Dick LeBeau Out as Defensive Coordinator

Sign Suh and go 4-3! write it down! ;)
I'm still dreaming about this. Not gonna happen though...

I honestly cannot believe this. **** you Rooneys, fire the cancer, not the lung.
You're crazy.
I do not think any of the fans didn't love DL.

But the NFL changed and the Steelers had to adapt.

and sometimes in a long tenured coach players simply start tuning them out.

In no way does this take away from DLs legacy....... he had his time...........

Not sure he was the MAIN problem but it would be hard pressed to say the D was effective or close to being effective.

I loved LeBeau ( refrained from referencing him here as Dick)

just time to go in a new direction IMO a fresh look............ a different approach............
Agreed.
Uh, there is a wee bit of revisionist history going on here already, don't ya think? How many 3rd and for ******* evers did we give up in that damn ratbird game? I get so ******* tired of seeing wide open wr's run across the middle 2 yards from the 1st down marker on 3rd and 15 or more and just get the extra yards.

**** tackle the catch, I'm ready for a new direction on defense, let's play press and kill the ******* qb, if we give up some "big play" strikes from it, so be it, I'd rater get stabbed once, that die from 1,000 ******* paper cuts.

Joe

Exactly. I'd like to see the team bring in a DC that can come up with a plan to defend a mobile QB.

Butler did work as a LB coach before coming here. He was the LB coach in Cleveland for 4 years and they ran a 4-3. He also played as a 4-3 LB for Seattle for 10 years. I'd think he has a pretty good grasp of the 4-3 if they choose to switch up or run a hybrid defense.

Do you think the DC job is one that other coaches in the league would covet? Or do they look at the players on our defense and say ehhh I'll pass..? We have some talent but a lot of holes still.

With Lebeau, we get damn near zero contribution from rookies and young players in general. You can not go into a draft with any type of enthusiasm, knowing that..

This just allowed me to cross one of my big complaints off the list. Fresh start. Find a gem. Find someone relatively young.

Steelers haven't had a losing season in awhile
have a O that's improving
6 rings

whats not to love?

I, personally, think it would be idiotic to switch to a 4-3. There is absolutely no real reason to expect any of our players would be any good in a 4-3. Its a pipe dream pushed by people who prefer the 4-3. This team has run the 3-4 since the days of the dynasty. its not just going to switch up. a move to a 4-3 would mean next year and probably the following year the whole d is rebuilt and everyone has to relearn everything, rather than some things.. It effectively crushes the last two years of Roethlisberger's prime. it also means the defensive scouting department likely needs overhauled... its a pretty big change. the kind sad sack teams like Cleveland make regularly..... if that's why we are moving from LeBeau, well then Tomlin is a freaken ******** imbacile.

frankly Dan Rooney was the lifeblood of this team from the moment he took over and I am starting to fear that ART 2 is going to run the team as badly as Art 1 did, only without being the super swell dude Art1 was......

Actually more teams are switching to the 3-4. Might not prevent Tombert from finally having his chance to switch to his beloved 4-3.

And short passes.

I would say no, Jarvis doesn't sound like he has the heart of a Lebeau pick

Ummm ....I thought Dick never made any picks or had any input....i could be wrong though.

Yep. One that schemes around the game that has been playing since Goodell took office. And it has changed. Lebeau for what ever reason never changed anything...Hell. It hardly seemed he changed anything in game for the last 3 or 4 season. I'm not hating on Dick. Just saying what i have seen for the last half decade.

Farewell, Blinky.

I do believe the Steel Curtain was a base 4 - 3.

Definitely were some awesome defenses he coached, he is doing the right thing, wishing him all the best. (As long as he doesn't go back to the Bungles!)

who pulled the trigger on the Cortez Allen contract? Mitchell signing? Just curious. I want to pull out all of their toenails whomever it was.
I hope this was all dick or the wrong guy got canned. Won't take long to figure out...

yes I wasn't clear... they switched in the early 80's when the linemen from the 4-3 were more or less done...the same year Mean joe retired IIRC... and the transition wasn't exactly seemless. the team was 7th in defense the year before the switch... it was 17th the year after... and proceded to finish in the bottom 10 for the next 5 years... its not something to be done lightly

How about gradually. Say over an 8 year period by replacing personnel from an aging 3-4 defense with picks and FAs that are more suited to a 4-3?

We should be talking about a 4-4 verse a 3-4 or 4-3 the idea of a stong saftey is done or even a middle linebacker or a nose tackle. Time to get in the ball game here.

Anyone that keeps thinking drafting Jones, shazier, and signing Allen and Mitchell is Lebeau's doing you're insane, that falls on the head coach, he may ask for input from other coaches, but he's making the final decision, and he should.
Plus does anyone really think if Lebeau had that kind of control he would've released Porter after the 06 seasons? Hell no.

Yep. And the HC picks all of his coaches here also. Go figure.

If there's a new way, I'll be the first in line, but it better work this time!
Good luck DL!
Screw Rex Ryan.
Heyward is the only lineman I can see in the 4/3. I think the LB's could adjust, but our secondary is built on 3/4 principles also. A transition to a 4/3 will not be as seamless as many are supposing.

So one less person to blame for poor drafting. So we don't have the horses to run either system. I suppose the draft fairy will swoop in and give us a rebirth of the Steel Curtains 4-3. I see growing pains either way.
