T.J. Watt in jeopardy of missing Week 1

Question: what do you think the greater impact of this contract **** with other players will be? I mean, here you have 52 other players looking at Watt along the sideline
while under contract, basically holding out. Are the players all in his corner, or is this getting on their nerve and they are thinking, why is the coach not getting his *** on the field - he's under a ******* contract? Sorry, but I would be getting pissed that a guy can sit and do nothing and the coaches just shrug it off!
They probably support him. They understand the $$$ involved here. I don't agree with Watt while under contract not fully participating. Seems the Rooneys are though and they pay the bills.

I hope everything gets worked out soon, but if he misses games. . . ugh!
I don't get how most support Watt (while under contract) with him not fully participating and might end up holding out during the actual season. And vilify Bell for missing camp and then holding out while not under contract. Both held out for $$$$$$. One is seen one way and the other is seen the opposite. Maybe when the first week actually is here and if Watt isn't here people will have a change of opinion. Or not.

I love T.J.and the Rooney's. However, you still have to consider the entire roster. Give him 20-22 million a year for three years guaranteed and a 15 million dollar signing bonus. He is a special player but he is not a franchise Quarterback. That search has to be top priority starting next year.

Unless we're willing to change on guaranteed money, we're headed down the pathway of the Bengals and Raiders and the other poor($$$) teams. There's no way this negotiation should still be going on.

Sirius NFL Network with Bob Papa and Charlie Weis just said that Aditi changed her story this morning. Saying she was confident and comfortable last week the deal was very very close. Today she said is the guaranteed money is the problem. Steelers not guaranteeing after the 1st year which is par for their course, and TJ is looking for more guaranteed years.....

I trhink highly of Aditi as she is big enough to admit her claim has changed and thus reports what she knows is true at the time of the report. If she says it's the gauranteed money that's the sticking point then I'd lay odds it's correct.

Hard to change tried and true methods that have us (STEELERS) at the top of competivenes year in and year out. It wasn't to long ago (9-12 years im guessing) where we had the absolute worse OL but was cap strapped to high loaded contracts and couldn't do anything about it. I definately don't want to end up there ever again.

I want TJ but not willing to give up everything for him.

Bosa was 135. Watt shouldn't be more than 140.

This is MONEY post..........................:ROFLMAO:

You are exactly right in this that we should not over exceed the Bosa contract.

Aren't the Steelers reluctant to negotiate after the season begins?

Part of it is Watt has stayed quiet during all this and we were also being told what Bell was being offered. I think the players turned on Bell because he said he was going to report and play at a certain point then never did. I am personally not on Watts side. He will get more than enough $$ to live a rich lifestyle. Holding out over a couple mil or whatever just becomes pure greed. Depending what we do at QB and if we retain Minkah we could have a lot of $$ tied up at 3 positions. The Steelers will need every penny possible

Take up his option, give him two more tags, then part ways. Or sign him and trade him to an NFC team.

We need the big paycheck for a qb.

The issue is that stupid teams used to give out inflated contracts with loaded back end deals that were never meant to be honored… players used to be ok with it, they would get the glory for signing the biggest deal and then get to be UFAs when they could still earn money

These days players want that money assured or at least a lot of it… it’s coming to a head… eventually the cba will guarantee all contracts but the players probably will have to give up some points in the percentage they get to receive that… and it really will only benefit the stars

Not necessarily. In 1995 Darren Perry signed 17 days after the start of the season. So as long as negotiations started before the first game of the season, there's always a chance Watt could be signed after that day. I believe the Steelers policy is not to start negotiations after game one, but they can continue already ongoing negotiations.

If by reluctant you mean .....NEVER....then yes. They are reluctant. :) *EDIT*Expect for the Perry signing.

1. Watt had a major leg injury in college, correct?
2. Steelers just watched a physical specimen sit out a whole year with an ACL.
3. Watt is under contract, Bell wasn't.
4. Can Watt sit out a whole year, really?
5. Ben is first ballot HOF, did he ever get multiple year guaranteed money? Did he hold out? Is Watt more important to the team than Ben was in any year since 2004??

With all this said, only the Tombert and A3 can decide to set a guaranteed $$$ precedent or not. If they do, there's no going back. Bell wasn't worth doing it.

If TJ wasn't under contract, I might feel differently, but he is. Have to side with the FO on this one. Honor the contract, and play this year.
If the Steelers aren't offering what you want, you can pursue that after this season, which you agreed to play when signing the last contract.

If he doesn't, there is a cut off for what he can miss on this contract before it carries over to next year? I believe he can hold out all year, but still owe us year four.

Correct?

I believe if he sits out all this year, he is still on the hook for his 5th year of the contract he signed, so he will be back a square 1!

Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo....

He sits, he doesn't get paid? Signed a contract to play - able to play - doesn't want to = no $$$ ??

Also, in all of this, and sorry if I missed it if already mentioned, who is starting in his place???

Watt's current contract status is one year for $10,089,000. He is sticking it to the team because he didn't participate in any of the their preseason games. If and when he does hammer out a new deal, he'll be returning to the field in less than optimal football shape. Hanging around the facility is not honoring his contract.

I understand that it's a business, and TJ has the right to earn as much as he can. But how many more millions of dollars will make any significant difference in setting up his future? The Steelers want to make the guy one of the highest paid defensive players ever...I think a life of luxury for the Watt family is pretty much set.
Yea, missing those 3 drives in game 2 really screwed his conditioning...

He was at every practice and did every individual drill. No team drills, but was there for all of the mental reps. Didn't miss a meeting. This kid is a WATT. He's showing up on Sunday to wreck QBs!

Watt has Hall of Fame talent, you just don't let players like that leave. He's earned a top contract the Steelers are behind the rest of the league in how they structure them. They changed how they negotiated with QBs, they changed how they structured contracts with void years, they traded a first-round pick for a player. This contract needs to be the next step in the evolution of the front office.

Mental reps? I'm going to mentally practice my take offs and landings after not having flown since January. You coming with? ;)
