Draft Day Two

Tape, Connor (besides being a warrior, local kid, and great story) will go a LONG way towards fixing our long-standing red zone woes. The kid is a tough pounding type of RB, and he will play a critical role on this team, including keeping Bell fresh for the playoffs.

Oh, so the plan is to give the ball to Conner instead of the best RB in the NFL in key situations?

He runs a 4.65 and has stiff hips. But he's a great guy. Draft the high character guy in RD 6, not in RD 3 when there are still players who can help you immediately on the board. Is Conner better than Fitz Toussaint? Maybe, but not by much.

Conner is vastly better than Touissant. Conner's only un-****** up season was his freshman year in 2014. Look at the tape for that season.

Also, yes, he ran a 4.65. No dispute that speed is not his forte. But if he ran a 4.55, do you think he is available at pick 104?? I always wonder why a team is criticized for drafting a guy in round 3 "when he ran a [whatever] 40 did only [whatever] reps."

Holy ****, why do we think the guy is still there in round 3???

Bell ran a 4.6, not great speed either.

Looks like a Steeler running back in the old school Bettie mold. How can you hate the pick.

Because he's not Bettis. Bettis was not just a bull. He had great feet and could make people miss.

The Steelers picked up Blount as a free agent and they can have him again if they want. You can pick up power backs off the street. I don't understand spending a 3rd rounder on one.

I've been excited over a Steelers draft pick 3 times in my life.

Big Ben
Polamalu
And now James Conner.

That's good company.

He's not Bettis but he has decent feet to make people miss and has gotten better at pass catching.

Obviously they have been around the kid to know his character as well as traits that he can bring to the team.

Read a tweet from guy that works at WTAE who said Big Ben lobbied Tomlin hard to draft Conner.

They badly needed a running back that can take touches for real from Bell. They are running him into the ground. I've seen the speed guys who get tackled with one hand. He may not take it to the house, but he is going to move the chains.

Great character guy with power and heart...hope this works out.

If someone is upset with the Conner pick it is proof that some are just never pleased with anything or they are just extremely biased.
So pumped up.

I wanted Leggett instead of Conner.

It's not hard to see that Conner was a homer pick. You can argue the benefit of having a guy take carries from Bell and keep Bell healthy towards the end of the year. But, that doesn't necessitate selecting Conner here.
Hell, we could have solidified the DL with Caleb Brantley. or taken Leggett. Or even taken Desmond King.

I don't mind having Conner on the team, but let's not act like he was the BPA.

No **** You. You just hate him cuz he went to Pitt. He has high character so that means that you have to ignore his 4.65 in the 40. His 29 inch vertical and his slow 7.14 in the 3 cone.

Yes, they could have really bolstered the pass rush with Lawson or maybe finished off the secondary with Desmond King or a few others, but they locked down the backup RB position with a guy who tested out like a street free agent.

I liked the Watt pick but i'm not certain he'll be a stud. I would have liked another pick there. Harrison is old so they do need depth there as well as a starter.

They need multiple DBs. Sutton is a good prospect, but do i feel like the secondary is all fixed because we got him? Hell no.

It worries me that maybe the steelers think they are all set now at OLB and DB.

I get where you're coming from, but like Billings last year and everyone being so pissed off for passing on the guy a hundred times, there is a reason these guys are in straight up free falls. I would love both King and Lawson, but it's hard to ignore the fact that 32 teams have passed on them 3 times now. There's gotta be more to the story.

Bell ran a 4.6, not great speed either.

Bell was overweight at the combine and ran 4.6 which is still significantly better than 4.65 for Conner. But Bell also checked in with a very good 3 cone of 6.75. Bell was also much more elusive at Michigan State at his heavier weight than Conner has ever shown.

Nobody was expecting Bell to lose all that weight and become the gumby-like playmaker that he is. But even if he hadn't, he still would have been a very good RB at his heavier weight.

I see Conner as a limited player. A short yardage specialist. If anybody recalls, i was dead set against the Steelers drafting Eddie Lacy because i saw him as just a bruiser and not a special player. And he is more athletic than Conner.

Maybe Conner will drop weight and gain agility but i don;t think you bet on that with a 3rd round pick.

The character thing is great, but it scares the **** out of me if the steelers felt they needed to spend a high pick on a character guy to help keep the locker room under control.

The thing is, I don't think King or Lawson have really been passed over yet. Their positions are just really deep. And i'm just throwing those 2 out as examples. There are multiple DBs and OLBs that i think were better values and much bigger needs in RD 3.

The steelers track record with late round DBs has been terrible which is the main reason i hate this pick. They had a golden opportunity to come away with 2 early round DBs and added to Burns and Davis, they could have fixed the secondary right there.

Now i'm hoping they hit on a future starter with a later pick and history is not on their side with DB picks.

Is Conner better than Fitz Toussaint?

I seriously think this is one of the worst picks the steelers have ever made. I don't get it.

Yes, far and away....What the heck has Toussaint ever brought to us? zip, zilcho...2.9 yds average....The one game where he was doing something against the BRONCOS which we should have won , he averaged a whopping 3.3 yds. Oh and then he decides to not protect the ball and gets stripped....

No offense, but if he doesn't fumble, we may have gotten #7......

Toussaint 5' 9" 204 Conners 6'2' 235....

All the criticism of his 40 time is just plain short-sighted.....Screw the 40 times for a big bruising back......The 40 means very little as he crushes through the middle carrying 2-3 guys with him.....

If you look at the year before the injury and cancer you could see a solid upside. So perhaps based on upside he was their BPA. And one can argue he is still working his way back from chemo. Homer pick or not, I think the kid has more upside than most want to give him credit for.

You can judge 40 time.

But heart and drive? you can't always put a finger on.

This kid is all heart and effort.

He has the look of someone who will play well in-spite of his critics.

Will he be a superstar? maybe not.

But that doesn't mean that he can't upgrade depth, and get the job done in a workman fashion if Bell goes down at the most inopportune time once again.

One of the worst ever? Really? Get real here. It's a third round comp pick and they've spent probably 10 worse picks in the last handful of years than this alone.

I have to tell you, I get a great laugh every single year in these draft threads when we pass on taking "that guy" in the 2nd Round and people go completely bonkers. It's a travesty! They are idiots! Now he'll go to another team and be a stud! **** this! Then when we pass on "that guy" again in the 3rd Round because he's still sitting there, it's another eruption. Then in the 4th (still there), we pass again. Repeat 5th Round, 6th Round (stilllllll there)........ Too funny.

The Steelers have been allergic to drafting Pitt players for far too long. Gets us great depth at RB. Yes we have the best RB in the league but that's only when he's on the field. Which hasn't as yet been a full season.
Between Watt and Connor the team instantly got a bunch better.

DB's left on the board for round two:

Awuzie, Chidobe CB 6'0" 202 Colorado

Evans, Justin S 6'0" 199 Texas A&M

Tankersley, Cordrea CB 6'1" 199 Clemson

Melifonwu, Obi S 6'4" 224 Connecticut

Baker, Budda S 5'10" 195 Washington

Lewis, Jourdan CB 5'10" 188 Michigan

Sutton, Cameron CB 5'11" 188 Tennessee

Moreau, Fabian CB 6'0" 206 UCLA 5.7

We've got Sutton! I would have preferred Tankersley in round two, but oh well...

Here is the list of guys I think the Steelers could have interest in during the second round (in no particular order):

Kevin King,CB,Washington
Chidobe Awuzie,CB,Colorado
Budda Baker, FS, Washington
Marcus William, FS,Utah
Chris Wormley,DT,Michigan
Quincy Wilson,CB,Florida
Marcus Maye,FS,Florida
Josh Jones,SS,NC State
Raekwon McMillan,ILB,Ohio State
Obi Melifonwu,SS,Connecticut
Fabian Moreau,CB,UCLA
Zay Jones,WR,East Carolina
Gerald Everett,TE,South Alabama
Sidney Jones,CB,Washington

YIKES! TMC didn't have CB Sutton on his list and we picked him. Remember, I made a point round two was best for a corner...or you get the too small and not fast types?
