Huge raise but all and all, the STEELERS will work a long term and friendly market value.

Edge rusher franchise will be more than he should get in guarenteed money. No thanks. But nice that he is tipping his hand. Tough to figure out his value. I wouldn't go beyond 7 per year. He has been pretty durable I will give him that so a fair guarenteed amount is fine. I think the have to find a market between a decent player and very good. That is where he falls in my opinion.

Isn't he making $9M THIS year under the 5th year option? I mean, I understand how folks would like to get a home town discount, but $7M a year ain't happening. Even with this year being his one "good" year as some would say.

Dude is balling out, and people still can't give him any credit. If you think this is ONLY because of a contract year, you haven't been paying attention. He has improved each year, people are just so stuck on Jarvis Jones that Bud will never get credit because he didn't come out blazing hot like TJ. He was going to be somewhat of a project from the start, but his freakish athletic ability has always been apparent.

People want to go by sacks so last year I think he had 6 or 6.5 sacks. now ADD IN THE SAFTEY he had, better than a sack. Now add in the 3 holding penalties the OL committed onto him, AVERAGE sack is 8 yard loss, HOLDING penalty is as good as a sack as well.......... THESE are the things some don't think matter when in actuality, they do. Bud will garner 8-10mil base pay with about 2-3mil incentives.

I have no idea what hte market value for edge rushers this year will be...I have no idea who is coming up on FA around the league, who is going to retired or what the draft looks like which all influence the market. What I do know is the guy was a known project coming out of school and developed slower than desired for various reasons stated many times here. I do not think the contract year had anything to do with the light suddenly coming of for him. It came on because for the first time in a long time he has been allowed to play in and master one position. If the cat hits the market, someone is going to pay him some big bones. I don't know how many, but his position is usually in demand and his needle is steadily going up.

Holding is not as good as a sack because if you accept the penalty then they don't lose the down. With a sack you lose almost as many yards and the down.

Dupree is going to be one of the more interesting Steelers players in recent memory.

He did not do much of anything for his first several years, but suddenly looks like a star just in time to hit free agency.

I'd rather give the money to Watt and Fitzpatrick in terms of the bigger picture, but that's just me.

He has a few gift sacks a few legitimate sacks and he has played against some of the worst teams in the league. I would let him go, better, younger players are due huge contracts soon and paying too much for a middling talent like DuPree hinders a team that will be u against the cap sson after signing Watt and JuJu to long term deals among others.

So he's had half a season of good out of 5. I'd maybe use the tag if he blows it up the rest of the year. Trust me i want him to do well all the time. It helps the team win.

Dupree knows how sweet of a deal the franchise tag would be for him.

Exactly. Franchise tag is way more than he's worth at this point.
I'm okay with tagging him because 1) I want to see if he can ball for two years in a row and 2) we're only on the hook for his salary for one year.
You'd have to be a ******* fool to give Durpee a multi-year deal for big money based on one decent season.

You forgot Jason Worilds.

Dude is lightning quick, he & TJ are great friends, competitors, & are studs as bookends on a fast improving D....

Or option three they give him a multi year deal that is a raise but less than the tag and less than a perceived big contract. I could see the Steelers picking the tag though. As with his improvement and the fact replacing him in free agency could very well even be pricier. They go for the safe option. Unless Dupree's agent isn't trying to break the bank.

He better not. The Steelers ought to remember how it worked out with Woodley, Worilds, and Jones.

AGrEE but the reason they held him was because inevitably he would more than likely get a sack. Potatoe Potata

I'm not saying break the bank for him either but as said, replacement cost? I'm thinking base pay 8-10mil with 2-3mil incentive and signing bonus to entice this. 3-4 year deal with optional year.

Maybe so. But the 9 he got was a gift. I'm interested what you think he should get. Think about it this way
Who has been a better pro for the entire career. Bud or Sean Davis? Davis is done with the team. He wont be getting 7m per year. Why is Bud worth more?

The going rate for some of Bud's buddies in an article I recently read was closer to the 12 to 15 million range. If we could keep him for 8-10 million per, I think that would be a steal based on his play this year. But, I'm guessing it's going to take 12+ million per to get it done. The transition tag is 13+ million and the franchise tag is 15+ or something like that so his agent may want to be near the top of that range.

I'm not saying he isn't worth a good contract but I'm saying he will be offered more in free agency, let's take a look at the numbers:

1. currently TJ Watt is in his rookie contract's 3th year so in two years he would be in his 5th year option which will be someting like 9-10 millions, then he becomes an UFA, If someone is a must-resign-player is TJ WATT, he should be priority #1 for the front office.

2. Let's see the OLB top salaries around the league:

3. Now let's look at the sack leaders:

4. Back to Dupree, he is top 20 in sacks with a very nice tackle production which would put him in the top 12 to 20 range in the free agent market, say 8 to 12 million dollars between kiko alonso and preston brown contract, probably closer to 12M as Bud still is young, his best years are yet to come.

5. Now if you give that money to Bud, how much will Watt earn? to me he will get something similar to Chandler Jones, maybe get some discount if re-signed before using the 5th year option as leverage. Signing both would mean the FO are allocating 25-30M to OLBs in 2021.

6. You wonder how the team is in cap space? we are dead last with 1M available, no wonder they haven't brought any free agent RB. Next year you ask? ok we have an estimated cap space of 6 millions only, cutting Barron and Chickillo opens up 10 millions, another option to open cap space would be to cut McDonald who has a dead cap of 1.5M and would save 5,5M more (a contract extension lowering his cap hit would be a better option).

Resigning Bud to a 10M/Y contract the team needs to cut Chick (fine by me) and/or Barron (yeap, no problem), leaving 16M in cap space. They can structure the contract to have a low impact in the first season, something like they did with DeCastro who earns an avg salary of 10M in a 5 years contract but the first year cap was less than 6M, so to sum up:

Steelers can offer a 4 years, 40 Millions with a first year (2020) cap hit of 6,5M leaving 10M available to try to re-sign Javon Hargrave, sign the rookie class and complete the roster.

7. Keep in mind that in 2021 Juju becomes an UFA, Heyward, Villanueva and Joe Haden too, also TJ Watt's new monster contract would be in the books and Fitzpatrick enters his 5th year option

So it can be done but it won't be easy or cheap.

If they sign Bud, I see no way they sign Hargrave. And, Bud has now become more valuable to the team than Hargrave so, Bud would be priority 1 between the 2 where prior to the season, I think many had that switched. Bud has become such a disrupting force opposite of Watt, it would be great to somehow be able to keep them together. They will sign JuJu. Not sure on Cam or Villaneuva getting another big contract from us but maybe. And I doubt Haden will get resigned. He signed this offseason and has been steady but not as good as previous years. He's either lost a half step or is battling through an injury. Now that they have Fitzpatrick and Edmunds at safety, I don't see Haden sliding to safety in his twilight years as many thought he might.

Keep in mind, it seems a lot of recent contracts were tied to the timeframe of Ben's contract. When Ben retires, there will be more than a few others leaving as well. Pouncey will almost definitely be one of them.
