They put the wrong tag on Bell to begin with. Failing to assess the situation correctly. As if you are a difficult sign one year damn sure possible with his tarded history he is going to be a difficult sign again.
True Slash, they did. But you understood the rationale at that time? Based on Bell’s disposition at that time, “they were real close”, “I really think we will get it done.” So it was implied discussions were going very well. Placing the Exclusive on Bell implied good faith that hey we are going to offer a contract commiserate with what we are discussing. Basically protecting their investment. Then, Bell started listening to OBJ and the talking heads and moved towards to the mindset of 17 mil/ year, and pay at #1 RB & #2 WR numbers. He changed his stance after the tag was issued. No doubt, if they knew then what would happen later they would have given him the non exclusive tag obviously. They were going to make him the highest paid RB (albeit for maybe a few weeks until Gurley got his). What else could they have done? I think they called Bell’s bluff and Bell bolted.
