First-pick.com - 2021 - and so it begins.

No Trades. Went with a QB in 1st here because the one I like fell, plus I really like Boyd from Arkansas as a pounder on day 3. If the draft goes like these sims ( know, they rarely do), and guys like Radunz and Meinerz are available in rounds 2 and 3, then I'm all for taking a RB or QB in round 1. In reality, I expect a run on Olineman leading us to taking a plug and play T or C in round 1 out of fear that they will all be gone by our pick in round 2.

I hate making trades in this deal just because I know the Steelers seldom do. but getting a second to fall back 4 picks was to good to pass up. with this draft we would shore up both of our lines

Bold strategy, Cotton - taking a WR number 1. But Toney is a huge addition. Pair him with Claypool and watch teams decide whom to double. Also, the OL is upgraded by 2022 with Eichenberg, a true LT, Myers, probably the 3rd best true C in the draft, and Kraemer, a decent G prospect. The RB is like finding gold in the garage.

Also, I draft an ILB and DL every mock because the Steelers need help. Werner will be good. He is a solid run defender right now, and I think has more speed than Vince.

1.24 Christian Darrisaw OT Virginia Tech
2.55 Javonte Williams HB North Carolina
TRADE
Steelers get 3.98, 3.105
Saints get 3.87
3.98 Amon-Ra St. Brown WR USC
3.105 Tommy Tremble TE Notre Dame
4.128 Patrick Jones EDGE Pitt
4.140 Jaylen Twyman IDL Pitt
6.214 Trey Hill C Georgia
7.244 JaCoby Stevens S LSU
7.253 Olaijah Griffin CB USC

Darrisaw and Williams both fell, so I was pretty excited. There were a couple of players I liked at 87, including Brevin Jordan, but I felt with the trade down I could get two quality players. St. Brown is a great value at this point and Tremble may have been a bit of a reach, he just wasn't going to make it to my next pick. I think he'll be a good blocker and has untapped potential as a receiver.

Traded back again and again, never got a center though. Finney gets a year to prove he belongs/we draft one next year.

After signing Banner and Finney, it is possible that the steelers think they have their starting OL. It does drop OL just a bit from desperate need to upgrade if possible.

I think an edge rusher is a big need. Even if Highsmith continues to improve, you still need a good backup for a rotation. They really have nothing behind Watt and Highsmith.

This draft broke pretty well. Get a possible impact pass rusher and franchise OT then a versatile RB. Werner could be a perfect fit next to Bush. Rodgers can be a really good slot who can be dangerous on run after catch and jet sweeps. Fries has a lot of starts under his belt and could be a quality backup who can possibly backup G and T.

I really think the steelers need to sign a free agent TE. Somebody who can block. It would be great if they could get Jesse James back.

God I hope not. I think Banner can be an okay RT, but he has not played a full season at tackle since 2016. Finney is ... Finney.

I think an edge rusher is a big need.

Highsmith is a good player. Getting an elite pass rusher is always a huge priority for NFL teams. If a premium edge player is there at 24, I can understand the desire to help the secondary by getting a guy to pair with Watt and to go along with Heyward, Tuitt, Ruggs to pressure the QB.

But the very high talent available in this draft at two premium spots - QB and LT - makes me want the team to dedicate their resources there. Rarely does need match up so well with the BPA. In this draft, it does.

Ditto on thinking the Oline is anywhere near set. It needs a C and a LT. Interesting that a pass rusher is in the convo. We have seen many many convos on the site and in the mock drafts about a T or RB going in one. But if the BPA in 1 is clearly a pass rusher? What if Rousseau falls? ... What if Trask is sitting there at 24? Do the Steelers trade up in 2 for Williams or Gainwell? What if Cisco falls to 3? I could go on and on and on. The Covid opt out element brings an interesting twist to this draft. Players potential to be there in any given round that on normal years have no business of being available. I recognize the Steelers biggest need is T/RB/C but let BPA guide the way in a draft that is sure to have more than its share of surprises.

Quick examples of Trask's accuracy.

I like his ability to read defenses. It is an underrated talk about with QBs now. People want the flash and dash. But give me accuracy and the ability to read a defense. Because when those wheels tread it always comes down to but how much of a pocket passer can they be.

Did a mock in the draft network. Trey lance was there at 1.24, couldn't pass on him, ended getting OT leatherwood in the 2nd round, gainwell RB in the 3rd and Hill C in the 4th.

Not ideal for this season but Lance is a potential franchise QB

I'd love that draft, slash.

Yeah probably my favorite. I liked Cos from the beginning before I dug deep into the draft. Just an athletic specimen. Easily a ten year starter. You get that guy in the draft your left side becomes mighty attractive. Molden would upgrade Hilton. Hill is a future starter maybe even by midseason. Needs a little early reps making sure he has the snaps down. But yeah that draft would go a long ways to answering some question marks.

cosmi is an interesting prospect in terms of style. He's a great athlete and pass blocker but not a road grader. The steelers have claimed they want to be more physical. If that's true then Cosmi is probably not the guy they want.

It's tough to pin down what Canada wants in his OL. He has adapted his scheme to the big guys at Wisconsin and to quicker guys at other stops. If he gets his say, what style does he want and does he even care? Some of these young OC's give the OL little thought and just assume that their scheme can create rush lanes and their QB can get rid of the ball before a pass rush arrives.

I am assuming that the steelers will draft players to fit Canada's scheme so his opinion will carry weight. When it comes to OL, does he have a preference, or does he just say get me anybody good and i'll adjust around him?

In my mocks, i generally skip over Cosmi assuming they will want a tougher player with all their public statements about rebuilding the run game

i dont mind them taking a shot at Qb high... if they dont I wouldn’t mind a development sleeper type taken late... Davis Mills is a guy that has been blowing up since his pro day... pretty much a one year starter but once the top high school prospect.. heard several national sports talk shows say he was the best or one of the best pro days they’d ever seen

rumor has it San Fran is thinking of him as a potential future starter... he was supposed to be a udfa or seventh but my guess is he will go in the sixth or maybe fifth now,...

hed be a much bigger gamble than trask but for far less capital, and again in most qb classes there is that mystery guy that climbs into the top two rounds after a really great show at the combine... this kid probably would have been it....

This year has the potential to have massive steals especially since so many teams still skimp on internal scouting... if they pass on the low 1st high 2nd guys this kids is worth a shot later

Tough player won't necessarily be able to pull or handle speed rushers. LT you want someone athletic and it doesn't get any better than Cos athletically.

Definitely should be some steals. No combine, opt outs. It will put more emphasis on game tapes. Some scouting departments are good at it, some not so much. This year will test the skills even of the best of the best. Some talent will fall, some will reach on said prospect. Hopefully we aren't in the reaching aspect of it.

IMO, until we trade Nelson, maybe we don't take a CB early. as such...

I wouldn't worry about that too much. Athleticism and 40 time, believe it or not, translates very well for tackle prospects as they move into the NFL. After his tests, he may not even make it to the Steelers.

i'm not arguing against Cosmi, just pointing out that he may not be the type of guy they are now looking at. I think they like Banner as a RT. How much do they like Chukes at LT? Personally, i think they'd be crazy to pass up a quality OT because of Chukes and Banner but that doesn't mean it won't happen.

I would love to get Alijah Vera-Tucker in round 1 and then an OT in round 2. Vera Tucker could possibly play all 5 positions. He'll be a stud at G or C. either he learns C or move Decastro to C. I'd like to see Decastro at C.

I'll say again that i will not be happy if they take a RB in round 1. I think you can make a case for Etienne because he may be able to bring a Kamara like element but even so, you can get good RBs later and i can't see drafting one in RD 1 ahead of OL, edge rusher, 3 down ILB, CB, or even TE with Freiermuth.
