There CAN be some overlap between 5-1 and 3-8... 8-9 overall... according to Pro Football Reference... remember, if a team wins a playoff game, they get to play another... Barry Foster, Bam Morris, Bettis, Staley, Parker….all from the Cowher offense recipe. Run the ball, control the clock, play great defense. He didn’t want to rely upon a QB to win the game, only manage it. Every team he fielded followed that strategy until the one year TommyGun offense, which failed. Ben came into the picture (without choice and a limited playbook) after Maddox and Batch both got hurt. But Ben’s first year was also based upon run first game plans. Ben just extended drives with his backyard play escapism.

The next year, they tried to throw it all the ******* time and it was a disaster.

I just don't know that the narrative of Cowher being entirely rigid and inflexible when it came to offensive football is really that accurate.

Punx, during the coaching period from 92 - 2003 (2003 when the TommyGun experiment was used), Cowher’s Rushing Offenses were ranked no less than 5th in attempts every year except twice (8th in 1998 and 16th in 2003). While they ranked 9th in Pass attempts in 1995 (SB XXX) they were also ranked 24th in INTs thrown. The three previous years they were ranked no lower than 6th.

During the Tomczak/Graham/Kordell years they were ranked no higher than 16th in PAs, UNTIL 2003, in which they were ranked 9th. They were also ranked 14th in PY and 16th in PTDs. Their rushing offense that year was 16th in attempts and 31st in Total Yds.

Chin’s SB XL year, they were 1st in rushing attempts and 32nd (LAST) in passing attempts. So, to open things up on offense was rare or on a short leash. 80% of his coaching years were Ball Control by rushing attempts, winning TOP and playing great defense. His strengths were what he chose to build his team around those facets. He never wanted or needed a franchise QB. His game philosophy did not place a priority for one.
