a position. So if you trade Fitzpatrick, you can use his money to pay someone else. Will they be as good. Likely no. but you might be able to get a midrange safety AND corner at his price.

LOL.....you mentioned trades don't work.

False. I actually said, "That sounds great and draft picks always seems to freaking awesome, but then I look at how the deal played out" and then simply listed how that trade played out.

Off the top of my head, I mentioned the Cowboys trade and you skipped mentioning it in your rebuttal.

How is the Herschel Walker trade in 1989 relevant in any way, shape or form to trading TJ Watt in 2021?

Answer: It isn't.

If we can't get Watt signed and a deal like Mack's is offered a few have said we would take it. No one is saying to trade Watt.

I don't think that will fly here. You will be maybe getting him to play out this season but then it will be tag and trade. The Watts have a good image in this league but JJ proved it this year. They are playing for money like everyone else. I just don't see how the word could be that the contract is imminent, but they could be more than a million out.

You mentioned the Pirates for trading away established, elite, top-level stars...If that I for trades...sorry. I miss-understood.

I mentioned the Cowboys trade in reference that trade can work nicely after you showed the end results in the Raiders haul for Mack. Maybe I misinterpreted how you meant it. I find it funny though that you mention the Pirates when trading elite talent and end result but the Cowboys are not relevant. Gotcha

Umm...Sorry. No one is saying to trade Watt as a first option.

Again....how did the Cowboys trade pan out? One player doesn't make the franchise....especially an OLBer.

Comparing apples to oranges. That trade was considered asinine back then and one like it would never happen again. Both clubs got negative publicity for it, although Jimmy was the shrewd one directing it. Walker was nowhere near the talent TJ is now. Nor will there will be 3 #1, 2s and 3s ever be involved in a trade again for one starter and a couple of role players. The financials doesn’t work. Plus it was before free agency and included a 12 round draft. Comparing it to a current MLB trade involving an all star player fir prospects.

A good edge LB can be countered in various ways as the Brown did in the playoffs. He can be double / triple teamed, run screens at his side, run to his side, quick passes etc etc. If the opposing team is ahead it is also much easier to negate the pass rush as they don't have to throw constantly. Watt is certainly a top defensive talent and should get paid, but there is a point where enough is enough and he needs to sign or its time to move on

New reports have TJ missing practice and saying DKs report as being false. Wonderful.

Meh. He brought up the return for Mack in a negative light. I mentioned what Dallas got in return for their trade. Maybe a red apple to a yellow apple. An orange is a stretch.

Butler needs to be replaced.
But then how will they fill their quota of corn poke quotes for the season? He is the perfect foil to Tomlins eloquent jibberjabber lol

Look I don’t really care if Tomlin or Butler calls the defense… it works and Butler is a great lb coach…

No practice today means definitely less than 50% of the snaps on Sunday. Miss another day and he doesn't play this week in my book. He needs contact this week to get any snaps in the game. Sucks but that's the reality. If he sits out the season, **** him. Tag him next year and if he holds out again, let him sit like Bell did and ruin his career as well.

I wonder how he goes about that? Did he go up to coach and tell him, I don't want to hit or be hit until I get a new contract... It would take everything I had not to tell him to GTFOH. :)

I doubt he holds out the entire season. If he doesn't he still has to play his 5th season.

6 words.

Come on TJ. Enough is enough,

I get it,.. but money corrupts. Didn't think you were that kind of guy,

Sign.

Your salary is already mind-boggling in my world...and you are risking turning a lot of us peons off. And we are the ones that pay.

I like watt he is a steeler but I feel the same about him as I do anyone else in his position, you were more than happy to sign your current contrat which stated you would play for five years so play for five years. no contract should be renegotiated until it is fulfilled.

CHAZ PALLA | TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt stretches during the first day of camp on July 22, 2021, at UPMC Sports Performance Complex on the South Side.

A contract extension for Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt is imminent.
On the verge of happening. Looming. Around the corner. On the way. On the cusp.
If we keep saying things like that, eventually it’s going to be correct, right?
Unless it isn’t.

I don't seeing money corrupting him. He is pretty much a stand up guy. It just is a difficult contract with what his value is. No shocker just would have preferred it to be in the rear view mirror by now. But don't think it will be a significant amount of time missed. I see no more than one game......

How much is enough money though? Greed is a *****. If he wants more $$$ than he can simply play out his contract and possibly a few Tags and go his own way.

For a change it’s been a relatively quiet offseason. It’s been nice. It sure would have been nice if both sides would have gotten their **** together and got this frigging well done. They’ve had enough time.

That is a worse case scenario, not sure it will come to that. But sure it is on the table if the Steelers feel enough is enough.

This is about a simple a contract as you could possibly imagine. Joey Bosa plus inflation. I'm almost certain the issue is Watt is asking the Steelers to change some landscapes of the way they do business with guarenteed money. And they don't move on that ****.

I WANT TJ WATT TO PLAY BUT ALSO NOT AT AN OVERVALUE AND COMMITMENT (sorry caps) that hurts us for years if injured or drops off in play. I also want us to retain him and the front office is masters at that. TJ wants us to take his word he will be of the contract value and the STEELERS are saying we give guaranteed money but you also have to earn the contract. LOOK at our track record with other players from our team.................. We honor contracts provided you play to the line.

This is a money post. It's a 4 year deal and there is literally no way other than a catastrophic injury that ends his career that the Steelers won't fully honor 3/4 of the deal. So in my mind the Steelers are guaranteeing somewhere around 60-75 million.
