Game Balls, Game Goats & FU's....................vs Colts

The o-line does not get a game ball! Running the ball is still a part of football. Teams don’t win many games when they are totally inept at running the ball. Until the o-line can figure that out, the Steelers will have to defy the odds to win games.

And if Connor can stay healthy. I am not sold on Snell and I don't think I'll ever be. McFarland is simply a change of pace back at this point. Connor is the only RB on this roster that can we can rely on to tote the rock consistently if we were ever to establish a viable running game.

Ben wasn't great in the first half but he certainly didn't stink up the joint. He was told to call those BS short throws of 0 to 5 yards and they just didn't work. So, you have terrible play calls. Terrible clock management by the coaches. There was a drop or two. An errant pass or two. No running game. No blocking. Etc. No way you can blame that first half on Ben. He didn't light anything up because he was either throwing the ball at the line or throwing it deep. Nothing in between. Diontae ran the wrong route twice. So.....

If they continue to mix in intermediate and longer passes into the mix, the running game will miraculously improve.

It was amazing how everything opened up when Ben started going down the field.

It was amazing how everything opened up when Ben started going down the field.

He wasn't even looking down field. His first reads were within 5 yards of the line on almost every play. When they started letting him open up the field and look around, everything opened up, even a tiny running game.

The thing about McFarland that I have noticed was his footwork. He has very disciplined footwork. The Cincy game was more obvious to me. He took what was given to him and made the best of it. The kid needs a few more snaps a game to get his timing down and understand what the line will give him. If the offense can keep up with the intermediate and deep routes, there will be more opportunities for McFarland to make more of an impact. The Snell loss of yardage yesterday was a victim of Big Al being more of a turn style. The backer for Indy was already up Snell’s ***.

Great write up. I tip my hat to Alex Highsmith. The kid is starting to get comfortable. He was disruptive enough to cause key Rivers turnovers and throw too early. I think the arrow definitely points up on this young man.

Mike Hilton. This guy is going to get paid.
56 is definitely starting to get it. Its good to see what we have now because Bud is gone. He helped cause the INT in addition to the bad throw on the last play of the game.

The biggest thing to me was, how open Indys pass catchers were wide open for 3 quarters, and our pass catchers were blanketed most of the day. Rivers didn't have to complete hardly any difficult throws, and alot that was scheme, something we don't do on offense. One play ebron and juju were 2 yards apart on a throw.

Play Ben so he stays in synch dress grey for decastro he needs a full week of rust looks finished

I was cussing the screen as the time just kept ticking away

Sometimes I CUSS the screen even when the clock isn't ticking............

High smith will develope faster than BUD DUPREE did, not take 3-4 years to turn on the light switch.

Salute the nation

I suppose they'll add that to support the argument out there that Ben is not an "elite" QB.

Um, OK.

Ben certainly did "stink up the joint" in the first half. He was 11/20 for 98 yards. 55% completions and less than 5 yards per attempt. Take away that bullshit stat-padding 22 yarder to JuJu at the end of the half (which, btw...Ben can't throw it to the end zone from the 40 yard line? What? Great play call), and here's what you have:

10/19 for 76 yards. 62.6 rating.

Ben sucked right out of the gate with 3 ****** passes on the first drive. He "led" the team to 4 more 3-and-outs on 7 total possessions; the only touchdown the Steelers scored was thanks to the defense setting them up on the 3 yard line (and they still needed an offsides penalty, or they would have had to kick a field goal). He could have easily had at least one interception. I don't know what "throwing it deep" you saw, except for one pathetically underthrown ball to DJ on third down that wasn't even close.

Stop making excuses for the guy. It's embarrassing.

There were a couple drops as others actually pointed out to me. The play calling was idiotic to keep throwing 1 yard passes. Once Ben got control in the no huddle, they had little problem. Even on the drive to start the 2nd half where they marched right down and didn't score, you had an obvious hold on Ebron in the endzone otherwise that might have been a TD and then he hit Claypool in the hands and he dropped what would have been a TD. Even Claypool was visibly pissed he didn't hold onto it. So......I mean you aren't going to get much more than 100 yards passing in a half when you throw 1 yard passes with 9+ men in the box waiting for it.

Williamson had nice game too. Great freaking addition.

Only one FU and this goes to me. I never seen such a pathetic half of football. At 2: 30 no way I thought we would win this game. I truly watched in misbelief as Ben threw all those TD;s and the defense stepped up, How many other had one thought we would win this game, late in the third quarter. Congrats to the Steelers and Steeler Nation to adore these last few games.

I'm not talking about the second half. There were no drops in the first half. Let's break down Ben's play by possession:

1) Three poor short passes. Maybe one to JuJu had at least a 50% chance of being caught.
2) Three short completions to DJ. 3rd-and-1 (more like a half yard), run play is stuffed. Evidently, despite being 6'5" and 240+, Ben remains incapable of running a QB sneak.
3) Sacked on 2nd down. Completes a hopeless pass to Ebron five yards downfield, no chance for a first down.
4) Ball on Colts' 3, 2nd down slant to DJ is behind him, thus easily defended. 3rd down pass behind an open JuJu, bailed out by offside penalty, not an official incompletion.
5) Has a WIDE open McCloud in the flat, instead forces to Ebron in triple-coverage, should have been picked. Completes hopeless pass at LOS to DJ on 3rd-and-9.
6) 5-yard pass to DJ. 2-yard pass to JuJu, got first down. 5-yard pass to JuJu. Pass behind LOS to Conner, first down. Tipped ball. Incompletion in between Ebron and JuJu 10 yards down the field, hard to tell for whom it was intended. Aforementioned DJ pass falls 5 yards short.
7) Deep ball to DJ nowhere close, Ben of course gestures that it's DJ's fault on the route. Throws his one and only nice pass of the half after stepping up in the pocket, 17 yards to JuJu. Then the useless stat-padder 22 yards to JuJu to end the half, instead of giving Claypool a shot in the endzone.

So essentially, he made one nice throw beyond 5 yards from the line of scrimmage the entire half. He's incapable or unwilling to sneak the football in short yardage, despite how badly the running game was/is struggling in those situations. He ignores a guy with no defender around him within 15 yards and almost throws an INT into heavy coverage. He couldn't hit two different receivers from the 2-yard with an accurate pass. He threw short twice on 3rd-and-long, both at least 9 yards from the first down marker and covered, essentially conceding 4th down and a punt.

Did I miss anything?

This team hasn't scored A SINGLE FIRST QUARTER POINT on offense in their last EIGHT games. You're right -- the play calling was idiotic. If Ben indeed called the plays in the second half, great, kick Sphincter to the curb, and let Ben run the offense from play one. He's obviously more comfortable in the no-huddle, let him run that too. If they rest starters against the Browns, let Ben coordinate. They have to change something, because this trend of going entire quarters and halves with next to nothing from the offense is untenable.

You forgot the terrible non use of a TO on 3rd and 16 backed up against the EZ that cost our last possession of the half 45 seconds. See, I'd agree on this one being terrible ;)

This is an exclusive first half Ben rant, Cope. Remember, he got my game ball for the second half. :calm:

Did any member of the press ask Tomlin why he decided not to call timeout there?

Others on here thought one or two of those early throws were drops. So, you are in disagreement with many. When I said Ben made bad throws, I was told otherwise during the game thread.

I doubt it. The Pittsburgh media aside from Madden doesn't ask such questions.

I could understand not calling it if they were closer to FG range, but they were backed up to our EZ on a 3rd and long. You always call the TO there because situationally, it's the right call.

No one called him out after the game, but someone may today.

Madden doesn’t go to the locker rooms or games so how is he asking any of these questions?

The minute he steps in that locker room he will become just a guy. They might not even give him the time of day-plus there are guys he’s talked **** on that may confront him. He would just turn into a pile of kiss *** to them. He likes to throw stones at the glass house, he’s afraid to be in the glass house after casting his own stones.

You know how this superstition thing works.

I had to drive 2 1/2 hours to visit an old friend who was in-state for the holiday. As such, I was unable to watch the game. Honestly, I simply assumed missing the game would be better for my blood pressure and mood anyway. So, apparently I'm the new Lynn. However, keep in mind, you won't want me cooking.
