Chuck Noll has died

R.I.P. coach Noll

R.I.P. Chuck. Thanks for all the Superbowls you gave us.

I was just a kid say 6 years old. Fresh out of a orphanage in Germany. A set of Americans brought me to their parents farm in Pennsylvania.

In what was considered Philadelphia country, New Ringgold Pa.

In the cabin the newly acquired grandparents turned on the TV, none of them Steeler fans mind you.

But the Steelers and Chuck Noll was playing some other team.

I don't remember that much about that year. I know for whatever reason I became glued to the Steelers from that day on.

I had to have everything Steelers. I mean everythinggggggg. Was pissed when my lunchbox wasn't Steelers but a grey workman lunchbox that was given to me. Just one example of a childhood disappointment. :)

The Steelers went on to win the Superbowl that year, 74 / 75.

As they grew as a team I grew as a child, at least my passion for the team did.

Now to the present I still have that Steeler obsession.

Steeler black truck with Steeler gold stripes. Steeler tat, Steeler mask, etc, etc.

Steeler Nation see is made up of many people from all over the world.

I would like to think of Chuck Noll as the architect of this fan base.

He helped build it mold it, a city that needed to latch onto something in hard times.

In me a child that wanted to latch onto something in hard times......

A great man off the field I am sure. but for me I will remember the man who brought winning to Pittsburgh.

And accomplished what no other football coach has. 4 SB victories !

And arguably one of the most dominating teams built in sports history.

Rest in Peace Chuck Noll

Steelers will miss you, Steeler Nation will miss you....

I will miss you..............

I would think there will be some kind of permanent memorial or statue or something put up in Heinz Field to honor Chuck pretty quickly. At least there should be.
Absolutely. I'm sure he wouldn't have supported it when he was alive, but definitely need a statue outside the stadium.

Not only did SteelerNation lose a great human being, man kind did as well.
A true gentleman. R.I.P. Coach.

Sorry for their loss, and condolences to his family and friends. Many many many thanks to the greatest coach of all time.
will be missed by many and all.

Salute the nation

RIP Coach.

Condolences to his family and Steeler Nation.

Thanks to the greatest coach of all time.

So many memories. RIP my friend.

Won 2 championships in the smashmouth era and 2 in the live ball era. No other coach would be willing to change their system when they were winning, but he did. Smarter than Walsh. Tougher than Parcells.

A true renaissance man!

Gone but never forgotten. Rest in peace Coach!

R.I.P. They say it takes an incredible amount of talent, hard work, and luck just to get to, forget about winning a Super Bowl.

This man must have had the first two in spades to get to and win four. 4-0 what a record.

Smarter than Walsh? Let's not get carried away here.

A very sad day; rest in peace Coach Noll.

Greatest Steeler of all, if not for Noll there is not a single Lombardi Trophy, the man completely changed the organization from top to bottom and did it with a class and grace unparalleled in NFL history.

He was a greater man than he was a coach and being the best coach in NFL history speaks volumes about his personal integrity.

He was all the things people have said about him. He was the best ever. Smarter than Walsh? Yes, because he built a juggernaut franchise from the ground up on his system that he picked and meticulously groomed the right talent to succeed in. Then he loosed them to be who they were. It was a machine. When a part went down, he had another one to plug in. When one side of the ball went down, the other rose up and dominated. He built a defense that has not, nor ever will be eclipsed. His franchise won 4 championships in 6 years. And they all expected to. They would have won 6 but they were too beaten up going into Oakland in 76, and they were simply out of sorts in 77. True to who they were, they returned and dominated.

But what really impressed me about that man was that football was how he made his living. He was a husband, father, Renaissance man, and best coach that ever walked the Earth in that order. Had he chosen another walk, he would have been the best there as well. Would have been a great professor, or a legendary general. Pittsburgh benefited from the path he chose.

A merciful end to Chuck's long battle with Alzheimers. RIP.

I saw Chuck and his wife in a grocery store, shortly after his retirement. He looked like the same old Chuck..........squinty eyes, that semi smile of contentment. Here was the legendary HOF coach, a tough man among men, assisting his wife with the weekly grocery shopping.

He was a great coach. He was also a good man. An era has ended.

Yea smarter than Walsh... Walsh developed the so call "west coat offense" while a coach with the bungals. He did so to try and compete with noll and the steelers. When he left and had success with the 49ers who were on their way to a undefeated season guess who beat them in San Fran... Noll and the steelers. Walsh was one of nolls biggest fans and I don't see 4 Super Bowl ring on his finger.

Gotta love his philosophy on choosing players...choosing 'self motivated players' and teaching them how to be better rather than motivating players who need it. RIP Chuck, Thank you for all your contributions to the game!

I was watching the 1979 game between the steelers and the fish. Blow out steelers. Chuck on the sidelines. The whole game was available on what pops up after one of those video clips folks post. I was wondering how he was doing now and then found out he died today. We have lost one of the legends of the game, it is unlikely that there will ever be another who is able to do what he did.

Anybody else remember Booger Smoot and Camp Chucky Mucky? Comedy gold.

Very sad news. Chuck Noll was the greatest football coach ever! He had some great outlooks on things too. He used to tell his players "If you are thinking about retirement, you are already retired".

He also used to say "pressure is something you only feel when you don't know what you are doing".

Chuck Noll will be missed!

This makes me sad...

I'm not kidding when I say, "if this thread doesn't deserve 100 pages - none do"...
