Flores going to the Vikings

So in regard to the coaching tree thing… Coaches do often have several “parent” coaches listed, but typically this ends when they first get a head coaching position… so if lets say someone had hired Munch off of the staff to be a head coach while he was here, he would not show up on a Mike Tomlin coaching tree because he previously had a Head Coaching job in the NFL…. But if Matt Canada got hired as a head coach, he would be on the tree…

Pete Carroll is a good example… go to one of those nfl history sites and he will have several “parent coaches listed on a coaching tree breakdown because he was an assistant coach for several head coaches before becoming a head coach while a DC Bruce Coslett (actually replacing him iirc)
… but if the site is correctly applying the coaching tree logic the nfl uses, george Siefert won’t be on there. After being terminated by the Jets, Carroll worked as a DC for the 49rs before getting another HC gig… but that doesn’t count even though it refurbished his career going there

Willing to bet that next season the Vikings’ D finishes ahead of the Steelers’ D in most statistical categories.

Tomlin wasn't using him properly.

Once you have been a head coach in the nfl, you simply should never be associated with another coaching tree… you are your own guy
That's not true, a bunch of the great coaches came from great coaches before them and they learn things along the way. There's a reason it's a "tree".

I do believe that Tomlin's "branch" on the tree has born no fruit. Or any leaves. In fact, it's just a scraggly dead twig.

While I hate belichick with the heat of a thousand suns, he is a branch of the Parcell's coaching tree.

True, The cheating ******* has produced his own sub-branches, but those all go back ultimately to Bill Parcells.

Imo, of course.

Steelers were the only team with enough professionalism and courage that would even touch him last off season!

Dont let the door hit ya in the ***...

History tells me I can’t argue with this.

I hope to be wrong.

Tomlin isn't known for creativity nor innovation, but at least he NHALS.

Shall be interesting Ron. They were ranked 28th and lower in defensive categories. Would be quite the resurgence.
Perhaps they start it off by signing Devin Bush to a multi year contract 🙂

I’m going to be one of those guys that says it’s actually quite hard to judge the impact Flores made on this team in one season. Simply because of our schedule.

I think the defense from the year before would pretty well have done the same thing. We had an incredibly easy schedule, let’s face it.....our offense I think scored over 25 points twice? If we would have had any normal offense at all ,in all likelihood we would have lost only 3-4 games. We had an extremely easy schedule. Go look at who we played. And the QB’s that we faced.

The only QB’s we faced this year at all, Eagles,Bills And Bengals. 35,38,37 points against. And we all know the first Cincinnati game Burrows had 5 turnovers and still managed over 420 yds of offense. So as usual generally when we play a team with a good offense our defense falters. This year was no exception. As were the last 3 playoff games with 40+ scored against in each.

This isn’t to say I wanted to let Flores go. We statistically improved from 20th in points allowed to 10th in 2022. We are a good defense. I’m sure some of the credit should go to Tomlin and Austin as well. We all know you can only play who’s on your schedule. But I really feel the weakness of schedule and the QB’s we faced kind of made it hard to judge our D this year.

We keep Canada and lose Flores...************.

I always viewed coaching trees as up and coming coaches who established themselves under a head coach. I agree that former head coaches are not a part of a coaching tree. Recycled coordinators shouldn't be either (Austin or Canada) as they already proved themselves elsewhere.

I'll take that bet!

For the rest of us, Flores was a 1 year rental and we knew it. It's a false association saying Flores should be here instead of Canada. Flores is more defensively minded. Sucks that we didn't get picks, but it doesn't mean we made a mistake. We gave Flores an opportunity to stay in the league, and the rules suck to add draft picks to the Rooney Rule, so we feel that we missed out on something.

I'm happy he has a job. He's a great coach and i know he thanks Tomlin and the Steelers for making a coaching position just to have him for a year.

Matt Canada was a college OC… never an NFL OC before… and they are drastically different from the NFL, so im pretty certain everyone who lists coaching trees would put him on it… Austin too because they always include the guys you were an OC or DC under in those…

Tomlin has one Branch on his coaching tree … Bruce Arians… who was brought in by Bill Cowher after failing as an OC in Cleveland… and Tomlin more or less forced Arians out, and he really only got a head coach chance because of a medical emergency in indy… yet he shows up if you go to any list of Tomlin's coaching tree… all by his lonesome

They would have done better to put Austin back in his old job and make Flores our DC.
The usual bet?

Because their decision making has been so solid as of late? Flores made an impact per player reports. That is more than we can say for Canada. Nothing Canada has done in his entire career screams the right move.

Then Bill Parcells has no coaching tree?

It's not Canada or flores. It was austin vs flores, move austin to another title job and give flores the DC spot.

Canada is a whole other conversation

I think you're misunderstanding why we're all dumbfounded.
Nobody here thinks Canada should have been fired and Flores should have been promoted to OC.
We're just trying to wrap our heads around the logic from II & Tomlin........which is unpossible.
In our utopia, Tomlin and Austin are gone, and Flores is still here.
But we all know Tomlin ain't going anywhere until he wants.
But at least Austin should have been fired and Flores could be our DC since he didn't take a HC job anywhere.
Flores was only a rental because our braintrust is retarded.
Could have flipped Austin and Flores' roles and that would have been cool, too.

You go with the best man for the job and I would think most would have went with Flores over Austin. They owed Austin nothing. Their "Steeler way" is outdated.

I can see other Franchises looking at us and just praying for that Coach Tomlin extension………….

Then Bill Parcells has no coaching tree?
I'm not going to go over each coach because I don't care enough, but his best branch is Bill Belichick who coached linebackers and then got his first DC job under Parcells

I'm trying to figure out what Austin has done in these scenarios to get fired? Led the league in INTs. 22 personnel alignments this season, incredible week 1 game plan, and great game plan vs Tom Brady when our entire secondary was injured. Lost his top defender and still had us competitive in games, then improved tremendously past the bye.

I understand wanting Flores over Austin, but outside of Madden Football, firing a guy that is doing a good job as a DC, isn't a good idea. I think Co-DCs could have been an option, but we've never done that as a franchise.
