Regardless the D has been on the field a lot. I think we were leading the league in 3-n-outs at one point. The one game we had a 92yrd drive and still managed only 80 yrds of offense part way through the 3rd quarter. That is near impossible in todays NFL. I have no idea what the stats out, but lets say our defense defends 80 plays / game and other defenses defend 70 plays / game. Even if the plays only gain 3 yrds / play that comes out to another 30 yrds / game given up. The defense has kept us alive this year and w/o it we could possibly have no wins. Our stats are also a little skewed by the blowout losses.
Yea, look, I'm not gonna argue that our pathetic, listless, anemic offense isn't hurting the D effort and results; of course constantly going 3 and out the abhorrent offense in general cripples the D. How couldn't it? All I'm saying is that the D isn't completely blameless 100%. Sure, if we had some semblance of an offense, say, like top 20 even the D stats would be better. If we had a top 15 O, the D could be well respectable. But the D isn't iron clad all things considered.
From front to back, the front 3,4 isn't overwhelming. Sure, Cam being out has hurt the efforts of the DL, Larry O has upheld is own. Benton is a good looking rookie (a rookie who - insert broken record here - who should have gotten more playing time earlier this season). But - and this is a common theme with Shades - the team doesn't seem to recall the job of what the DL is in a 3-4 D. You want 3 strong as hell men up there, sacks don't matter, let the LBs get them. The DL is to stop the rush and not allow the OGs/C to get to the LBs. If you lack a DL who can't get that job done, you suffer on stopping the rush and then things like safeties are in on too many rushing tackles. I've heard more than one former NFL defender say that f your safety is leading your team in tackles, you have problems. Well, Fitz is. Then our two ILBs are next in tackles but you have to go all the way down to 9th to find a DL's tackle stats. (Larry O).
Speaking of ILBs, ours have improved some but now Holcomb is out for the year; he was just stating to get in a groove. But no one is arguing that are CBs are solid. JPJ has proven to be a nice draft pick but the rest of our CBs are pretty weak. We will be drafting a CB pretty high next spring.
Our pathetic offense does indeed hinder the D, without question. But we are going to have to upgrade the D in spots next offseason as well. We need a NT, DE, MLB, CB and another S. That's a lot of dudes.
