Right now if we let dj go we will not have a true 1 wr chase is best suited as a 2 Austin slot pickens also has more traits of a 2 dj can run all the routes chase he have seen his great frame and speed, I still think with internal growth maturity and a better qb he can reach Julio jones level in his prime he is bigger faster just needs to polish route running and consistency. I think both chase and pickens look the ceiling can be as high as Julio or burress I think Austin could be like sanders or randle el if so that’s a poor man’s ab.
Everything is messed up because of Kirk deal guy had 77/982/ 5 vs dj 101/1167/8 Kirk deal 4/72 20 bonus 37 guaranteed if we can open up and try to get him on a home town discount incentive laced deal that’s the only way I see him staying if u tag him it’s 20 million next yr he can agree to something like this 4 years 66 million 26 million bonus 30 guaranteed and make it each year he goes over 1000 yds 2.5 mill bonus as well as double digit td. You let him walk or trade for picks your top 2 needs are cb and wr. He is a game changer

Meh, Pickens is going to be a 1… he was chronically undervalued because of that injury… very heath milleresque really

And Austin is the first tiny guy we have had that has both magnificent quickness and actual speed… we already had more at wr than people thought… im more worried about olb depth and tackle depth

If dj has a better year likely withhold 2 mobile qb and a good line and both qb with big arms he can rack up the stat sheet his ypc should be quite high if we lock him now we will save as opposed to tagging him’ and then doing a 4-5 year deal

It's either a new contract this season or he's gone next one. Dont see a WR franchise tag applied and for sure he will want to go to another team that will pay him obscene kind of money

Let some other team overpay for a mediocre WR.

Johnson is good, I just don't think he's in that $20+ million bracket of receivers. The Steelers didn't draft two guys this year to break the bank on a guy who isn't one of the top players on the team.

There is trade value in him. If Pickens starts to show up and let’s say Miller plays good ball, then why debate Johnson’s contract? Yeah, he gets open quickly but those catches seem to fade away towards the end of the season. Not resigning him to a ridiculous contract right now is not very smart business.

Who says PIT is letting DJ go? If he doesn’t get a contract extension, catches another 100 passes with a new QB, they will tag him to work out a new deal.

I don't think he is mediocre but if Claypool gets head out of *** and Pickens is as advertised there is a strong argument for letting him walk and drafting. The market is very bloated.

What about trading him today? Is his value on the team larger than a very possible 1st or 2nd in next year's draft ?

Do we have the Horses to oprate without him this year ?

I'd like to sign him to a resonable deal and go from there but I think there is to big of difference from his side to our side.

That most certainly is a possibility but not a for certain. If no contract this year there is big risk as to how well he does in the season as opposed to how big the said contract could be. The "TAG" might be cheap and for one year.

Chase and a bunch of unproven guys? No thanks. See how Claypool and the rookies pan out this year and consider tagging DJ next year.

DJ thinks he’s a better WR then he has consistently shown to be. Put the numbers on paper and he will get his deal.

you don't get in cap trouble by paying great players, you get in cap trouble by paying good players at great player rates.

The Chiefs decided to let Tyreek Hill leave because it was too much money. Same with the Titans dealing AJ Brown. There have been tons of quality WRs coming into the league for years. There's a surplus now.

I can't see paying DJ top money.

DJ is worth every bit of $20M a season, and the Steelers are dumb for not signing him already, because his price will continue to rise with mediocre WRs getting signed for that amount.

Think about it guys, Ben was getting the ball out in 1.7 seconds last 2 seasons. He caught 195 balls in 2 years, with most of them being around the 2sec mark. Look at his volume vs Ben's time in the pocket. It is no wonder why DJ had the best separation on his first break according to PFF. Kid is undefendable, like AB before him.

He's improved each year, has never been a problem and had less drops than both Hill and Kupp had last year. You don't hear their fan bases asking for them to be cut, do you? Worst argument I've ever heard against a Pro Bowl WR in my time as a Steeler fan...

For me it is just the price tag. How much does it cost against the cap. That is next year's problem for me. I do nothing with him this year. If he is worth that big money some are advocating he will prove it this year or won't. Like it was mentioned you fortify your lines. If signing him doesn't road block and he shows he is worthy. Fine. From a Steelers perspective they probably are taking the wait and see approach too. They usually lock up who they are high on. If they don't resign him they either think he isn't worth that and / or they see the position as easily restock capable.

Johnson is good but he is in no way in the elite category. The WR market went ballistic this season and it's crazy. WR's just aren't worth that much to a team when they touch the ball so few times. The Steelers should have done what many did before the draft and traded DJ for multiple high picks. If Brown got the Rats a 1st, DJ is still better and could have gotten the same. But, as I've said numerous times before, DJ is not a top 10 WR and he probably isn't top 20. I rattled off 20 WR's I'd take ahead of him pretty quickly and easily. He may continue to get better but I just can't see paying any WR over $20 million per unless they are a true top 5 or maybe top 10 talent. DJ just is not despite his statistics.

This is me. I'm starting to think in the modern league with its money structure and tge Q making what he does you are just going to have to recycle rbs and wrs

How often do the Steelers give wide receivers big money contracts? Hines Ward, who was a face of the franchise, and Antonio Brown who was the best in the league. Has there been anyone else in recent years to get an extension? Unless a wide receiver is a legit top tier game breaker, I'm probably not going to pay them big money.

Now if he goes out and has a monster season and we don't see signs from Claypool or Pickens of being a future No. 1 I tag him and then consider working out a deal.

Based on what exactly?

Right now with Sawftee we do not have a true 1 WR....let sawftee walk and draft a replacement. No reason to overpay a weak minded player

Huh????? DJ weak minded?

I'm sorry Stryker cause I really respect your football opinions. But....... you can deep dive into reasons and analytics but if you are gonna pay a guy who has averaged 900 yards and 7 TDs 20 mil per season you are gonna have some huge misses. What if that is his best?
