is new-earth creationist ken ham and his work (creation museum and new ark encounter) good for christianity on the whole or is he putting people in conflict with (scientific) reason and faith? while the state of kentucky has bent rules to facilitate his new ark encounter, it has pretty well faltered in terms of expected turnout. his staged debate with scientist bill nye achieved it's goal of mustering the seed money needed for his new ark encounter but he must now establish a steady revenue stream or it's gonna fall on it's face. if it turns into a catastrophic business failure, will that impact the literal interpretation in the american christian zeitgeist? what do zip-lines have to do with these old testament stories? he will have them at both facilities. why not have something more connected to the storyline like a live-cam feed of the cherubim and flaming sword guarding the east gate of the garden of eden?

i think he's doing more harm than good, and wants to make a profit at it.

People that believe are going to believe. People that are Atheists will disbelieve. Nothing this guy does will change that. Personally I believe in God and I am a Christian. I don't put much faith in dogma, churches and preachers.

to you, is the flood story a metaphor or history lesson?

I think it's. Metaphor.

I think it is both to a degree. Christianity is not the only religion or source for stories about a great flood.
I Don't believe the whole Earth was covered by water but at some point a catastrophic flood occurred early in our early history as humans and that became a story that grew to "biblical" proportions and became a teachable story. It was probably caused by climate change.

On the original question I think anyone like Ken Hamm that does not have an open enough mind to accept that science explains the wonder of God's creation rather than destroying it is bad for religion. To me Genesis is parable. I take let there be light as the Big Bang. We are too hung up on Dogma rather than the philosophy of Jesus. I do not look at him as a socialist as others claim but a true example for Conservatives. He did not give money to others to fix problems he said to go and do it yourself and led by example. He never expected others to do what he was not willing to do himself.

Never heard of him.

he's the president of the creationist apologetics movement "answers in genesis" that built the creation museum and recently the ark encounter in kentucky. a couple of years ago he staged an evolution/creation "debate" with bill nye. his purpose for the debate was to raise funds for his ark exhibit which is currently under scrutiny for a host of reasons, largely the lack of attendance.

personally, i think he IS the missing link he argues is missing in evolution.

don't forget that the crux of the literal flood story was a reversal of creation due to man's evil. and AFTER the flood, god made it that much more difficult to survive by creating the seasons. before, it was apparently summer all of the time. man now had only one growing season to last him the year. so from a literal perspective it is almost exactly like the banishment from the garden of eden.

one reason why the flood story is so common is because most religions we're familiar with share elements from the mesopotamian mythology which arguably was one of man's first recorded societies.

I only know who this guy is from my atheist friends.

This serves as proof that the people who wrote the bible didn't have the knowledge (science) of what creates seasons and hadn't traveled to areas that are much closer to the equator.
