College Football Week 5

I'm just trying to get across that Allar is pushing a rock up a hill in this offense. You watch other college games all day and you will see QBs making easy throws with quick game, slants, screens, rub routes over the middle. Qbs make those throws, gain confidence, move the chains, then sprinkle in some deep shots.

Allar is back there waiting for slow developing routes to come open and he has to make a difficult throw. Now throw in that the OL is struggling. It looks like Matt Canada. Little opportunity for run after catch. Franklin admitted this in his press conference. He flat out said they need to get Allar more easy throws and on earlier downs.

Klatt nails it. This offense at no point has catered to Allar's strengths. It's like they're hoping he becomes a runner.

My bottom line thoughts on Allar

His accuracy issues are mostly due to footwork, lack of confidence, and too many tight window throws

The footwork is fixable. The confidence could be fixable if they modify this offense with some easier throws. The free plays nearly every college offense takes advantage of aside from Penn State. This leads to fewer tight window throws. Complete underneath stuff and the other stuff opens up.

It does worry me that they may have broken him. He's messing up, but he's destined for that in this scheme. It looks like how Franklin ruined Hackenberg. Hackenberg looked like a future #1 pick under Bill O'Brien. Then Franklin came, installed RPO and it screwed up Hack's footwork and mechanics. He's doing it again with Allar.

To make matters worse, the #2 QB and heir apparent, Ethan Grunkelmeyer is also a pocket passer. Adapt your offense to a pocket passer you jackass.

Give DeBoer a chance. It's not easy taking over for a legend, and Saban is arguably the best college football coach of all-time. I've met DeBoer, and I was impressed with his demeanor. He has the chops to succeed in Tuscaloosa.

He's had some bad losses, to be sure, but terrible recruiting? You'll have to explain that statement to me, because he had a top 3 recruiting class in 2025, and Alabama is still trending towards the top 5 for 2026.
Noted. I'm pissed about the NIL, probably, but we lost key players in his first year and I don't see a lot of bright spots on the roster just yet...

Give me a guy who can read defenses pre and post snap and is accurate with the ball. Most dual threats are that way because they can’t do those things and are forced to run a lot.
100%

Give us an nfl QB, tnx.

I could buy this excuse for Allar when he plays teams like Oregon and Ohio State, but he should be absolutely lighting up the middle school teams he played the first three weeks of the season.

Berm, what's your thoughts on Simpson?

It’s not Allar specifically, it’s Penn State football. He loves it, and is an eternal optimist. I can appreciate that. I too love Penn State football, but the eye test should tell you something is wrong. If this was a one off, ok. But with Drew Allar, it’s becoming a trend. He’s just not an accurate passer. There is more than anecdotal evidence of that. It’s like he thinks or worries too much about making a mistake. When he steps into his passes and lets it rip he’s as good as anyone. He just rarely steps into it and lets it rip. He’s out there aiming the ball and throwing flat footed. Plus, he just doesn’t seem to fit whatever they are trying to do on offense. The whole offense just seems like this weird awkward operation that needs figured out.
Part of Allar's problem, I think, is that he's afraid to step into the throws where he's going to have to take a big hit after releasing the ball. I've noticed that several times. The kid has a great arm; there's no denying that. But if he doesn't have the guts to absorb the pressure in those tough spots, he'll never amount to anything.

Yeah. Penn State needs a guy like Dante Moore. Too bad he plays for Oregon.

DeBoer didn't have as much to do with NIL than some other head coaches. Not last year, at least. With the new NCAA House settlement, that may change. Alabama is not hurting by any means, but they are not the NIL juggernaut that most fans believe them to be. They don't have Texas oil money.

When Saban retired, it was inevitable that Bama was going to lose a lot of players he recruited, no matter who took the program over. QB Keelon Russell was a huge get in the class of 2025 for DeBoer. Keep an eye on him next year.
