Cam Heyward

I not really sure that the HC won’t get that final nod on the players, doesn’t who he ultimately wants on his roster building tied to his success or lack there of?
Despite what many think I don’t believe Tomlin ever had final say in roster building. He had a lot of say but ultimately I think the GM had final say and will particularly with a younger new head coach. This isn’t to say they are left out and aren’t integral to the decision making but not the absolute final word. In reality that is Rooney if he chooses to wield the power.

No way Omar had final say over Tomlin, Omar was never a football guy, he's a numbers guy.

I disagree. The Rooney's follow the chain of command. I can't see any scenario where they wouldn't give Omar the final approval of moves if they gave him the position. That doesn't mean he and Tomlin were not in agreement, but Omar made the final call.

If I could use Watt to move up in the draft to number 1 with adding picks, I wouldn’t blink.

If I could get a good return for him I wouldn’t blink.

Otherwise I am not depleting talent just for the sake of.

Cam I would just redo his contract or tell him to shut up and retire.
Not sure how tradable what is now. Older, 32M guaranteed next year, and he really has not been the same on the field.

Cam was a winey little ***** this past year, but he performed at a high level.
He deserves the right to be a one helmet guy of he wants that, and he deserves to be traded f that's what he wants
When it comes to Cam and everyone else on the roster, the Steelers need to do what's best for the team. If Cam wants traded but the new HC wants him on the roster, Cam needs to be on the roster next season.

I mean that debate was settled in the Donahoe/ Cowher war... Coaches dont have absolute say, but they have a ton of imput on whom is drafted or signed

Agreed to a sense. If he wants to go , as a HC I would notnwant him here.
But might as well get something for him

After years of players whining and getting their way because "we want volunteers, not hostages" I hope that changes. Not enough value in those moves to better the team, too often favored the players.

I think the new coach will have less say on player than the exiting tomlin did, but also more say on players than many here believe.

EDIT: Also I think the tomlin egotisticaled himself into thinking he could evaluate talent better than he actually could, thus causing some lower talent picks at higher round pay. He over-valued his talent observation over the scout teams evaluation, eh didn’t trust their jobs.

Fully agree, if we move him by his desire……… we have to get his value in return.

Possibly 4th or a 5th, more likely a 5th or a 6th.

I mean he is pushing 37... a fair amount of top end DTs played till 35 or 36... 37 or higher is extremely rare

I get he just made an all pro, and that players are all individually physically gifted, but every year past standard age caps for a position is a huge gamble...
Don’t forget the one thing in Hayward‘s favor as far as his ability to stay physically capable, is that he played very sparingly his first three years in the league

Then you don’t believe the reports as by all accounts he was the man the main honcho the numero uno.

No, I believe the many reports directly from those close to the actual team that said the GM made the final calls. Again, Tomlin had a lot of say but no I don't believe for a second he had the final say.

Not what I heard at all will have to agree to disagree here..

Who had the last say then over Tomlin? Omar?

Tomlin made his final opinion known on draft picks and Omar made the ultimate call. I am sure it was usually pretty collaborative by the time the draft arrived. For free agents Kahn was the man making the deals. For final roster decisions after camp that is almost all on Tomlin. Pretty much that is the description of the process from insiders. The only real question is how much influence Art had in the process if any.

Wow. Really? OK. Where do you get this info from?

It was Mike’s D scheme , Mikes O approach, Mike lobbied for free agents. Mike’s final nod . This man was the head coach they didn’t roadblock him from his wants. He is the man responsible for our playoff drought. Many many reports that collaborated that it was a collective approach but he had the final word. As it should be, the coach is in charge of guiding the ship.

Furthermore it doesn’t pass the common sense guideline for it to be otherwise.

Also well documented that this team had a total turnover but one thing remained Mike. Yet we had almost identical outcomes.

Veteran Steelers beat writer Ed Bouchette has repeatedly stated that Tomlin had the final say on personnel matters, including roster decisions and coaching staff choices.

Bouchette (Feb 2025) was very direct:

Tomlin is “deeply involved” and gets who he wants — that’s the way it is.

Former Steelers beat writer Ed Bouchette has been very explicit that:

  • “Every [Steelers] coach has the final say” on personnel, going all the way back to Chuck Noll through Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin.
  • Steelers don’t bring in players Tomlin doesn’t want, meaning Tomlin is deciding who they sign, draft, cut, etc.

That quote is frequently shared on podcasts and steelers-focused sites — and Bouchette stressed this authority doesn’t really change no matter the GM

This is where I always thought we leaned....especially when Omar was elevated to GM. Could be either or I suppose.
