Dupree to IR.... wtf?

That's it? Can they bring him back at some point? Holy cow, was not expecting this.

Roster moves continue, Dupree on IR
http://www.steelers.com/news/transa...ee-on-IR/82b5206a-c85c-482c-8af7-ceb8d8bb1474

LB Bud Dupree was placed on the reserve/injured list and LB Steven Johnson was signed.

Steelers’ linebacker Bud Dupree was placed on the reserve/injured list on Sunday. Dupree has not played during the preseason.

Dupree, the team’s No. 1 draft pick in 2015, played in all 16 games last season, starting five of them. Dupree finished the season with 26 tackles, 17 of them solo stops.

Dupree had an immediate impact last season, recording a sack of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in his first game. The following week against the 49ers he became the first Steelers’ rookie to have sacks in back-to-back games since 2007.

The team signed linebacker Steven Johnson to take Dupree’s spot on the roster. Johnson signed with the Steelers as an unrestricted free agent this offseason from the Tennessee Titans, and was released on Saturday when the team had to get down to the mandatory 53-man roster.

Johnson was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Denver Broncos in 2012, and spent his first three seasons with the Broncos. He played in 57 games during his career with a total of seven starts, and has played in five postseason games with one start.

Bud Dupree - LB - Steelers

Steelers placed OLB Bud Dupree (groin) on injured reserve.
A 2015 first-rounder, Dupree missed most of camp with a groin injury. The fact the Steelers waited until after final cuts to make the transaction suggests they expect him back at some point this season. He is first eligible to return Week 9.

Mods - feel free to merge these Dupree IR threads, we got a few of 'em...

Can you carry two on the injured reserve designated to return There is Golson, Dupree, Green all looking long term If I was picking it would be Green and Dupree

I believe it's just one that can be designated to return. Green is on PUP, so he's a bit different, and they haven't IR'd Golson (yet) so for the time being Dupree would be the one they could bring back. Maybe they'll just keep Golson on the active roster and not dress him for games. Could get tricky if there are more injuries as the season wears on...

Golson will be and should be put on IR for the year. Green being on PUP is interesting. Not sure on the rules for him but if Dupree is now designated to return and they only get one designee, they may be about to cut Green like many said they should.

yep just one is allowed.

I find it hard to believe Steelers would just leave Golson on the roster, inactive game day list.

I think it is not a matter of if but when he gets sent to IR..

I think it is getting very fair to be critical of the Steelers medical staff. This injury likely was worsened by him coming back early or if it was the same he should have been operated on weeks ago with a quicker ready to prepare date.

You don't have to designate anyone to come back. You're allowed to bring one of them back though. So they can wait if they decide to IR Golson.

But it appears to me that they may be keeping Golson on the 53. Maybe they think he's gonna be back in 6 weeks.. who knows.

We seem to have an inordinate amount of mysterious injuries this year. It's like nobody knows what is going on and nobody is talking and then boom....IR.

I think that Golson is the more important player in the defensive scheme right now. Durpee is a big time lose but at least we have Moats and even some youngins ready to somewhat cover for him. We lack depth at slot corner and need to pull Gay inside for pass packages. Golson was the answer in camp and seein' as we have 6 inactives every week anyway....why not carry him ?

This new guy from the stains can't tackle, **** can't tackle. Burns is rumored to be not much better ( yet ? )and we are currently using a safety to fill the void, so we are going to need Golson sooner than later...especially if we ( shudder) get anyone else dinged up.

Some background from BTSC:

Bud Dupree surgery for sports hernia prompted Steelers to place him on injured reserve
http://www.behindthesteelcurtain.co...-sports-hernia-prompted-steelers-to-place-him

The Pittsburgh Steelers surprised fans when they placed Bud Dupree on the injured reserve list. Turns out, the second year OLB had to have surgery to repair an injured groin.

There comes a point when the rehabilitation simply isn't working as planned. When the weeks taken off simply aren't getting the injury back to where it needs to be to perform at a high level. It is at this point when most turn to surgery to see if that would be a faster option than waiting out the injury.

As it turns out, this is exactly what happened with Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Bud Dupree which led to the team placing him on the injured reserve list.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Bud Dupree's surgery to repair his abdominal/groin injury took place last week.</p>— Ray Fittipaldo (@rayfitt1) <a href="https://twitter.com/rayfitt1/status/772540725267488768">September 4, 2016</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Dupree had been nursing an injured groin for the majority of training camp, and the entire preseason, but it finally got to the point where surgery was the best course of action moving forward. After his sports hernia was surgically repaired, the Steelers knew injured reserve was the only option for them as the regular season was rapidly approaching.

Dupree was not a candidate for the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list because he practiced this year while at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA. Dupree being placed on IR means he will have to sit out 6 weeks before returning to practice, and another two weeks before he can be placed on the active roster.

The Steelers will now lean on Arthur Moats, Anthony Chickillo and possibly Jarvis Jones to anchor the left side of the defense until the time comes for Dupree to join his teammates on the field.

Pittsburgh opens their 2016 season on the road against Washington as the first part of a Monday Night Football double-header.

Why do people think Golson was even going to play this year after his injury? He hasn't been in a preseason game and hasn't practiced in 2 years. To think he would come back from an injury in 6 weeks, start practicing and jump on the field is just crazy. Ain't happening unless everyone else got injured. Golson to IR is a no brainer.

Now, to the important issue, Green and PUP. He was on PUP in the preseason. Anyone know how that works going into the regular season? Do they put him on the active roster? IR him? Cut him?

Golson is 4 weeks away before knowing his return timetable.

Now that I see Dupree had surgery, sports hernias are quick to come back from. In 3-6 weeks he'll be mobile and working his way back in drills. I strongly believe he will be ready at week 6 to return to practice and he will play week 9. As long as there are no complications or setbacks, his timetable is pretty easy to predict.
