Can anybody offer an explanation for the absolute refusal to pass over the middle of the field?

Ben threw over the middle. The lack of completed middle passes started in 2022 with Mitch. And I can show you routes and open guys over the middle every game. So you can't just blame Canada. Most passes are outside the middle hash marks in the NFL.
It started with Ben. One of the thoughts was Pickett would help open up the middle of the field because he was the best QB in college football using this area of the field his senior season at Pitt.

What someone really needs to do is take a total per year of MOF throws for each year, tgen compare them to total pass % and further break down what % of MOF throws are in the final 4 minutes of each half.. that will show how the past few qbs have used the middle of the field and quantify the difference in those throws between the non essential drives and the critical drives.

Best explanation I have seen thus far.

And W42, know what makes Southern fire ants REALLY pissed off? The cold in Western Pennsylvania. God bless Matt Canada. Canada the country should change its name to MattCanada.
We are offering up a trade of Justin Castro for Matt Canada.
Straight up.

Ok, we will throw in a pizza and a 24.

So you’re saying Matt Canada offense is a fit for Canadian Football League???
Hmmm

Wonder if any of those guys up there would be willing to trade some Canadian bacon for Matt?
No chance

Just stated in the Packer thread that we ran a deep drag cross concept with GP and Austin to ice the game on 3rd and long. It would have been a kneel down and the O won the game without Austin hitting a defender for OPI.

Plus I'm not going to ***** too much about route concepts when we dominated the LOS on O with 200+ yds rushing for the first time in 6 years. It's all about perspective for me. Finally won TOP the first time this season and the rushing game is starting to look like a strength. Let's see if we can continue this momentum against the Browns this week!
Your cup is half full!

I just fact checked...The Steelers since 2007 have the League second best winning percentage of 6o% in one score games, only Bellichicks Patriots were better...

Only ONE TEAM has been better for 16 years...
SBs count.

The rest is participation trophy bs.

We're NOT TALKING about that...It's just a terrible argument....That was my point and now you go off point with SB bs....A point was brought up and i refuted it, and then you bring up SB's when that has nothing to do with the topic...Proving my point that nothing is ever good enough...

Easy SteveO SBs are always relevant when talking wins. That is why they play the game. Wins are liked especially by me. But I always want more than sitting at home watching the playoffs without the Steelers or a massacre 1 and done. This is like talking spaghetti and leaving out the sauce. Just an integral part of the recipe.

Anywho Steelers depot just had an article on 3 and 1 step drops. Showing the 1 step drops as being the safest but ironically what the Steelers are horrible at. The more difficult pressure inducing 3 step they are at least average.

Yet just another article that leans towards scheme as being the Steelers bugaboo.

I vehemently disagree. Now saying he is told to protect the football and be efficient I agree with. But when there is a play downfield or in the middle he has been VERY inconsistent. Now I don't like this vanilla play not to lose offense. I hate it. But watching Pickett's inconsistencies I think the problem is two fold. 1. We have a basic offense and are scared to push the ball down the field. 2. We have a QB who is very up and down in accuracy and is late reading the defense and knowing where to go with the ball. If they set Kenny loose in the Chiefs or Phins offense he would throw multiple picks a game. Probably more touchdowns but his TD to INT ratio would be worse. If you look at the post below you will see Kenny miss a wide open Pickens on a crossing route and a wide open CA3 on a go in the middle. Then you will see him throw a dart on a go to DJ with a wide open Pickens again in the middle. Now I loved the aggressiveness of him throwing the deeper ball but part of me wonders if he struggles with the middle of the field. You will also see an earlier play where a receiver was open on a deep/intermediate middle but KP throws a little late for A-Rob on a shallow cross.

Now we are 6-3 so I see no way we set Kenny loose this year. Not unless we are way behind which is not a good barometer of ability. But next year after Canada is gone I hope they just let it all go and either sink or swim. If we sink we get a top 5 pick in 2025. If we swim we then know for certain that Kenny is going to be the guy. But right now watching him I personally just don't see it.

Fortunately this will be proven wrong if not just for the fact of gaining experience and as season progresses, the pressure does as well. He will be forced to a degree to open up more. Tomlin himself stated that they expect more out of KP8.

You don’t need to give me a sermon on your opinion, it’s easy for me to piece that in on my own.

The good news is after another “successful” season ending at 10-7 (above the 9-8 standard) all will be retained for next year as we are obviously trending in the right direction and continuity will remain the norm AND we will have another season to ***** about all of the issues of the Tomlin/Canada offense next year so we can get a larger sample size of the effectiveness of this sideline only strategy.

Obviously, you have purchased your ticket to the “Standard is the Standard” show. You will sit and visualize the product within the ticket purchase, you will strive for good tasting pudding With out the use of butter.

That imageshare is directly from a article from a competitor site with the headline
“Ben Roethlisberger 30th in NFL in MOF passes”…
and it really only shows the first six games that year…

Ray Fittapaldo just said that they don’t trust young qb’s to throw over the middle of the field… its the same as the Rudolph thing… Tomlin doesn’t trust young guys to play.
For some reason I can only get the last half of the charts. It just spins and loads on the bottom of the screen.
2021
107- left
145- middle
148- right

Here's 2020 under Fichtner

2020
168- left
174 - middle
154- right

Kenny Pickett 2022

112- left
82- middle
111- right

2023

82- left
45- middle
84- right

We definitely aren't using the middle of the field since Kenny but we did use the middle with Roethlisberger under Canada and Fichtner. I watch the film and there's routes to the middle of the field. Now deep middle is always going to be a cold spot for QB's because unless it is cover 0 or you move the safety the middle after 8 yards is a tougher to throw to. You can look at every QB's heat map and the deep middle is always going to be cold compared to the deep left or right.

It's just the topic was blown leads, not SB's...Look, I'm finally looking at Tomlin differently, but man don't come with takes that are total BS...He's been #2...That means 30 OTHER teams are worse & only ONE TEAM has been better...

Criticize where warranted, but don't bash Tomlin when he is #2 out of 32 teams...

Tomlin doesn't allow it!
