Why is Robinson still on the roster? They say he is a good blocker, but for $11 mill you keep a guy on the payroll because he can block as a WR? No way. 34 catches, 280 yards, zero TDs for $11 mill?

No wonder we are still flirting with cap problems if we run the team like this and pay a soon-to-be 35-year-old DT $22 mill. Wake up, Kahn. This dog will not hunt.

Free agency is still a bit away.

Robinson can be cut anytime up to the start of the season and will clear the same money. There is absolutely no need to rush a decision. Free agency is two weeks away , they dont need to clear space to get back under.

And there is about a zero percent chance they are cutting Heyward...
you dont aimlessly create holes you dont need to yet. My guess is tgey need 10 million to sign draft picks so robinson either gets reworked or cut closer to then unless they need the space for a priority free agent... and honestly I dont expect a top end guy signing here this offseason... it will be second tier guys probably

This is partially why they will stay mediocre if this is the approach they take.

You have QB, CB,C, and RT that needs upgrading. You have to upgrade at least 3 out of the 4 to put your team in a position to be anything notable. If not all 4. You don't achieve that with a bandaid approach. Perhaps the draft can solve 2 out of the 4 problems. They need to be aggressive and solve 2 of the problems early with clear upgrades. I think the OP wants a sense of urgency as a result.

I have to say I want that as well. The team knows they need to get better and aren't anywhere close where they need to be. No better time than the present to start chipping away at the rock.

Thanks for interpreting me to the rest, Slash. I am/was searching for a sense of urgency. I understand that they have no reason "to rush" into cutting Robinson for purposes of cap, etc. I understand there is no impending deadline right now. But....really? If there was EVER a team needing "sent a message" that 2024 is a new year, with a new attitude," this is it. I don't care how "nice" Robinson is, or how much a "willing blocker" he is; he is on schedule to make $11 mill with his 34 grabs for 280 yards and zero TDs.

Do we really need to "play footsie" on this one? I wouldn't even consider him as the starting slot WR for league minimum with that production. And I blabbed loud and often that I had no confidence he had anything left before we ever signed him, with TWO declining years in a row and turning 30. He was clearly a player in steep decline but the Steelers didn't see that, for whatever reason.

2019 (98 grabs, 1147 yards), 2020 (102, 1250) was Allen's heyday. But look what's happened since: next 3 years averaged 33 receptions, for 343 yards). I'd say 3 years was a long enough period to call it a trend. His days of 100 grabs for over 1,000 yards are over. And if Pgh KNOWS they aren't "staying pat" with AR (and I pray they aren't) then cut him and allow him to pursue another contract elsewhere. Wipe that $11 mill off our cap # (or whatever it will take off).

Funny thing. IIRC, Khan took basically this same approach last year. Waited, waited, waited .... then restructures, etc. right before FA and BOOM (Well, a bigger BOOM than has been seen for this team in awhile). Based on what he accomplished last year, I'm will to give "The Khan Artist" a little slack and wait to see what his plan for this year is. It's not like FA starts tomorrow and, if you release Robinson now, who is your #3 WR? Calvin Austin? Blocking? Naw

As bad as Allen's stats were, it might as well be Austin, I'd take that chance that he'd be able to do better than 34 recpts. and no TDs. But I get your point on Kahn. If our draft equals last year, we will be in good shape. FA? So so. Picked up some ILBs, Ss, a few OL parts. We could do better.

I’m presuming a mutual contract renegotiation is on the horizon. I don’t think the market is going to be big for AR2 which favors Kahn.

I just don't see what AR adds to the team, even at minimum salary. Look at his #s the last 3 years. You mean even a rookie couldn't add more to the team?

Perhaps Smith mentioned something as he likes blocking WRs. For me I think he is just taking up space for more important things like moving the ball down the field.

Draft a third WR blocking capable and send him packing.

It's actually almost $12 million (11.9175), but who's counting? The Steelers would save exactly $10 mill if Robinson is cut, with 1,917,500 in dead cap.

Perhaps they're trying to bring him back at a much smaller number. He only made a little more than $3 million last season...there's simply no way the Steelers are going to quadruple that.

We’re getting 2nd tier guys!!!
Holy **** we’re Steeler rich!!!!

Beats circling the dumpster and recycle bins everyone else is done with and hoping we score something that can last a season

What are they waiting for!!! Why haven't they drafted anybody yet?!?!

Oh yeah, the draft is in...April.

Just silly.

So, you’re saying our Midget can’t block……..

Might as well grab him by the wrist and ankles and toss him over the heap for TDs !!!

has the smell of them negotiating an extended deal with a reduced cap hit and kicking some money down the road, which is classic Steeler fashion

I'd expect that 2-3 year extension coming soon as long as they search for that middle ground both sides are content with, if they can't find that middle ground ya simply cut him when you need the cash for a replacement part...it doesn't take too long to pink slip him if need be

There is a date where you pay part of the salary and another where you pay all. Neither has come up yet.

I think after June 1st it is split in two, there is also an early designation June 1st cut. That designated June 1 st cut allows that player and other teams to have a chance, instead of waiting.

Lets hurry up and do not much.

All I know is whatever Chuks said must have really ticked off Shades badly. Chuks isn't really worth his salary, but compared to what Robinson's ready to make and compared to his performance, Chuks a steal yet he was cut almost ASAP, in comparison. Chuks was not a great player; most of us thought it was a poor decision to give him the contract they did to begin with.

But paying an OT around $10 mill a year is not outrageous, even a slightly below average one, which is where I think Chuks is, slightly below average. He's not a total sh-- show like Moore (who is consistently ranked near dead last of every OT ranking there is). And paying Robinson anywhere near the $11 mill he's scheduled to make in 2024 is totally mind numbing - 34 receptions for 280 yards, zero TDs. In comparison Chuks' deal is nowhere near as obscene and out-of-this-world. This really highlights what you can get away with if your Shades' buddy: We had an OC who was the worst in the NFL and almost hung on for THREE years for cripes sake. We had a punter - who was buddies with Shades - who kept his roster spot year after year, shank after shank.

This is what you reap when you make decisions on how much you are "buddies" with players and coaches. Can you imagine Chuck Noll making personnel decisions based on how much he was buddies with them?

I agree on Calvin. He will get thrown like a rag doll. He's built for speed.

Chuck Noll was not "buddies" with them...whatever the hell that means, but he was loyal. A reason, not the only reason, but a reason the Steelers of the '80s struggled was because Noll had a hard time letting some of the players he had so much success with go. An example of that was in '79 they drafted a defensive lineman by the name of Dwaine Board in the 5th round, who ended up having 61 sacks over his career and was a part of 3 Super Bowl championship teams with the 49ers. But due to his loyalty to guys who had won for him, he let Dwaine Board go. Who can blame him? With what those guys achieved, they had a right to go out on their terms. But know what the hell you are talking about before you spout off.

Also, besides the drug rumors, loyalty to Bradshaw may have been a factor in not drafting Dan Marino in '83.

I think they knew chucs was not going to be a part of the 2024 Steelers so they cut him early.
Robinson is probs going to negotiate a different contract or be cut. no hurry with this. he has been on the Steelers less than a year so do not know how he a "buddie" with players and coach.
