I don’t know what if the announcers were accurate with Titans coverage on Claypool was accurate—it’s something Belichick would do.

I can’t believe that in a game with these stakes Tomlin would design a strategy that deliberately takes ball out of hands of most dangerous offensive threat.

However—since the former is more likely; Harbaugh was already planning on focusing on Claypool.

Guaranteed seeing it on film will help design a strategy to negate that

Butler was on Claypool all game it seemed. Claypool has been fantastic so far this season, but he has a lot to learn when it comes to working guys like Butler.

I am sure a good bit of it was pre-snap reads. Ben has proven time and time again this year his mastery of reading a defense and taking what the defense is giving. I don't have tape to look at this year, but I suspect they showed a lot of over the top help for Claypool. That leaves someone else open. And, it wasn't just JuJu and DJ. Ebron seems to have earned Ben's trust, Vance had a couple and so did Conner.

And for the record, the defense gets paid too. I mean you can say Ben didn't target Claypool, but maybe the Titans took him out of the game.

This is what I was thinking. That's fine, take him out of the game because the Steelers have 3 quality receiving options and two solid tight ends they can go to in the passing game.

Was awesome to see the ball spread around without anyone (84) sulking. A wins a win. NEXT!!!

A couple years ago, folks were complaining about Ben trying to force the ball to AB. Now, he’s spreading it around, and now folks are complaining that he’s not forcing it in to Claypool. Steeler fans can be so fickle.

So the complaint here is that the Steelers are throwing to the guy with the best matchup instead of forcing it to a particular guy?

that seems to be the point from the original post.

others realize that you gotta go to who is open or at least has the easiest matchup to defeat. the titans gameplanned to take away Claypool. So others burned them. That is the way it should be

It's a Coach thread, there's always going to be some misplaced bitching.

He has rare agility and quickness, and he knows how to use it to avoid press coverage.

He's extraordinarily gifted as a pass catcher and route runner, but he is not yet reliable in either area, and may never be.

There’s a Titan still looking for his own ankles on about the five yard line on that 2nd #18 TD.

My only negative us that Ben DID force it several times. And 2 of them were picks.

This^^ and some longer shots when a short play would have moved the chains-which may be exactly what wig is saying

Yep. Or an opportunity to put at least 3 on the board.

All Pro ceiling?

Given Johnson lack of durabiity, it would not surprise me if he was limited our out for the next game. The guy has thin build and pin legs, a what they heck type of football IQ, and unreliable hands. Yes he has talent. Lots of players do. You give Claypool 15 targets he's getting a lot more than 80 yards.

The Steelers offense seems unable to call play action or execute a screen pass well. Why is a good question.

Because their running game is soft. Even when they are getting yards running the ball the defense never loads up to stop the run because they rarely line up and play power football, imo. I don't like the Steeler running offense, too much trickery at times adn not enough fullback lead blocking, of course, I'm old school.

Who gives a **** who gets more targets on any given week? The Steelers are putting points on the board. In fact, this is the first year in their history they've scored at least 25 in their first 6 games. Last year, they scored more than 20 only once in their final 8 contests.

Ben's keeping everyone involved at some point or another...why complain?

This was a tough game for Claypool. He's a rookie, and the Steelers went spread, quick pass attack. It is not Claypool's strength. He needs to work on his short routes. He's better in space and on deeper routes. Same with Washington.

DJ eats these routes up, so does JuJu. They were targeted because they were open.

Time to start giving DJ some credit instead of worrying about why Claypool couldn't get open short?

Bingo. And re: the bolded, may be a tall order for some but let's hold out hope.

i still have no idea how people don't see that DJ is really good. People act like he drops every other pass and never makes big plays. I also don't understand how people don't see that DJ brings an element to this offense that no other WR can bring with his ability to get open quickly on the short throws and to make people miss in open field.

Not sure why we have to ***** about one guy to prop another up, they all have their areas they excel and make us a much more versatile offense, thats all I care about. Claypool is a rookie, people are petty naive if they thought he was going have huge game after huge game every week

Clearly 9 receptions, 80 yards, 2 touchdowns, and some fantastic footwork is not enough for some people.

DJ is very good. Still young and not quite in tune with Ben at times. He is dangerous once he gets the ball. With him, JuJu, Claypool and Washington the Steelers have a good mix of talents at WR and Ebron and McDonald they have some good pass catching TEs also...

as a very intelligent poster has said before...teams can take away one or two of these guys but it is going to be extremely hard to quiet all of them.

People gave up on Emanel Sanders too. He had a similar start to his career. Showed promised but was slowed by injuries. I remember when the Pats tried to sign him away as a reserve free agent and the steelers matched the offer to keep him and half this board went nuts saying that Sanders sucked and the steelers were crazy to keep him. Then the next year he left for Denver as a free agent and emerged as a pro bowl caliber player.

There have been a record number of injuries this year. Guys just aren't in shape yet.

When the Steelers have DJ, JuJu, and Claypool on the field, there are nearly indefensible. They all need double coverage. You better have a versatile secondary to compete. If you have all big CBs then DJ is too quck. If you have smaller, faster DBs, the Claypool and JuJu can win with physicality. It's a perfect mix.

My only issue with Johnson is that he is targeted a huge number of times while he has the lowest catch % on the team.
