Interviews for Steelers new head coach thread

They just got their ***** handed to them by a team whose head coach is from the defensive side. Not saying that it matters, but offensive minds vs defensive minds; the trends change in the NFL all the time as to which one is more desirable.

True but how far have the Texans gone in the post season?

They gave us every opportunity to win that game, their offense was turning the ball over in waves and was almost as bad as ours for 3 quarters

Seems to be working alright out in Seattle. I mean we have people here trying to steal his OC for our HC vacancy. We still have the highest paid D in the league, why not hire someone who can get them back to that elite level? As long as he can bring in someone to run the offense in a modern style, like Kubiak is in Seattle, it works just fine.

This perfectly highlights why I want to find an offensive-minded head coach. Seattle has a very good defensive guy who may lose a quality OC. He'll have to find a replacement and it's not like he's going to mentor the new coach like Shanahan or McVay. If either of those guys lose one, they can fall back on their own expertise to keep the offense machine going.

I’d gladly take chances trying to find a good DC if I have a HC who can elevate an offensive system and get the best out of our future QB.

My uneducated guess is Shula is very high on the list. They're bringing in Scheelhaase in hopes that Shula will bring him along as OC and they want to get a feel for him.

Good points here, listening to this and to Rooney say today his number one quality he wants in a coach is “leadership”-it makes me hope Rooney is smart enough to view leadership as more than being the rah rah guy who has the silver tongue during the interview-but the ability to delegate and bring people in who will push the envelope, develop players, and have balance on both sides of the ball

As has been said you don’t want the Bengals situation where all the money is spent on the shiny offensive toys and the defense can’t stop a runny nose

Obviously we’ve all seen the Defensive guy in Tomlin who puckers up on offense like it’s 1975 and tries to win 15-12 and how that goes.

The most important questions that should be asked is about delegation, balance on the other side of the ball from his expertise, and staff management

I feel like Shula is this rounds Russ Grimm.. just seems like he’s the favorite and obvious. Rooney’s like to blindside and surprise, I’m going to go with Nate Scheelhause as the hire and I honestly think I’d like it. McVay calls him an offensive genius and that’s some high praise. Steelers have been changing their ways in some ways in recent years, it’s time to go offensive HC.

Defense still wins championships. It always will. You sure do need an offense,but I've never seen a Steelers team win a superbowl with a soft defense.

A complete team will be good/great at both.

I'm a hard no on Flores as head coach but would take him as DC in a heart beat. Just my opinion I know he probably got a raw deal in Miami but I think he may be a head case and we need a coach that can get us back to the days when we had integrity. plus we don't need another non losing season coach and that's how I see him.

I want to see someone like Cowher, a coach that can get the best out of his players but smart enough to surround himself with great assistance

Looks like more of Rooney being in love with tradition first and being closed minded against offensive coaches.

However I’d settle for a defensive coach that’s open to hiring the best and brightest on to his staff (and embracing a modern offense) and embracing innovation

Hey maybe they if they hire a passsing coordinator in Scheelhasse for head coach it will mean the Steelers will actually get one of those too

I would prefer Flores NFL situation to be resolved before I hire him. He is on the table for a potential hire one of the initial 5 interviews. I would have to see who else they bring to lock him in where I rank him, he might be my 3rd or 4th option as it sits now.

I’m not in favor of a retread as head coach, Flores should have shown more signs of life as head coach in Miami if he has what it takes to be a head coach despite the terrible ownership

I would take Flores as DC in a heartbeat.

That would be the only thing giving me pause, I would like to have seen a better outcome as a head coach. Up to the Steeler to decipher how much of that came from the owner, circumstances etc. negatively factoring it. But yeah it has to be on the table.

Both those guys bring baggage and unsatisfactory history compared to other candidates. They may be excellent and qualified, but I think the Steelers would need to find them far above all others for consideration.

Frankly, the Deuce doesn't seem that interested in Steeler issues; can't imagine him wanting to bring outstanding lawsuits and Miami years ago issues into his building.
