Initial Thoughts on Texan Game

Tomlin gives up lots of points in the 4th quarter.

Texan turn the ball over 3 times and still win. 3 turnovers kills most teams.

I honestly thought they'd squeak out a close win (until the 4th quarter).
It's a good thing I don't care as much as I used to.
At least my season prediction was spot-on again.
Same ol' same ol'......

To me, it never felt like the Steelers had much of a chance, despite the score being 7-6 for the longest time.

The Texans defense was that dominant, and people who are dead set on wanting an offensive coach to eventually replace Tomlin should pay attention to what what Demeco Ryans is doing with the Texans, as well as Mike McDonald with the Seahawks.

The Steelers rely too much on yards after the catch in the passing game and the Texans probably have the best tackling secondary in the league.

All those throws in the flat to Gainwell and Jonnu that resulted in 5-10 yards much of the season were getting completely shutdown by the Texans.

5) Please God, let there be some how, some way that MT is not offered yet another contract extension. I'm begging you.

The 2027 option could make things interesting, as one would assume it was agreed to in Tomlin's contract for a reason.

Hard to see him going into next season with no financial commitment beyond that.

It's not good business for either side, considering Tomlin has other options.

The defeat marked the Steelers' fourth straight home playoff loss, the first time that has ever happened in franchise history, and extended Mike Tomlin's postseason losing streak to seven games -- tying Marvin Lewis for the longest by a head coach in NFL history. Pittsburgh has now gone one-and-done in the playoffs three straight seasons and five times over the past six years. It hasn't won a postseason game since the 2017 season, when Ben Roethlisberger was still under center.

2026 FIRE TOMLIN. There, I added it.

We got, what, three turnovers and still never scored a TD?
Doesn't help Smith's chances of getting a HC gig.

Fine, let him.
Deuce's problem is that right now he knows what he has (never a losing season) and he's deathly afraid of hiring a new HC who won't be as good.

I'm not sure what the offense could have done when half your line is getting trucked every play. The one thing I would have changed is just go run heavy. We were constantly way behind the sticks. Run run pass might have been the strategy this game to avoid all the 3rd and 10+s. Even if we got to 3rd and 5 or 6 we would have had a fighting chance to convert. On defense the score looked good, but didn't really tell the story. Stroud tried to hand us the game. You can give credit to the D a little, but not catching snaps or early snaps were not caused by our D. We could not stop the run and Kirk stole Echols lunch money. We certainly did not adjust to kirk beating us constantly. Should be the end of Tomlin but it won't be. At minimum Austin should be gone and I'm still not a Meyer fan. I'm on the fence about Smith but would not be upset if he left or stayed.

This was the inevitable end to the season when they went with DK and Austin, then nobody else at WR.

Wilson either stinks or Tomlin put him in a doghouse and won't ever let him out.

Austin is ONLY a slot guy. He's too short to play outside. Steve Smith was able to be short and play outside but he played like an animal. Austin is short and weak.

The offense has 2 guys who can get open, Metcalf and Freiermuth and they refuse to throw to Freiermuth.

Jonuu Smith made sense to sign. It made sense to keep trying to get him the ball in the first half of the season. Continuing to force feed Smith past week 10, when it was obvious he has no grasp of this offense, was crazy.

The steelers passing game is like a bunch of kids who wander off at a mall and Rodgers has to go find them.

Friermuth should have led this team in targets. DK is a big play WR and should have led them in yards as he did but they just wasted so many targets for guys with no upside.

The Good News

This OL could be elite next year. We should be set at C, RG and RT. Cook is serviceable at LT but you can upgrade. Same with Seumalu at LG.

The DL could also be elite. They hit on Harmon and Black. Heyward can still play at a high level even if his reps need to be reduced.

Porter is one of the best CBs in the league.

Ramsey could be a good safety moving forward as he gets more experience there.

DK is a good WR so long as he's not the only one. Sign or draft a good WR or 2 and the offense could take off.

This year was house money, a rebuild year. They've had 2 great offseasons in a row. Another strong draft and this team could take off.
This is insanity and you come off as delusional, quite frankly. Firstly, with Tomlin as the coach this team is only “taking off” to another Tomlinship where they get completely embarrassed in the playoffs YET AGAIN. And that’s the BEST case scenario.

Secondly, this supposed “elite” defensive line was completely manhandled by the Texans. Go rewatch the first half in particular. They were blown off the line repeatedly. The Texans could’ve and should’ve run every play and instead of the final score being 30-6 it would’ve been 44-0 or something. I could go on and on.

Honestly, fans like yourself are why Tomlin is still here, or at least part of the reason. You are Charlie Brown. Tomlin and the Steelers are Lucy. But keep trying to kick that football man.

Handing the ball to Warren only five times is perhaps the most inexplicable aspect of the game plan.

That and targeting Freiermuth only three times are difficult to justify.

If they're not going to utilize their best RB and TE when they have next to nothing behind Metcalf at WR, why bother giving Warren and Freiermuth the contracts they did?

It's almost like there is a disconnect between the coaching staff and front office in terms of the contracts being given and how the players are actually valued in the offense.

Rebuild by signing and extending a bunch of old guys? They have a few nice young pieces but need to tear it down to the studs.

The Slappin' Tomlins are really tough against BAD teams like the Rats. Against quality competition, not so much.

How much draft capital has been invested in this OL? Two #1 picks and a 2nd, plus high dollar FA Seumala, who was getting TRUCKED all night long. And Jones, who was teetering on the bust bubble anyway, may not play another down in the NFL.

Still no plan, no identity, no future for this franchise. Sadly, Rooney will use making the play offs as justification to not move The Fraud out of town.

You've just witnessed the high-water mark for this franchise for the foreseeable future.

The playoff game was still in question after the first quarter….they were in the game until halftime

That’s a marked improvement over past Tomlin playoff appearances

And Metcalf sucks
Dude only catches 60% of his targets
So essentially they have no WR1

Just 1 overpaid WR2
And the aforementioned RB and TE that aren’t being used

It’s really another level of stupid how they’ve created this roster, a level of stupid smack dab in the image of the coach

Rushing four most of the night and it looked far more disruptive than when we rush 5-6

An indictment on the entire LOS and every coach on the team for not adjusting

I get BJ and Washington were out, do the coaches understand that? Cook uncorked an awful game, Isaac was abysmal, Troy was pretty damn awful.
Frazier and McCormick were harder to grade because the QB was already being assaulted before they were 1 second into their blocking

I can not believe they spent the week preparing when you see that level of 💩 product

But sadly, totally expected every bit of it

Until this team gets competent coaching and a franchise QB it will be the same as it ever was.

Without both of those ingredients all the past prime veteran duct tape on the planet can’t plug these holes.

I said it before the season and I’ll repeat
The Panthers are closer to the SB than the Steelers.

They proved that this week.

If they can turn it around in 2 years why does it take Mike 10 or more?

That and targeting Freiermuth only three times are difficult to justify.
If I was Pat I wound privately ask to be traded. If I was KC, I would be on that phone making a deal for him.
41 receptions on 54 targets this season . A competent QB with a competent coach would double that instantly. I think he could be that 90-110 receptions guy.

Roman Wilson. 12 receptions on 21 targets. In a year we desperately needed a WR to step up. Its crazy that he didn’t get more playing time.

Kaleb Johnson 28 rushes for 69 yards.

Jonnu Smith. 38 receptions on 54 targets. They never seemed to be on the same page all season. While I think most disagree with me,I think he was totally misused this season. He was never going to be a 1-3 yard then get yards after catch guy. It was a ******* joke. He should have been the quick hitting 10-15 yards after catch guy lining up everywhere. There’s no doubt they will release him.

In a season where once again our Offense was inept, inconsistent and needed a spark,I just don’t understand why we didn’t give these guys more opportunities.

I hated the hire of Arthur Smith when it happened and nothing this season has changed my mind. His whole resume was because he had a 2000 yard rusher with the Titans. Atlanta fans rejoiced when he got fired.
