Early First Round Mock Draft From McShay Has Steelers Selecting ....

Shlit, I hope we go very deep in the play offs, cause it will be a flucking Looooooong off season, if these are starting already.

Salute the nation

Malcolm Brown is a RB but Malcom Brown is a DT. He is not in the same league as Casey Hampton. McCullers is better than any I've seen on tape from college. It's still a need but to say it is the biggest need is to pretend a stud NT (if one were available) would somehow see the field more than 1/3 of the time. The reality is that we are moving away from our "base" D.

It's still early but I don't see ANY NTs, OLBs or CBs worth spending a high draft pick on. Some of them may turn out ok but IF we want to immediately get better, we're gonna have to take the players that have "value" at our picks and ones who can be seen as immediate impact guys, IMO.

There are a few good players who could "slip" to us but as I see it now, we won't be getting any high impact rookies UNLESS we are willing as a team to take a "suspect character" guy like DGB, PJ WIliiams or Marcus Peterson.

We need proven players at CB and OT as well as OLB. I don't know the plan BUT very few are available in this draft, IMO.

Why a SS so early? I still think Shamarko is the future at SS and then we have mitchel at FS for better or worse for at least a couple of years

he is fragile and has'nt even been any nickel and dime sets,

no NT b/c eithier re-sign Mclendon to a cap friendly 2 year deal and groom Mcullers he has all the traits to be a future starter once polished, massive frame frame 6"7 350-360, will command double teams, try to look at tape of Vince Wilfork @ John Henderson and keep working to improve pad level, I would try adding a vet like Dan Williams or a guy who's been there don that to be the 3rd NT like a hoke/kirshkie type DL that Mccullers could learn from and dress 3 NT and hopefully next year in the nickel at rare times they can kick big dan to DE as well.
Mitchell wanted to do that but he said he has to learn the midsdle and master it before we think of playing him outside.

Pass rush is the biggest need by a mile. Maybe they actually keep Worilds. He's had such a sub-par season that maybe they can sign him to a reasonable deal. I'm OK with Worilds if he's your #2 guy. He's probably gone though and Moats takes that role. Moats could also be decent if they have a stud opposite him.

The Steelers need a #1 pass rusher. They need somebody who can actually defeat blocks and not just "get a push".

It's too early to give up on Jones but at the same time, it would be crazy to draft as if Jarvis is the answer. He just doesn't have enough burst to be more than a wingman to a top pass rusher. He's Clark Haggans. Effective if you have Porter on the other side, but just a guy on his own.

Steelers were desperate for a Safety and they traded up for Troy. They have to do whatever it takes to get a top pass rusher this offseason.

just we need to take one good ... i'm looking and looking and i still don't understand who will be a sure thing

I've wondered about this...

Cameron Erving was said to have been a 1st round pick last year, but returned to the Seminoles. He's since moved from LT to Center.
Obviously showing flexibility.

Why not add to our OL?

Bingo. Time to move on from Foster and Beachum...

I have seen a number of mocks showing us taking the Oregon CB or PJ Williams at Florida State.

I'd like to see two CB's in the first 3 picks. If our coverage was better we would be blitzing more and picking up the sacks.

Any CB or Safety help that we draft is going to take a minimum of a year to develop. DL have shown that rookies can play right away and make an impact. The best way to disguise a weak secondary is a damn good pass rush. Draft another DL preferrably a fat ******* NT to rotate in on long drives, and then address the CB and Safety positions in the next few rounds as well as OT/OG and TE.

if we don't find a real #1 OLB a change to the 4-3 would be better suited for the actual roster?

Jarvis Jones Shazier Timmons

Tuitt Heyward McCullers McLendon

I think 4-3 DEs are easier to find now

Oregon kid is more of a slot guy, and just tore his ACL in practice. I'll take him in rd 4. We have to go OLB or corner in rd 1. If we can sign a good corner or OLB in FA then that makes this easier. I am also open to trading up for a stud pass rusher if necessary. I know we liked the kid from UCLA this past draft, but he didn't make it to us. Don't sleep on the TE from Ohio State. Similar to Heath and could be a nice 3rd rounder.

Put these god damn mocks away until our season has officially ended. We've got something more important we are playing for.

Only problem with this kid if he is good enough to play left tackle as I see it is why would he be available when we draft? Even if the Steelers were to lose the next two (not an outcome I desire) most good left tackle prospects will be long gone by our pick. Going into the playoffs at least one game and, right now I see the ability to win the division with in our grasp, would put a lot of these guys way out of our reach unless we do a trade to move up.

i like trae waines cb from michican state

A CB needs to develop and learn the defense, but one on one coverage does not need much teaching.
A first pick corner can help right away. Our last #1 pick corner Chad Scott, I believe started as a rookie.

McClendon is good as long as he can stay healthy. McCullers is just too tall to be NG. Too much of him to hit. He's never gonna make it at NG. I would go this way:

1. Corner
2. Free Safety
3. Outside backer
4. Corner
5. Outside backer
6. Tight end
7. Offensive tackle

#1 Secondary, #2 Secondary and #3 OLB Linebacker with a top Free Agent Secondary signing after allowing Worilds to walk.

and who's playing OLB next season? Jarvis and Moats and a 3rd rounder as backup? We'd never get any pressure

It seems a little dumb to have a mock draft before you know draft position, see the bowl games or have the combine. But I'm sure it helps the experts readership. And when we think of the effect rookie CB's, pass rushers, and OTs from this years draft have had on the contenders don't get your expectation's too high.

Just a way to pass the time. At this point any "projections" would be based on perceived need rather than needs, position, value. It's interesting to see what names these guys are floating around out there and how much that will change over the next 4 1/2 months.

We should try what AZ did with their tall NT Calais Campbell. They backed him up a couple of feet so he could use his reach advantage to initiate the contact without letting short armed centers to get into his body so quickly. Also helps with cut blocks. He said the couple of feet back difference was night and day.
