Official Free Agency Thread

Look, I’m not saying Rudolph is anything at all. But apparently the Steelers scheme and talent has failed everyone but RuRudolph.
Well, Arthur Smiths scheme, along with AJ Brown, King Henry and an OL did get Ryan Tannehill's wife's husband to a few wins back just a few years.......

When was he surrounded by the talent and scheme that Darnold had last year in a chance to start? Darnold’s play didn’t resemble Darnold last season until last season.

Guy didn’t blow it up with the Titans either. He also isn’t going to the Vikings present day so if he needs the Vikings scheme and talent to shine he won’t be getting that present day.

I can wishful think like the next fan. I just think we have seen Rudy’s best and it won’t be any better than that.

I would happy if proven wrong. Won’t be the first or last time. 😉

I don't get all the one year deals...

With younger players it is the way to comp picks if they break out and can’t be resigned

With older players it is a way to avoid dead money if they disappoint or fall off

All in all it’s a solid way to build depth when shopping at the scrap heap

But Rudy’s past best has been Tomlinship worthy
Aka “the standard”

It's also usually how a team that's actually competing for a championship add depth, not a team that just lost the 5 games of the season, and had glaring holes in several spots on the team. These one year deals, and players already choosing to go other places, is really going to turn players away more going forward.

Not sure the Steelers are in a position for free agents to accept more than a 1 year sentence, also known as the grace period while a player determines whether they are a hostage or volunteer.

Sans an overpay players aren’t wanting to sign up for 3 or years of whatever this is.

So Khan tries to do what he can with the pieces willing to sign on the dotted line.

It ain’t easy milkin’ a turkey

I can kind of understand it to a point, but at the same time it feels like we're missing something.

Free agency is always an overpaying process. Every year they say it's not the best crop of free agents, and that is true every year, because most of the time if you're a good or great player, you never make it to free agency. Sure they are a few cases of guys here and there, but the majority are deals like Christian Kirk got from the Jags a few years ago. Deals that just leave you scratching your head. I get not wanting to overpay, but what are we building here?

Unfortunately they’re not really building here Insaniti.

They just keep trying to glue and duct tape a broken model back together and hope they can use it another year.
At the going rate, it might take all three years of Tomlin's extension for him to get the wins required for him to be number one in steelers history. At which point, whoever follows him is going to have a GIANT mess to clean up. Might not even have a QB to build around lol

Steelers

Grade: C+

It’s hard to totally grade the Steelers’ free agency period because there’s a high chance they have yet to make their most notable move. It’s near the end of March and Pittsburgh is still courting potential starting QB Aaron Rodgers. If the Steelers reel him in, the vision the team is selling this offseason looks a lot more credible. Steelers HC Mike Tomlin cited a need to be more explosive and dangerous as a passing attack when he turned back to QB Russell Wilson last year, surprising many including colleagues inside the building. The huge swing for Metcalf makes a lot of sense in that context, even with the potential volatility from paying him big bucks and adding him to a receiver room that includes George Pickens in a contract year.

It makes far less sense if the person piloting that hopeful “explosive and dangerous” passing attack is Rudolph. Even with Rodgers, there will be major challenges getting all the pieces in Pittsburgh to fit together. Tomlin will be tested in ways he hasn’t in his long and winning career.

one and two year deals are now the norm in the league. It isn't just a Steelers thing.

C+ may be a bit generous from what the front office has done this offseason thus far.

But they have earned yet another A+ in drama. This franchise is becoming another Dallas Cowboys. Lots of talk, no results.

In a sense, I’d hope The new regime could pick their QBs and Sub-coaches.

Currently, we are going backwards in these over the hill 1yr wonders at QB. If they stick with Red Nose and a draft pick it would actually seem to me, they are attempting at building a future.

As it currently is, we are staying above water but the3 current is pulling us down stream.

I’d give them a sneaky B so far. The non moves of not overpaying Russ (A), Najee (B) and Moore (A+) were all the right moves to not make. Letting Fields slip away- can’t blame Khan, that’s all Mike (D).

They upgraded the secondary (Slay>Jackson and Thornhill equal to better than Kazee and Echols is a decent slot option)

The LBs are pretty much the same group trading out Roberts for Harrison- basically a wash at a deep group already.

The DL got rid of useless Larry O and replaced him with a guy with better potential imo. The draft pick or two will be telling to how much improved this unit will be.

Overall the D seems to be slightly upgraded already with picks to further fortify it.

They mishandled QB (I put that on Tomlin) but brought back Rudy A+ 🤣
That will go down to a C if Rodgers signed
Or down to a D if Russ signed

Let Najee walk- mid and replaceable as RBs are a dime a dozen. Gainwell is decent depth piece
Gotta figure another back added post cuts and likely drafted as well. Addition by subtraction???

The WR room is better-much improved already.

The TEs are basically the same swapping out Pruitt for Parham.

The OL they made the right move- nobody can justify paying Moore 4/82. Still need to add a piece or two here tho. Likely the same as RB, draft one and add one post cuts.

So offense took maybe a slight dip at QB, maybe an upgrade so far…but we all know another piece is coming. Other than that the skill positions are better already and will get another piece.

They have set themselves up nicely to go into a deep DL draft.

Adding the QB, RB, OL and DL the draft will bring and the team will be deeper and more explosive than last year.

Can’t think of any of the overpaid free agents I would consider “someone we definitely should’ve pursued”

Right now we have one QB with a 2 year deal. Going into the off season we had zero under contract.

We have Warren,Patterson and Gainwell all on one year contracts for this season.

We came into FA with Pickens entering his final year of his contract and then traded for Metcalf. Who we now have for 5 years.

Our FO/HC/Owner our clueless in how to build an offense. How do you let your self have these many holes on offense. Leaving the cupboard so bare?

You allow your megalomaniac head coach who's obsessed with defense help guide things.

Exactly what drama have they had this offseason?

Tomlin believes our defense is the elite of the elites of the league.
