Invariably, the Steelers FO will do some - if not all - of the following:

- draft at least 2-3 players a round or two earlier than any of us have seen in rankings or in mock drafts. Each year I have to remind myself the Steelers have their very own big board (gasp) that may look significantly different that what we've been pouring over for months now at espn, walterfootball, ourlads, and the like. This will cause a lot of bellyaching with immediate cries that we reached for so-and-so, we could have picked that guy in a later round.
- draft players - regardless of position - that are a few inches shorter and 10-15 pounds lighter than what we (think we) prefer. The Steelers seemingly barely glance at height/weight numbers, and focus on talent and production. Most fans meanwhile spend endless hours dreaming of 6-1+ CB's, 6-3, 250ish linebackers, 6-4 WR's, 300+ pound linemen and the like. This will result in instant letdown when a smaller (than ideal) player is drafted, as it bursts our bubble we envisioned of the type of athletes (we think) we're looking for.
- draft players with slower 40 times than what's pegged as desirable. As long as the production is there, or some other distinguishable trait, the Steelers rarely draft players that are on top of the speed/workout rankings.
- draft a couple of guys that we've never (or just barely ever) heard of, guys that have not shown up on Steeler fan sites as possible options, players they seemingly picked out of the blue. And we will protest loudly. Why on earth would they pick this no-name guy when a player at that same position (that we're familiar with) is still sitting on the board? This will hurt our feelings, and we will be letdown by said, barely known player.
- draft a few guys in the later rounds that are currently pegged as UDFA in the pre-draft rankings. Happens every year.

Then, when all the dust settles, we'll do some homework on the draft class, get to know their stories, and like magic, most of us will start feeling warm & fuzzy about the rooks as we welcome them on board. All the anxiety and letdown from the draft will slowly evaporate, and the pieces of the puzzle will begin to come together (in our minds) of what a great fit the rookies will be. This will last through Latrobe and pre-season, with the added excitement of the UDFA guys that have a shot to make the team.

I love seeing how each year's squad gets built and how it all comes together by September. It draws me in each and every year, and helps hit the re-set button on a ******, 8-8, non-playoff season.

Go Steelers!

Great post. Lmao. Very true. You left out the ones who will hate a pick and player no matter what until the end of time.

Great post and I must add there will be someone with a questionable medical history or off the field issues or his head will be too big and that makes up a lot of his height. The only thing I do not want to see is all of the draft picks not on the team in 4 years, that means they really screwed the pooch with the draft as we have a confirmed 8-8 team now.

Great post Tibs, and Wingman has a very good point too!!! It is like a reset button, now watch the team develope.

Salute the nation

I also like the 7th rounders that after mini camp are practically on their way to Canton only to barely make it to the practice squad.

I'm going in to this one with very low expectations. This will hopefully make it hard for MT & KC to disappoint me, ...but I'm sure they'll do their best.

Some Nationers will insist on a player's amazing, untapped potential for years of riding the bench. Until he's cut. The whole time, they'll make it clear to us who the REAL Steeler fans are, and that anyone who notices their shittiness secretly hates the Steelers.

******* gonna *****

A couple of things that will happen in this draft...........................

-Jake Matthews & Anthony Barr will drop!
-The Steelers will draft two CB's
-Ross Cockrell will be one of the CB's, the Steelers will draft.
-Carl Bradford or Jordan Zumwalt will be drafted by the Steelers. To become the next Buck ILB.
-Roger Goodell will be booed by the crowd.
-The Steelers will also draft two WR's.

That's all I got.

.

Tibs,

I had to laugh out loud... I have been there!

Manifesto,

Agree 100%... the only concern is that Zumwalt did not bench... not at the Combine or his Pro Day. Unless there is an injury that I have not heard of, that concerns me. UCLA players aren't known for there strength numbers anyway... but to skip it entirely?

.

Great post! I do think, though, that this draft is very important. If they screw this one up, I think we end up with no more SB's with our franchise QB. If they get it right and a few of our young guys start to produce, we could easily see two more SB's with Ben. We have to enjoy these years and get the most out of them. Teams typically don't go from one franchise QB to another. I do not want to go back to the 80's and 90's when anyone of us could have done better than our starting QB without, at least, winning one more SB.

Going on record as saying Scott Chricton will be our 2nd round choice.
Pure Steeler at a position of need.

I love Crichton but there's no 3-4 fit there. Way too small (269) for the 5 and not an ideal 'backer. Still, I don't doubt he'll have a fine career, and if our FO sees something in him as an OLB then I won't bat an eye if we take him.

You forgot the last step.

Sure we start feeling warm and fuzzy when we look up our guys

But then once they do nothing through the majority of their rookie contracts, if they even make it that far, then we go right back to feeling entitled that we should have selected, say, Sean Lee for instance..

Just say it, "I loce Uncle Jarvis";)

Another one -- not necessarily the 1st round pick, but if history is a guide, there will be a collective gasp of "WTF" that reverberates through Steeler Nation when our 2nd round pick is announced. That seems to always be the head scratcher round for them...and us.

Reading through this thread, I can see my prophecy already coming true.

Maybe everyone who ******* about drafting Pouncey and all his injuries should check how many games Lee has missed.

Why? Maybe those that don't ***** about Pouncey should look at Pouncey's injuries?

Somebody tell everyone that don't ***** about pouncy that he should tell everyone who ******* about pouncy that pouncy's injuries seem to have been team induced on his lower body that the most hardcore badass... like Bleeder couldn't even withstand. Then tell him to direct his answer to everyone who don't ***** about pouncy.

If we had drafted Sean Lee people would be bitching that we should have drafted Worilds instead since Lee is always injured. There's no winning.
