Initial Thoughts - seahawks game

Spot on.

1-7 in their last 8 games. Last playoff win was the 2016 season. A string of consecutive playoff losses in that span to now where the team looked like they didn't belong there.

I've seen enough. I watch because I adore the team and it's history.... But there will be no sudden resurgence here.

Sudden resurgence? Not likely. Under Tomlin players aren't prepared. Game plan and scheme never changes. Opposition calls out the plays before the snap. It's been going on for years now.

Watt keeps seeing double teams

It is rarely even a true double team

Most of the time a solo blocker is assigned and once beaten there is a man to chip on the way to the QB. Sometimes he’s even chipped twice. So yes multiple people have been assigned with a partial role in stopping him.

Other teams have adjusted to neutralize the Steelers best defender. Where is the adjustment for our coaching staff to allow him to wreak havoc?

I did see them move him to the other side on one play vs the Seahawks and there was a good deal
of pressure that play. You could tell multiple offensive players were scrambling with last second assignment adjustments. There was confusion cuz numb nuts made the obvious adjustment…finally, only one damn time but they did it.

It begs the question when the results are shown as to why our staff can be so inept to allow other teams to simply neutralize our players because we are so predictable. It also is an indictment on all the other defensive players that is Watt gets 2-3 offensive players with a role in stopping him What the F are the guys doing???

This defense and coaching staff are a bad joke told by the village idiot over and over and over again. And other teams just crack up when they see the jester across the field…it’s gonna be an easy “get right” day vs this historic, special defense.

Where the hell is Watt?

This team is a missed 60-yard field goal away from being 0-2.

And now we will see the unmitigated brilliance of Mike Tomlin as he takes his team into New England to face a bad opponent. We all know what that means.

Finally, why the @#$% is this team going to spend a ton of capital to get a franchise QB when it is glaringly obvious to any sentient being that nothing changes as long as Captain No Losing Season is in charge.

Drake Maye licking his chops at the impending “get right” game vs the Pittsburgh Swisscheesers
Or is it the Pittsburgh Sieve? Whatever name the trash heap goes by it is certainly historic.

Though every season is not a direct continuation of the prior one due to all the change that occurs around the league, the 1-7 stretch going back to last season is hard to ignore.

It's especially so considering it looks like a lot of the same problems from last season and ones prior have continued.

The OL and offense have been a shitshow for years now, but what we're seeing since the middle of last season is the defense joining the party.

We're specifically seeing what happens when Watt and Heyward start showing signs of age and the defense becomes more dependent on the coaching of Tomlin and Austin, and it hasn't been pretty.

"Just lineup and beat the man across from you" is no longer sufficient when your two HOF-caliber defenders up front are no longer quite those guys.

I do think we blitzed more, but Ramsay had a rough game. 2 plays he was flat out beaten and at least 2 others he was trailing a WR which may or may not been his fault. He did have an int, but not sure that makes up for the bad plays. Stopping the run is a cluster. Guys are over running the play and other guys are just getting blown up at the line. Wilson is not an every down ILB. He is more of a hybrid / cover ILB. I just think we need more mass up front.

Watt keeps seeing double teams
Watch the Sawyer sack, 3 guys stepped to block Watt, allow Sawyer to go untouched. That's where we are until other guys that consistently get there and we consistently make teams pay for using 2 and 3 guys on Watt, those doubles and chips then doubles will not stop.
I'm just so glad we get to watch this "historic" defense that Tomlin bragged about in the preseason, the greatest coverage LB in the world, the best defense in the NFL, the defense that can cover anyone

I think this is why they try to keep patching the ship to sail Tomlin past Noll in career wins, then Tomlin bails and leaves the franchise is tatters.
Any way they get him out Im ok with. I love how they are like it's one game. Like **** its two games and everybody knows its not going to get fixed. Yes they will pull out sone more wins. Maybe even another 8 or 9. But they are not a good football team. Anyone can see that.

Totally. Run fits are build a unified wall. They dont even have one at the intended point of attack.. They need to get the Harmon kid innand replace either ILB on first down. You are probably right on Wilson but Id have to look at film cause Queen makes one or two good plays and then its sweet FA.

A show called "Umbrella Academy" - a sort of sci-fi/superhero/comedy blend - had an episode where their van had a tape stuck in the sound system playing "Baby Shark" and nothing they could do about it. It was a really dark episode but that sequence was laugh-out-loud funny.
I never saw that but I can relate. I woke up about 3am and that song was in my head.

And wtf were you doing Skowronek???

Coolie gets post of the day for those two simple and blatantly obvious points.
I guess part of my problem over the years is it's just hard for me to believe someone who has gotten to the level of NFL head coach could be this obtuse. To see what has happened over many years but especially at the end of last year and not change anything, except players? I am stunned at his lack of awareness. Maybe I'm obtuse for thinking someone that has reached the level he has couldn't be this obtuse. I just feel like if it was me, and I was lucky enough to keep my job after the last many years of failure topped by the disaster of last year, I'd realize I have to change. What an arrogant ***.

I'll give some credit, on the Sawyer Sack, Sawyer was lined up inside Watt, we haven't seen that alot before, both LB's lined up on the same side, and 3 guys slid to block Watt, allowing Sawyer a free run to the QB. The Best cover LB in the world's sack, we haven't seen a blitz up the middle alot in the past either, Watt doubled again, allowing us a free guy.
I was saying this last year if teams want to continually dedicate 2 and 3 people to Watt, we need to blitz the hell out of them and force them to stop.
KC blitzed Philly something like 68% of the time yesterday and their offense is way more scary than Seattle's. We're constantly content is playing it safe.

With Highsmith apparently going to miss a good amount of time once again, Watt and the others need to seriously step up. They really need Harmon in there and get Benton off NT. He's not a NT. Put him at DT with Harmon and or Black in the middle.

The O just seriously sucks, even the coaching. Smith should be gone or not renewed when his contract is up. Where are the quick slants? Rodgers does those so well.

I guess the problem is Ramsey and Slay getting beat like rented mules. They keep signing the wrong guys on top of everything else.

What's the earliest a mock draft has been started on SN?
Not including this year of course.

The only thing we have control over is ourselves and as far as I'm concerned, this current version of the team isn't worth getting upset about because, you know, we have no control.

My faith in GOD is un-moveable.

My hope in this team does have vulnerability due to the continual Groundhog Day vibrations.

Salute the nation

Them getting beat like a rented mule, doesn't help, but they weren't hear last year and all this still happened.
My point is we did something that actually worked, we got two free run to the QB, then we didn't go back to it, but maybe once, Queen shot through and made a nice tackle for loss. Why? because it's a bit of a gamble and Tomlin doesn't like it, he'd rather play it safe and conservative. Teams rarely doubled Harrison back in 07-10 because if they did, LeBeau would send a blitz from anywhere at anytime.

Like I wrote in the game balls and goats thread, Watt can't beat the man in front of him anymore. It's been that way for several games in a row. At least he's getting rich even if he's not getting to the quarterback.

I seem to be in the minority when it comes to the OL. Yes, they do need to play better, but 4 of the 5 starters have less than 20 games playing their positions. 2 are just starting their 1st year, 2 starting their 2nd. The OL is being addressed from a player perspective, but is coaching helping or hurting? While I don’t know enough to say it is hurting, it doesn’t look to be helping.

I would be ok with keeping Wilson on the field and using Holcomb in place of Queen. Queen seems like a tweener to me. Not quite fast enough to cover and not quite big enough to be a good run stuffer.

This team is poorly coached and poorly prepared.

Slow starts and the lack of in-game adjustments are the cornerstone of the Mike Tomlin era. It never changes. Ever.

Whatever he may have been at one time, he is not even that anymore. He's phoning it in. His teams are phoning it in.

I've been a die hard Steelers fan for more than 50 years and I AM SICK OF THIS ****.

Agree with most of all your comments here and will add this.
As we all know Terrell Austin is just Tomlin’s lackey and does anyone here actually think he’d be a DC for any of the other 31 teams!
Austin was historical! He historically got run out of Detroit with terrible defense. Then to top that off he gets fired in season by the cheap Mike Brown as DC in Cincy. That’s hard to do with that organization.
Then you have the great defensive mind Tomlin who had one year as a DC for the Vikings who were ranked near the bottom of the league.
What could possibly go wrong!
It should not surprise any of you that they don’t make adjustments that need to be made, and that their defensive schemes are outdated. Neither of these two are capable of fixing things on defense.
Wait until they start playing some good teams!
See what happened to the Jets yesterday when they played a good team? Same with Seattle last week in their home opener when they couldn’t do anything against the Niners defense coached by Robert Saleigh the Jets old HC.
This organization is broken and needs to be rebuilt from Tomlin on down.
It’s not going to get any better this season since nothing will change.

I can't imagine why Tomlin didn't challenge the special teams TD - the ball appeared to be at the back edge of the EZ and the player who got to it looks like he could have slid out of bounds before he had full possession, in which case it would have been a touchback. I thought all scoring plays were reviewed.
