I remember in the 90's getting up before it was light out to watch the Pittsburgh news broadcasting live from Three Rivers stadium all morning before the playoff game, then into the 2000's at Heinz Field, the shots from the tailgates all morning before the playoff games, there was always that feeling that we could win the whole thing in any given playoffs, there was that excitement. This is what Tomlin has made disappear from me as a fan, I'd love to see them knock Baltimore out, but there's not real thoughts of us having any shot at winning the Super Bowl, that feeling has been gone for about 6 years now. It's not just me, it's the entire city, there hasn't been any clips of merchandise flying off the shelves across the city like those previous years.

GREAT post Coryea, thanks for all your great ones along the way.

Yesterday while driving i was listening to the “Blitz” radio show. They were discussing the Patriot Coach firing and actually had Robert Kraft interview.

I know, I know, who gives a **** on what hand-job bob has to say…….. right…………..

Well he went on about various things but there was one thing that stuck out and he sounded very serious about it………….

He said something to the affect of he owed the fans. He felt responsible to the fans for a better product on the field. He felt RESPONSIBLE and accountable to his team’s fans. Some more along those lines, but his sincerity seems genuine.

I don’t care about Bob Kraft or that ****-hole franchise, but I do care that an owner actually feels a little accountability to their fan base. That owner was also willing to take action on hopes of improving that product on the field of play.

I’m like many here, always hoping, but also realize the shallow of the hope that can transpire.

Salute the nation

Yep! I hear ya! I go back to the golden years of the 70’s and all I can say it was a magical time in the city.
I worked in the city in what was the US Steel Bldg. and the entire city, Western Pennsylvania was on fire. It was electric and people were excited come playoff time.
It’s funny you brought this up since I was thinking the other day that I’m dreading this now more concerned about them not getting embarrassed.
Even one of our favorite sons Big Ben said yesterday he’s unfortunately picking the Ravens.
Ben knows things are dysfunctional over there in Steelerland but he’s not ever going to come out and say it but I think indirectly he’s kind of saying it.
This feeling sucks!

My caveat to that is it isn't what the Steelers have become one way or the other. I just think we are all older. A lot of things have happened since I was a kid in the '70s and a young father in the '90s. I remember those '90s times. Fighting to makes ends meet, pay bills. Damn oil bill comes, you gotta figure that out. Oh, no, the alternator on the truck crapped out. The Steelers were an escape for 3 or more hours. It's partly why I took losses so hard. Now? You still have bills, but if something goes a little sideways, it doesn't crush you. People who were alive in the '90s aren't around anymore, you become a grandparent, and all the sudden because of so many things a Steeler football game doesn't hold the same importance.

For me football is just not as important as it used to be. Nothing to do with Tomlin or Rooney or anything really.
It is just a game played by millionaires.

I still love the Steelers. Watch every game. I just refuse to let the wins or losses dictate how I feel.

The NFL has changed over the years. It is way more of a business than a sport.

We were more idealistic. The Steelers players were all good guys, not like the Cowboys players. Then you get to the age in which you realize every team has those kind of guys.

Not necessarily live and die by what happens, but maybe the better word would've been expectations, back then you could see them making a run at the Super Bowl or at the very least being a tough out, lately instead of expecting them to go on a run or them being an actual contender, for the past 7 or 8 years you just pray they keep the playoff game close.

The magic of Big Ben. We all knew Ben was a once in a lifetime franchise QB. He did it in an unconventional, often ugly way, but man if that guy wasn't the best guy in the game when all hope was gone and we needed a miracle. So many winning drives, we just knew he would come through and find a way. He always did. The game saving tackle against the Colts after the Bus fumble. Nothing short of legendary. The last second play to Holmes falling into the endzone in Baltimore to make the playoffs. (almost got killed leaving that game). Countless other ones.

Atleast we are lucky as fans to be able to relive the good old days.

Ben got near the end, The killer Bee's we're gone, you just knew it was over.
Steeler football will never be the same as the era Ben gifted Steelernation.
He spoiled us as fans. He should have had 2 more if it weren't for Mendenhall, coach Tomlin and the historically bad defenses in the playoffs.
Ben doesn't get nearly the respect he deserves, He was the glue.
Tomlin gets way too much credit.

You, sir, are a genius. Thank you!!!

It’s sad but true..
To be simplistic..
I’m looking more forward to Thursday nights game than Saturday’s..
That kind of sums it up for me in one neat little package..

I remember looking at the upcoming Steelers schedule and be able to check off the teams they will beat, and in most cases you were right.
These days you just don’t know.

The one I remember was in 2009 basically last play of game vs Packers and a young Rodgers. Ben made a laser throw across his body to Mike Wallace in the corner of the EZ where only he could catch it. Even in a year we forget, Ben was pulling out games you'll always remember.

Yeah, but I get annoyed with James Franklin, too.

Maybe you are a Notre Dame guy.

My PSU buddies and I kinda have a running joke. A few years ago, Penn State had just crushed, I can't remember, St. Mary's Sisters of the Poor and Blind let's say, Ohio State was the next game. They asked Franklin as he was coming off the field if he was looking forward to next week. He said something that he doesn't even know who they play next week he was so focused on the game they just played. We always joke around we wonder if Franklin knows who he's playing this week.

I used to love when the Steelers got the Monday Night Game. Or the Primetime slot on Sunday. We used to perform like no others. Everyone watching. My Steelers hat to work the next day. “Your team looked great last night “. People I didn’t even know used give me the thumbs up.

The amount of times we’ve been featured the last few years and have absolutely **** the bed.
I still wear the hat the next day. But now I get…”what the **** is wrong with the Steelers “….”Your team looks like ****”

In Texas today, sports radio was talking about The Playoffs. Guy said "once Tomlin gets a winning season it's a slow death. That game isn't even worth watching. Glad it's on Prime."

Tomjack has run this car into a ditch and we are a laughing stock. But hey, equity and inclusion is alive !!!!

It is a game that the Steelers are playing. Definitely worth watching.

Great post, Coryea! Playoff time when you believe your team has a chance is something special and an incredibly fun time to watch sports. It hasn't been that way for a long time.

Great post Tom. Well said. It's weird, I should be totally amped up for a playoff game against our biggest rival but I can give less than a **** at the moment. Maybe that will change at game time but I just don't have a good feeling about this game or the Steelers as a whole until changes are made at the top. I definitely miss my old team.

I also miss SportsBeat....Stan, Guy, love the show!!! I never missed an episode back in the late 90s. It sure would be great to get their take on the state of the Steelers these days.... Stan was never one to mince words.
