Good article

Coolie,

I honestly didn't intend this as a "fire Tomlin" thread, but a "the media is beginning to shift quickly on Tomlin" thread.

Still, I want him gone.

Also, I wanted to thank you for breathing new life into this thread. Interesting the responses you got.

how many fire tomlin threads do we ******* need

Pending on thursday's outcome........................................... 3,419 more.

Salute the nation

ZonaBurg said it, Tomlin isn't going anywhere for at least another year even if we lose out. Not only does he have the quarantined contract but our owner doesn't have the balls. The national media will howell, how can you fire a hall of fame head coach just because he has his first losing season? Art Rooney ll father is rolling in his grave and so on.

The real question should be will his contract be extended and I'm afraid I already have the answer.
The media doesn't seem to have a problem with Belichick getting canned, and he's won a lot more for a lot longer than Tomlin.

Another good article from the Post. Talks about how ESPN and others just follow the same narratives while not really having a clue.

Yeah, there's some good points in there. I copied a few and the last one below (in my opinion like some others on here) is where it matters.

"Tomlin’s career in Pittsburgh can really be divided into two careers. Actually, one that consists of his first four seasons and one that consists of the last 12+ seasons. The first five seasons, he was Bill Walsh. These last 11+ seasons, he has been somewhere between Marvin Lewis and Marty Schottenheimer. And the problem the Eisens of the world have is their entire argument is built as if we are supposed to focus on his first five seasons and act like the last 11 didn’t exist or are better than they actually were."

"Still, Tomlin deserves all the credit in the world for how elite the Steelers were in those early years. The problem is the Tomlin that these national pundits want so badly to continue romanticizing about. But to do that, they need to ignore that in the last 12+ seasons they have won three playoff games, they have missed the playoffs (five times) almost as many times as they have made the playoffs (seven times), and they have only won four division titles."

"Tomlin is 3-8 in his last 11 playoff games, and while he has “never had a losing season,” he actually has — the postseason, where he is 8-9."

Let me just preface this by saying I want Mike Tomlin gone.

But man, look around the league. I know we are so focused on the Steelers, but how do you explain Jacksonville last night? That's a pretty bad loss to a backup QB at home. Or Philly? I know San Fran is good, but it wasn't even that competitive a game...at home. The Bills. I've been saying it for a while, but this year seems more than ever. There might be a couple of great coaches, but it seems like today more than ever it's which coach is lucky enough for most of the year to keep his collection of 14 year old heads focused enough to win more than they lose. It's really a bad league with some bad football. And I think it's not lack of talent causing it...it's lack of any kind of long term focus and team mentality.
I'd take Sirianni from the Eagles in a second. Yes, they had a poor game at home against San Fran (I seem to remember the Steelers doing the same in week one), but they just don't match up well at all against the Niners. The bookies knew it -- that's why an 8-3 team was favored by 3 points on the road against a 10-1 opponent.

Think about the Steelers/Cardinals line. You had a 7-4 team, at home, against a 2-10 team, and they were only 3.5-point favorites at the beginning of the week, before all the dummies came in and bet Pittsburgh, and bumped the line up to 6. So basically, they had them practically even with the 3 points for home field. And Arizona showed why.

Isn't that completely crazy?13 appearances in the AFC Championship Game, and nine Super Bowl appearances, with six superbowl wins.

I’ve always like Tomlin. Just like I’ve always liked Noll and I’ve always liked Cowher. But coaches do get stale. Noll and Cowher I think saw that in themselves, and they got out. I think Tomlin is smart enough to see that too, and he just may want to retire one of these years. I think over the years the Steelers have had three really good coaches. That’s why we should be careful what we wish for, because the law of averages says we’re due for a real dud.

Nah. Mike Tomlin is smart enough, however, to know that a 9-8 record is adequate to allow him to continue cashing his ridiculous paychecks. 12.5 million dollars. That's what this fraud is "earning" this season. Mind-boggling.

Maybe, but he's young and making millions, so why should he lay back and retire? I agree that the dud thing could happen, and I don't generally dislike Tomlin as a person, except that he seems stubborn and refuses to acknowledge something is wrong with coaching and game planning, and in-game decisions. He's quick to say "we acknowledge" stuff in pressers, but it's back to the same crap next Sunday.

I saw a vid the other day of him saying (basically gloating) he doesn't care what people think. It was somewhat older and I can't remember where I saw it, so no link. I get you have to have thick skin in this business, but it just kind of put me off and it's tiring. (My post isn't meant to sound mean-spirited toward you)

Yeah, I'd take Sirianni too. My point is that as good as he is, he is still beholding to the various whims and attitudes of his players at any particular time. This is a 10-2 football team with a heck of a good young QB and you have an idiot WR (Brown) throwing his hands in the air if he doesn't approve of where or to who the ball is thrown. I just think it is getting worse and worse, which is why you may not ever see a "dynasty" type team ever again.

I don't disagree with you, but AJ Brown is one of the best receivers in the NFL. Not saying that he should pontificate on the field every time he doesn't get the ball, but he's earned enough stripes to voice his opinion. What have DJ and George Pickens accomplished?
