Benton’s Talents Wasted by Tomlin

Mike Tomlin on Najee “he was the target all along”

Mike Tomlin on Pickett “We got our guy”

Google it if you don’t believe me, I’m not going to bother posting the links because we both know he said it
Oh, I absolutely agree. No argument on that. I just find it hard to believe that he is the "end all be all" for every choice...

He’s not the end all be all for every guy

He definitely has a lot of weight in his convictions for early picks, that has been documented

It also has been documented that he throws coordinators a bone and lets them grab one of their guys later in the draft, they get to have the occasional scrap after he’s had his fill first.

A 6th round guy like AB was not a Tomlin pick, well documented that was a BA selection.

So while he isn’t the “be all end all” on all
Picks he definitely is a primary voice on day 1 and day 2 picks. I’m sure Art Nutting has some say too like when he said to fix the run game and they picked Najee (instead of fixing the run game by building an OL- the proper way to do the fixing)

I’d bet Colbert and now Khan also have some input. This seems pretty obvious given the change of direction of types of players drafted from the Tombert drafts to the Khan/Weidl drafts.

I’m sure there are multiple voices of the higher ups, thus the quotes like “we got our guy”
This implies multiple people agreed on “the guy”
This is what likely happened with the bust KFP.

Would love to be a fly on the wall though and see exactly how much input everyone gets.

The Khan/Weidl drafts seem to focusing on OL/DL, but that's because they keep drafting bums or guys that don't pan out. Look at our drafts from 09-12, or the tombert drafts. We drafted DL and OL first 2 picks of 09, 10 first round OL, 11 DL and OL first two picks, 12 OL first two picks. The difference is we drafted Heyward, Pouncey, DeCastro, Gilbert in those drafts, good players so they didn't need to concentrate on those positions the next several drafts, so they didn't really go a different direction in the draft under Kahn/Weidel like everyone seems to think, they just can't hit on any draft picks.

As for who has final say, Tomlin interviewed the GM candidates when Colbert retired, (how many coaches interview the GM?) if anyone doesn't think Tomlin has the most say, well I have some ocean front property in Nebraska I'd like to sell you for cheap.

I think the more general point here is that only one person in the Steeler organization is involved all phases of the infield product, including drafting. When the results are the same for over a decade, regardless of talent or coordinators or even GM, it's clear who the problem is.

You know, in that last PO win against the bungles, somehow Peezy got himself on the field near the end and had such a dramatic effect on the win. Without that situational awareness/genius and the total selfishness of Pac-Man, the Steeler drought would be even longer. So they fired Peezy.

Definitely agree that it is primarily Tomlin.

That’s just an opinion based on the past and what we’ve seen, but one I firmly believe.

Having a coach interview/hire the GM shows just how lazy Art Nutting is and how happy he is with Tomlin and his decision making.

Hopefully Dan takes over sooner than later and is a better steward of a once proud franchise
