The Steelers poor performances during 2021 have set off many of their former players. Most notably former safety Ryan Clark, and running back Rocky Bleier. But this time…this time was the man himself. The man that transformed the franchise.

Joe Greene.

“Mean Joe” didn’t like what he saw.

“In all the years I’ve been watching my team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Black and Gold, Thursday night, that first half was probably the saddest days I’ve had in all my years of playing, and all of my years since my retirement of watching the Steelers play. That was a poor poor example of the black and gold, “Green continued. “And it disappointed me and I’m sure it disappointed a lot of guys that that love the Pittsburgh Steelers. The fans that love the Pittsburgh Steelers.”

The Steelers fell behind the Minnesota Vikings 29-0 and looked helpless. They allowed Dalvin Cook to rush for over a 100 yards in the first half. They left receivers wide open. They could barely muster a first down on offense. It was as ugly as it could get for the Steelers.

Then the topic of Chase Claypool came up during the interview. He didn’t hold back on the second year receiver.

Do you play this game to show your butt, or to win the game,” Greene said when asked about Claypool’s antics on the final drive of the game Thursday night.

Wow. Just wow.

Outside noise is always there for NFL teams, especially the Steelers who have a fan base that expects Super Bowls. There’s lots of Steelers alumni in the media. The opinions are always there from high profile former players. But this is the patriarch of the team. Only the Rooney family’s voice could carry more value.

This team, it’s coaches, it’s leaders, it’s ownership.. they should listen to what Greene has to say. And take it to heart.

Mean Joe Greene said the first half against the #Vikings was the saddest he’s ever been watching the #Steelers and has a message for @ChaseClaypool.

Great article Justin, thank you

Joe Green is passionate yet to this day, can't blame him. If the current team possessed 1/2 the heart that Joe has there would be a big turn around. Tomlin can learn from these past players if not just to realize he may need to change his approach to the game / personel / coaching .

If he does that,he will probably have to remove a lot of guys who refuse to change. I'm not sure the coach himself is willing to change his ways. The team is a reflection of who is leading them.

I totally hear yaz while realizing there will be no change. I also would like some of these guys question ownership as well but there is a fine line there too.

Then remove the coach. Look, it's no huge secret that I am not a Tomlin fan from years ago. But, all feelings of his tenure aside, if he can't maintain a culture of winning, he is the problem. The problem needs to go. Period.

About a week ago, Dick Hoak was given a surprise 82nd birthday party in Hempfield.
When the question was asked about the current state of the Steelers, his only comment was, “I have opinions, but I don’t want to say anything.”
Ever the gentleman, his answer implied a great deal.

15 years in and Tomlin needs to change his approach. Yikes I know he is dumb as **** but it needs to take him 15 years ?

We know why he can't say anything.

When you read and hear things like this from former players and legends, it has to point the finger at Tomlin and the ownership. That's where this all starts and who is allowing this garbage to be put on the field. Words at the end of the season from Rooney aren't enough. He and the ownership need to take action. But, do they have the balls to truly take decisive action? I don't think anything will change after this season other than words. Sure, we will have free agency and the draft but if our coaches and leadership don't get the culture back with this team, then nothing will change.

Generally speaking................... it takes a major overhaul to acheive cultural change. Change Includes coaching and specific players regardless of ability.

Most here are ready for that, I just wonder if the team / ownership is.

Tomlin is the head coach of this football team which means EVERYTHING points to him. We should all be sick and tired of all the excuses, late season collapses, poor decision making, ****** draft picks and ****** free agents, and believe me, he has plenty of input in player personnel.
The guy has been propped up by the Rooneys, the front office and the media which has grossly overrated this guy.
Where in the NFL could this guy have lasted as long as he has but here? Nowhere!
This football team needs a hard reset and it starts with getting Tomlin and Colbert the hell out of there. If not, the same **** will occur but we won’t have a losing season. That seems to be the new standard.

Yeah, I read this morning that Greene was less than pleased. Steeler legend opinions mean a whole lot more to me than any talking head anywhere. I have a feeling a few more of the greats will come out of the woodwork in the near future - especially if Ben leaves and can't prop the team up.

I can't help but wonder what this guy thinks of the current state of affairs and "some" of the undisciplined players.

Anymore the blame for me goes right to the top....Mr. Rooney. As long as he is making his $$$$$ Tomlin will be safe. The Rooney's showed that it is all about $$$$$ to them after letting Goodell sweep spygate under the rug. A shame really.

Broken necks. Jack would body slam similar to Harris when he made fun of Roy, ONLY harder because it's more deserving.

Guys like Jack played this game for the love of it and the Steelers logo really meant something to them. Now I see ******* wanting a photo-op for a 1st down.

Maybe I'm just getting old and being too harsh on the new crop.

NOT at all, but it's the kid's parents thAT CREATED THEM. Country home / farm / ranch / agriculture / home grown / parents spent time with kids growing up / are what make sane responsible youth. A lot of these "athletes" have been told / given / entitled / everything in thier lives so why isn't it about them ? That's the culture that Coach Tomlin has to change and by being a "player's" coach, SOFT, it will never happen.

And that's the sad part. We've had talent on this team for years, but it just seems to blow apart. Somebody needs to tell them they're not special until they've earned it.

This legitimately could've been said about 3 or 4 different games this year. They may have a better record than some other years, but I think this may be the worst Steelers team I can remember watching.
